Title: Can other cryptocurrency ovetake bitcoin inthe future?
Post by: Rooster101 on November 17, 2016, 09:25:36 PM
With many new cryptocurrencies sprouting in the net, is it possible that bitcoin can be overtaken as a top digital currency in the future? Is ethereum  or other well known cryptocurrencies can be a threat to bitcoin dominance?

This topic already exists here.
But since you've asked I say everything is possible. Maybe in the future some new even more developed and perfect cryptocurrency will be invented. Technology is moving forward constantly.
But I don't think that Ethereum will take the Bitcoins place, it's not very likely.

Maybe yes or maybe no,crypto currency is evolving, another inovation in crypto currency may come tomorrow,we will not know Bitcoin is now popular and the price is still rising but it's still possible that another crypto currency could come and give Bitcoin a competition.

Bitcoin is crap, Transactions overload problems, code can't be updated by Dev Team because the Chinese Mining Pools won't let them.
Price is being artificially inflated by it Centralized Miners.
(Does anyone believe that crap is really worth $700, sucker born ever minute) :P
Wastes loads of electricity that will raise everyone electric bills.

The question is not When will another Crypto take over,
The question should be How has BTC hung on to the top spot this long?
(Sad reason, is most people don't really understand the technical issues, they will learn and it is going to cost them)

Not tomorrow but the "Bitcoin killer" is coming...

Quote from: @AnonyMint's whitepaper
The technical innovation of this paper combines the unbounded participation of [redacted] with the bounded election of [redacted]; and which entirely ameliorates the power-law distribution’s otherwise deleterious ability to dictate transaction fees (or analogously the distribution of minted dilution as a substitute for transaction fees), double-spend, and/or censor transactions.

Note I should add that even a 100% attack can't double-spend nor censor transactions. This will sound loony to those who are knowledgeable, but it is only because they don't yet understand the paradigm-shift.

Its very hard to say, perhaps ethereum can take over bitcoin in future. Nobody is 100 percent sure. It may or may not happen. We will have to wait and see. I am expecting bitcoin to keep going forward and be the market leader in future too.

I think NEM will be the number one cryptocurrency.  NEM is the first coin intended to be egalitarian and it had a fair distribution to 1000s.

Nothing in the digital world lasts forever so there is a chance bitcoin will be replaced sometime. But for the next years I dont see an alternative.

As BTC was the first one, it now has a good user base now, it would be hard to beat them at their game. Unless something very drastic happens, like some governments meet up and initiate their own approved digital currency which is accepted by most of the business world.

Depends what you mean with "future". Near future or the future in 100 years? In the next 10 years, I do not believe that Bitcoin will face a serious competitor. Ethereum for instance, was hyped very much by media and it is probably the technology which could get along with Bitcoin, but Bitcoin is still 13-14 times more worth. This shows how big the gap between Bitcoin and all other altcoins is.

Everything is possible,Bitcoin is the first but everyday we see new crypto currency coming up with superior features and ease of use and everyone can adopt .
We must become open minded that everything needs an update and something is missing in Bitcoin..

No that's not going to be happen, Though many of the altcoins rises in the crypto currencies that build big community in crypto world but it doesn't mean they replace bitcoin their price value might increase but still bitcoin will prevail in the price.

first of all, a threat to bitcoin?! what does that even mean. do you think when bitcoin was created it was a threat to fiat? of course not, they exist side by side and work independently.

and i believe the same thing is also possible with altcoins, if they are good enough they can become as big as bitcoin and even bigger if they really have something to offer.

but are the current existing altcoins capable of that is the biggest question. and in my opinion the answer is not specially about ethereum with the recent huge dump.

i don't know if the other cryptocurrency will be overtake bitcoin in future because i can not make a prediction for this, i only know that bitcoin is like the king and the altcoin is like the queen. but i think it can be possible as the future is not yet happen and we don't know about it. for now, i only say that bitcoin can not be overtaken by other cryptocurrency.

I hope it is not possible because bitcoin price is keep changing from time to time, even in some countries many people have started their block chain installed and many small store people are accepting bitcoin, now bitcoin is most wanting commodity like gold. To defeat bitcoin it may take lot of time, but we have to wait and see.

