nothing can compete with bitcoin. not as a currency to be used for payment or money transfer and not in terms of investment. because all of the altcoins are so much riskier than bitcoin investment. with bitcoin you know there is always some use for it and you can always use it to pay for stuff online but altcoins are only kept in your wallet for a short time before you dump them.

and because of pump and dumps that are happening you can never predict altcoin movements.

also in the end i have to warn you to be careful what coins are suggested here because most of them are not going to be good.

I think much better to check this site https://coinmarketcap.com . Look for the top 10 or top 20 coins there. Look the graph for their performance, coins in circulation and above all the market capitalization. I think this would give you an idea.

Have you read about coinmarketcap or coingecko, this is where you should start if you want to invest on other coin beside bitcoin you can see the 24 hour volume and the total supply and all you want and need to know wbout a particular coin.

volume is the one too many people forget. it comes and goes of course but that's the best sign of life.

as for the original question, all you'll get from the people on here is a list of their pet junk. don't listen to anyone. go learn on your own and decide for yourself. even then it's almost impossible to figure out what's honest and what isn't.

you can invest in two good project now, etheruem which is still strong and zcash which is true anonymous not like monero, there is also lbry that still seems promising despite the recent dump, but everyhting is dumped now so the top 5 are all a good bet for me

Ethereum
Monero
Zcash

could be your option to invest in because they have daily high trading volume and also come under top 10 alts by marketcap except zcash. However i don't think any of them could get same value as bitcoin or will be valued like 1BTC per coin in future. But they are good to play in short term trading for quick profit.

I agree with this honestly i choose almost the top 20 in coinmarket cap some of them not giving me profit but i am still holding it and wait for the right time to sell it.. This coin makes me profit before are eth and monero and i think after this few month or weeks ethereum will rise again because the price is gradually decrease they will transfer back again to ethereum..

i think its because the price of bitcoin itself is not yet in stable price for now and its need to be stable first before the altcoins can gets up again like before. but for now, i think the altcoins is up but for little price, and we should waiting for a while to see bitcoin price is going down, or going up or even its stable for now.

Stay away from zcash. It is over priced and it is not the best time to buy or that good time to buy might never come. Read this blog https://petertodd.org/2016/cypherpunk-desert-bus-zcash-trusted-setup-ceremony

Peter Todd, one of the known and trusted people in the Bitcoin development community has this to say

"The cryptography behind Zcash is both highly experimental, and relatively weak. Fact is, if zk-SNARKS turned out to be totally broken, unlike more mainstream crypto, it just wouldn’t be all that surprising."

"The current Zcash protocol inherits the same O(n^2) scalability problem that Bitcoin has, and then makes the problem significantly worse. First of all, unlike Bitcoin, Zcash can’t be pruned: every private Zcash transaction results in one or more revealed nonces that must be stored indefinitely by all Zcash nodes."

"Along with the other bugs that had to be fixed right after the 1.0.0 launch, I think we have strong reasons to wonder if the current software quality is at the level needed in a crypto-currency."

So it is now clear that zcash is all hype and the 20% of all mining rewards going to the founders and investors for the next 4 years looks like a new kind of premine. That does not help their justify cause. They are a for profit organization, something that does not fit well in a project that aims to distribute a currency.

Ethereum is not looking good these days also. In your list, only XMR is the worthy altcoin to hold after bitcoin,

Best alternative to bitcoin is etherium, doge, zcash and factom. For etherium I got profit more than 200% after I hold about 1 year ago. I recommend to save and separate our money to altcoin also.

As of now, I can't see any altcoin that is very competitive for bitcoin. Most of the altcoins don't have big community or supporters to support the coin for long term and based on my observations, Those altcoins are just for trading and not for long term like bitcoin. Now a days, it is very hard for us to find a coin that is for long term like bitcoin, IMO.

I also feel that there is no better alternative than the bitcoin. Well, I only frequent use and exploit altcoin that I use to add bitcoin I have. may it always happens when I'm playing trading. altcoin I always buy and sell at a high price so it makes me produce more bitcoin

for me personally bitcoin is the best and there is still no alternatives that close to bitcoin yet, but if you want to try to invest i suggest Monero and dash (not dashcoin) I think this year Monero and dash have a good improvement from the price and I can say that the price is quite stable in this year, but I have no idea how will it be in next year

The stable condition it wasn't meaning if will be best alternative of bitcoin and especially about ETH while the fork in a row was happening everytime, and this condition mean of ETH wasn't becoming such good alt coin for BTC, If we may think about the price and volume ETH still number 2 below of bitcoin today.

Hi,

Everybody likes different coins.
Remember that the true value of a (crypto)coin is determined by what you can do with it. If it is completely useless, forget about it. If there's a project behind the currency, you may invest in that cryptocurrency, if you like the project, but be careful, some projects never born. Watch some currencies and project, and if one of them is ready to be achieved, you can go and invest.

I really liked the Reddcoin project that was to be the social currency, and I bought some Reddcoin at low price. The price did 100% and fell to 0%, but I've stacked a bit of coins, so I've more value than when I invested.

Anyways, keep in mind you may take your benefits/profits when you've done a good performance ~10% to 60% on medium-term cryptocurrency investment. Don't stay a long time in an altcoin investment, because it can easily fell to -40%/-60% in a day, even for the greatest cryptocurrencies like Ethereum.

I hope this could help you.

Arpetuos

Actually, there are no such things that can be said as best alternative to bitcoins. Because all of the altcoins are just a clone of bitcoins, that's most of them cannot meet the same price value of bitcoin though they can build a big community in bitcoin world.