Altcoin exist because of bitcoin so it's very low chance for altcoin to replace bitcoin existense.
As we know altcoin market are volatile rather than you trade with bitcoin so most people still interest on bitcoin

For right now bitcoin is number one there are no other coins that can be beat bitcoin especially volume of transaction and price of the coins, we can check on here https://coinmarketcap.com. but there are no people who know what will happen in the future and everything can be happening include there are altcoins that can replace bitcoin.

The reason that most of the altcoins just copy an existing code base and tweak a few parameters thus really not a challenge to the established leader(s), i.e. Bitcoin:

It is really, really hard folks. One little detail wrong and poof ... your money is gone...

Unless something screwed up in the foundation and implementation of scaling.

Ethereum is essentially a Zombie.  Ever since the DAO, and like MtGox for Bitcoin, will ever hit $15 again?!   ???

If something overtakes Bitcoin then it has to be scandal free.  Monero might do it if they can put Rpietila under house arrest..

Yup.

Any alternative needs to be
a) scandal free
b) quick to confirm (under a minute)
c) able to handle a large volume of transactions in 24 hours
d) not require people to download mega amounts of data that fills up their hard drive, just to run a wallet.

There's arguably already a bunch of projects which have those characteristics and no one is hopping on them yet.  In order for those characteristics to matter, the alternate first has to hit $5+ billion and this means playing the speculation game which only a handful of projects (Ripple and Ethereum) had ever seen any modicum of success at.

Yes, other cryptocurrency can overtake bitcoin in the future. Even though bitcoin is one of the first crypto-currency that ever released then it doesn't mean that bitcoin will be the king forever. Having people choice is always depend on the coin's features and stability. If one of the crypto-currency will have a lot of better features than bitcoin and also stable then it will be a threat for bitcoin because that coin in the future can beat and easily replaced bitcoin.

I think it can be happen in the future because the circulation of bitcoin and numbers of bitcoin will gradually hard to get more supply or someday we will mine fewer rewards from blocks but it takes a long time before it happen so for me it is better to stay in bitcoin and use it while bitcoin has a good value and more stores right now are accepting bitcoin and more adoption will come so bitcoin will live long.. enjoy bitcoin while it is alive maybe year 2055 we will see that bitcoin will gradually die and some crypto will change position of bitcoin..

You cant really set a time on which bitcoin would die because you cant able to predict future but for now bitcoin is the leading and  father of all cryptos and the adoption is really rising and being  accepted gradually on any country which mean it has the potential to grow even more.Replacing it by another altcoin might be possible  but  it would really be hard for the other  altcoin devs to surpass bitcoin.

you know that your "b" and "d" are against each other.
when you are talking about a faster confirmation it means more blocks created. for example compared with bitcoin it means more than 1 block per 10 minutes on average. and there are altcoins that have this feature like 1 block every 30 seconds.
now imagine these altcoins handle the same number of transactions as bitcoin!
full blocks every 30 seconds means blockchain will size will increase 20 MB per 10 minutes and ~2.8 GB each day.

the main problem with all the altcoins that users are so happily advertise around here is that they have been created to be pump and dumped in other words their main purpose was to make more money from trading them. they rarely pay any attention to development and important things like real world usage that is why you never see anyone using them as currency in the real world.

of course to all i said there is always exceptions but even they are not that good or useful that can be used widely as bitcoin.

Unless you are using an online wallet, as in Steem. No need to download anything, and extremely quick confirmation. And they did some work to allow people to retrieve their accounts in case a hack took place. They can also handle lots of transactions.

The downside is that the developers own too much of the coin (not premined exactly, but they were mining after a small announcement and most miners missed it, and only came on board when the online interface was added).

This thing have been doing on most  traders on which they trade alts but in the end they still exchange it to bitcoin because  btc has more value compare to those alts and also they are somehow dependent to bitcoin.I really believe even how those altcoins such have unique feature its still impossible to replace bitcoin to its place because its the father of all crypto but no one knows really if some coins is much more better to bitcoin on the near future.

This is something I just spoke about not too long ago. I dont see that happen even if it will, its not happening anytime soon because all we see in Alts are just the initial hype and nothing more and even the developed being true to themselves knew they dont have the objective in mind just to create something to trade with and it goes off like that. Maybe one will break the jinx in the near future.

The only way that alts could take down bitcoins is by connecting some source of power or reallife goods to those altcoins. I see the future as some corpocoins taking such roles. It might not be the same kind of corporations that we know today but yeah. Thats how I see it.

Like I said before somewhere in this forum that the possibility of any other cryptocurrency overtaking bitcoin can't be denied. People having identified the flaws and disadvantages bitcoin has may come up with other cryptocurrency which are foolproof and technologically more advanced and acceptable and at the same time don't have flaws which other cryptocurrencies have till today.

There are already some alternatives it seems.
For example, with the one i'm currently developing, transactions will be confirmed and published within seconds (doesn't have to wait for our "block-equivalent"). It uses different mechanisms for validating transactions (no PoS/PoW) so the validation work is more balanced and less redundant, increasing the overall transaction throughput of the network.
Also, the nodes are made to be abstracted from the general users so they don't actually need participate with the network (unless they want to) or store/synchronize all that extra unnecessary information.

It's called Unified Digital Currency (UDC) and the whitepaper is already available.

That thing is not gonna happen even in the future. They cant even come close to btc. And we know most of altcoin is just a shitcoin. Maybe some are trusting on those popular alts but not like the trust they are giving to btc.

well bitcoin did take a couple of years before catching on. Trust takes a bit of time, specially when most aren't useful or have problems like you say

No! I beg to disagreed into it. Because bitcoin nowadays will not be gone forever especially the price value of it is continue increasing by now and everyday the investors increasing too together with the user also.

Bitcoin is safe for the next 5 years at least as number 1. The real alternative mainstream currency race will be between litecoin and Gulden. This is where the action will be especially if your investing in Gulden for long term.

Gulden for Europe and Litecoin for China as it stands.

I don't include anon or assets in the mix.

I think that even if some altcoin will get bigger adoption than BTC in rl, BTC will still remain the main currency fot trading...

Bitcoin will remain the currency f the internet no matter what. The government may come up with their own centralized attempts to make a cryptocurrency mainstream while remaining in total control of it all, but the internet is the wild wild west and people don't like to be controlled, therefore bitcoin will remain the decentralized freedom gateway for life.

yeah but most people also don't like to wait, incur excessive risk or extra work for the same result. There's still some constraints before it can branch out into mass adoption, which need to be addressed before main countries start rolling out their digital currency. Otherwise people will just go for the simplest/"safest"/known solution, since it'll operate (almost) exactly as fiat currencies do now electronically.
Also USD is the currency of the internet, followed by most other fiat currencies. Bitcoin exchange volume is still very low in comparison (although the current volume is already an achievement)

THE bitcoin is like gold in the times of the Middle Ages. Today you do not see more people shopping in gold but in FIAT currency. So we'll see in a few years the bitcoin will be held in a safe a altcoins will be used for shopping.
Which Altcoin? i don't know maybe the next one

That will be left in the hands of the developers to get their priorities straight whether that is their objective or just to create "something" which will not stand the test of time only for them to finish the ICO then make some bucks and bolt no support nor campaign nothing. How will that even stand close to Bitcoin not to talk of overtaking?

If we are talking about now, My answer is no! there are no other currency at the present time now that can overtake bitcoin, it will be a miles away before that happen it will years or decades I think. Like most member in this forum said majority of the altcoins are like zombies.

In my opinion it is not possible for any old or new cryptocurrency to make Bitcoin useless or overtake the Bitcoin Because the main reason behind this is that every new currency depends upon the Bitcoin rate and its price also so not easy for anyone to overtake Bitcoin .

If you may, you can argue with this,

Code:
There is no permanent in this world but change.

No matter how strong the position of one thing, it is always susceptible to change.  For now, yes Bitcoin is very strong and maybe it will have another decade to stay in the top position, but as time pass and technology move forward, there will be one new created crypto currency that will overtake bitcoin.  So better take advantage of it while it is trending.

Well, its money, who does not like it?  But not all developer are doing nothing with their project.  It is that  they are just overshadowed by the achievement of bitcoin in terms of adoption.  But just you wait, there will be one altcoin that will contest it or even overtake its position, there are several candidate at this point.  And will have more in the future.

Of course, in as much as altcoins are meant to profit from the initial seigniorage, that's understandable, but given that one of the main difficulties of a cryptocurrency is the fairness of its initial distribution, and that bitcoin has, because of its origins, one of the better initial distributions, it would seem to me that when creating a new altcoin, instead of starting a new block chain with all the hassle of trying, again, to obtain a fair "initial distribution", using bitcoin's distribution at a certain point (the forking block, eventually in the past) solves this issue way way better than "doing it over again".

If that's the case, altcoins are just "alternative bitcoins" and one cannot really say that they "overtake" it.  They would simply be forks of the same original chain.

The fork could be entirely radical, with different emission schemes, different mining, different rules: the only thing that is taken over from bitcoin is the initial distribution at the moment of forking.  One could even eliminate Satoshi's stash if that's considered a potential problem.

Nobody has done this as far as I know, and I don't know why (except for the obvious reason that this doesn't allow for an initial scammy premine or ninjamine).  the boundaries between "bitcoin" and "altcoins" would be much more blurred then.  All bitcoin holders (in the past) would then automatically become new coin holders too, which would create an initial community much larger than what one could hope with a new chain.   For the fairness and the quality of the new coin, I cannot think of a better way to start it than fork it off bitcoin, but I never saw this happening.

Many merchants accept bitcoin payment, and bitcoin exchanger is exist in every country.
it must take long times and must have the trust from the people if want to be overtake bitcoin.

it is possible to overtake bitcoin but it will be quite difficult, if the growth of bitcoin transaction and the user still big then it will be near to impossible for other crypto currencies to rule down bitcoin, unless bitcoin suddenly got issue, then any crpto currency can replace bitcoin, but up until now i don't see any dominance of alt coins that have a chance to replace bitcoin

re: Jim Rickards: How to make a fortune before 2018

At 6:30 minute he predicted gold would rise $100 if Trump won.

Well I also predicted Trump would win and even wrote a detailed blog on why.

And I also wrote extensively about that gold had peaked at $1362 and would crash after the coming Trump victory, and head towards $1050 and probably a low of $850.

It is all in the Martin Armstrong thread.

Rickards is correct about the coming monetary reset, but he is wrong about gold in the near-term. Again everything  you need to know is in the Martin Armstrong thread.

Continue to ignore me at your peril. And that includes the Bitcoin killer altcoin I will soon be launching.

(Note I also predicted the recent rise of Bitcoin from mid $600s to high $700s. I also predicted the rise of silver from $20s to $48 and fall back to $20s back in 2010 many months before it happened. That was published on marketoracle.co.uk. I also predicted the fall of Bitcoin from the $700s to $300 and then the $150 low.)

I am totally sure that any altcoin can grow enough to "beat" Bitcoin. There are for sure a lot of conditions to be met for that, some of them are :

- Merchant integration.
- Service integration.
- Large community.
- Decentralisation.
- Transparency.
- Open organisation.

As of what i saw on the forum, these are some of the most important options an Altcoin must realise in order to succeed.
Merchants and services integration have nothing to do with exchanges, i personally advise altcoins to avoid these places especially in early stages, and focus more on the merchant/service integration, community development, as these are the most important growing engines for an Alt.
There are some coins here who followed these rules and they are doing fine now. By the way, the price of a coin isn't a growth indicator at all, but the volume growth is an indicator, as it shows how much the coin is used each day.

thought people usually refer to altcoins as any other cryptocurrency and not exclusively those forked on bitcoin, some have independent code bases and only follow certain concepts behind bitcoin like the blockchain.
bitcoin was just the first, and if it didn't exist, some other would've been created since there's been plenty of digital currency in the past

I was thinking the same thing, but then I came to a conclusion that we'll never see any real competition to the bitcoin and it will be the only real player in the world when it comes to cryptocurrency.
Now many may say that such coins like dash or ETH  or even zcash might replace it but lets be honest there is no true alternative to bitcoin.

At the start of this year you could only trade btc and litecoin against fiat, and even with those it was only on exchanges like btc-e.

Since then coinbase, kraken and others have added other alts, and the possibility now exists that if an alt performs better than bitcoin, people will switch to it. It's no longer a bitcoin-only space with alts relegated to alt exchanges. All the players are now configured to be able to switch to any alt that looks like taking bitcoin's crown. That is a major development.

That is true as in the earlier days you could only trade with litecoin and the fiat and now we have quite a number of coins we can deal with and we need a good number of alternatives for the trading market to thrive but have to shut all the fake out out and i figure only yobit has all the fake coins out their and they have to restrict that .

Bitcoin might not be the backed by the best tech or the brightest solutions we can think of at this moment.

In fact I expect that more sophisticated and 'more efficient' coins will appear in the future but that fact doesn't matter for BTC.

What matters is perfect bitcoin distribution - I am not necessarily talking here about 'lucky' early adopters or stash of Satoshi.

The reality that bitcoin was totally worthless matters here - every new altcoin is supposed to be worth something the more expensive the better.

I am not worried that altcoins will beat BTC because their distribution will never be ideal as the distribution of something that initially had completely no value.

But it seems like stratis was being the future of altcoin, They haven't got decreased in its value. And  there is not the another coin has had the same result.
I'm not a stratis fan but just looking their history.

What always surprises me is that new altcoins start new block chains, instead of forking off bitcoin.

I am not that into the project but heard something like it.
Do check it out if you are interested to know more.

That is right. If the AMD or nVidia want to support the ZCash mining, they can buy a few ZCAsh and raise the price.

With many new cryptocurrencies sprouting in the net, is it possible that bitcoin can be overtaken as a top digital currency in the future? Is ethereum  or other well known cryptocurrencies can be a threat to bitcoin dominance?
No one can overtake bitcoin, bitcoin will be always the father of all altcoin and they going to treat bitcoin well because if bitcoin died then maybe this altcoin will be dying too. Let say that there's an altcoin that more expensive than bitcoin but it don't have exchange website.

I think if some altcoin comes up with a good way of onboarding mainstream users, then it might have a good shot of overtaking bitcoin. Maybe one of the combination social media cryptocurrency appcoins.

Heeemmm the possibilities were always there, but I believe if there are some parties was threatening bitcoin and seem like was preparing about the other crypto has enough power being competitors for bitcoin. I just look about the active dev for developing his own coin.

Are you making a joke , dude?

I will say it is possible, it's  depend on the user and how the coin developer convince the user and investor, the more user used the coin the more valuable the coin will be, for now nothing can beat bitcoin because the user is a lot compare to other alt coin

Nope, it never happen other altcoin replace bitcoin. Because the price for each bitcoin is very high and the most expensive one than other cryptocurrencies. In my opinion price is really matter on cryptocurrencies and all cryptocurrencies always using bitcoin rates.

I like this thread, i see a lot of funny people who don't even understand the meaning of a cryptocurrency.
the bitcoin is not the kinf of Cryptocoins, he is just the first one, because of him, and of the people who trusted in him, he got to a point where his value is much appreciated by a lot of people, who use it, here is the main difference between cryptocurrencies.
the question in this thread is anti-crypto, because the most important role of a crypto is not to help some kids to get their 10 bucks a week, no, the major aim of a crypto is to bear a project, bring new technologies, or new ways to use technologies. this is why people invest in ICOs, not to run Pump/Dump projects, you should really revise what you know about the crypto history, owning a currency means owning freedom, as cryptos are decentralised, every one holding a crypto holds also a share of freedom.
This is the main role and attribute of a crypto.
Now regarding this Zcash, i don't even want to know where it comes from, i am here since some years and i never heard about him unless some weeks ago. Beware.