Why ask for the alternative when the best itself is already available to you. Anyway, I'm not sure but what I have read on the internet last few days I would say it's ethereum because it's innovative too (as read somewhere on the internet). I also started collecting them from faucet for the last few days.

I have not seen any at the moment maybe in near future, it will be good to see a project with a selfless developer like Satoshi instead most of these developers are only looking for payday but some will mention his 1 million Bitcoin, but someone need to keep mining the coins then to keep the chain alive and I don't think in his widest dream He would have envisioned Bitcoin hitting this height it has reached now and also how many of todays developers would have over $700 million sitting in one place for 7 years without touching it, we also know what happens with Steemit but the greediness of the developers has draw the project back.

If any altcoin could be bitcoin's alternative asset clearly we could all see it but still bitcoin carries the flag and seems like not any time soon we see any real one.

Yeah. No coin is best when you are investing. Sometimes best coin will not guarantee profit for us. Well for me, as long as this coin gives profit. I consider it best coin. Even the baddest coin for others can be the best for me as long as it generate decent profit.

But if you are looking for one. You can try investing in ICO coins because it is less likely scams because developers are starting to build that coin a name and I'm sure it will generate profit maybe not that big.

Ico? i think it is more risky to invest in ICO coins before their release sometimes they are selling a token and after few months end of distribution  instead they are releasing it in exchange site they're ran.. so it still risky..
For me for safety that you can make profit there is legit way and basic without analyzing the altcoin..
Use our coinmarket cap we can see the rankings and choose the top 20 altcoin in the list choose 5 altcoin or more don't stay in one altcoin because it takes time before you can make profit.. they have slow movement of the price but you can wait spread your bitcoin in to different altcoin and wait and monitor the price until you can sell it in the right time to make profit..

I think this is the best advise. Since being at the top traded coins, it is a good list  since it has a big capitalization and community support. I always check the www.coinmarketcap.com whenever I  check for a coin.

hello everyone, i would like to invest in cryptocurrencies apart from bitcoins which cryptocurrency is advisable to invest in

Aside from bitcoin, there is no other crypto that can considered as "advisable" to invest in since other alts can't reached what is the price b behaviour status of bitcoin today. Yes there will be probably other alts that can established a good price but for me I don't considered that as enough basis to think that a certain alt will share it's value from bitcoin.

Advices might harm you since altcoin investment is really risky even with a crypto that has a good promise of developments in the future. Even looking at those top crypto at coinmarket.com or any related site won't help since "advice" must be come with a good output. What you must do is to play with the alts instead. Test and put a small amount and see how far it will goes and check the outputs. Other traders also participate in an ICO where profits are come and go. Some able to ride the pump but others aren't. This is how altcoin trades work, playing with the risk.

Anyways you didn't come back yet to check this concern of yours.

Any investment is going to be a gamble. There is no way to know if any coin will ever become as popular as Bitcoin.
If anything has a chance, it would probably be something that already has strong support,
like Ethereum or Monero.
Both of those would probably be a decent long-term investment.

Various coin with a lot of kind of problems, A coin with a lot of fork, Terrible dev, scam purpose.
It was already completing the answer for best alt right now.

Gotta agree with most of this, except I'd like to say that some of the altcoins I've used have confirmation times that are so much faster than bitcoin.  And I haven't used that many, mainly Dash and doge and litecoin.  I would certainly not say any of those are better than bitcoin, but they're not useless or worthless by any means.

OP, I'd do some serious research before actually buying anything, else you can lose everything pretty damn quick.  But if you're looking to sock away money in cryptocurrency then just stick with bitcoin.

I suggest you to use bitcoins always. Don't exchange all your money into any altcoin. The volatility of altcoins is higher than bitcoins, more dangerous, the altcoin price can increase or decrease very easily without certains.
Looking the news and most commented altcoins I see Ethereum (ETH) to make profit, because the prices are increasing and the most stable are Litecoin (LTC) and DogeCoin (DOGE).

since we are talking about investing then for sure bitcoin is the best , other coins may make you more profit but they are not stable while bitcoin is moving up steadily so I think you should only hold bitcoin
alt market is unpredictable and there is much gambling there , ETH was doing great at the beginning of the year and now it's suffering
I just hold bitcoin and avoid the stress that comes from holding other alts

For me i don't want to find any alternative for bitcoins since it gather more strength and price keeps rising, thats why i would go rathe to it, and maybe i will find another alternative if the bitcoins price crash to annoying level but for now i will enjoy its pump, dump and never ending flactuations, and surely we can earn by it if we just stick for it at this moment.

hello everyone, i would like to invest in cryptocurrencies apart from bitcoins which cryptocurrency is advisable to invest in
If you are looking for a long term profit I highly advice that you check up coinmarketcap, check up coins with most number of volume and it's price chart,if you are looking for a start up coin,I highly recommend that you check up Ebitz, massnetwork, bash and Icobid,in my opinion these are all winners

you very bad recomended
if you recomended about ico selling is all very bad,
ebitz coin is scam, massnetwork and icobid selling ico is low interest with low in collect bitcoin in ico selling

if want buy in ico selling must choice good dev, and much team dev and marketing
and then use escrow in ico selling

I strongly disagree with ZEC in this day, the dumping period still a long and there is a chance for the price was going down below 0.05.
May ETH will better than it, So zec wasn't becoming the right choice.

Personally I don't think that bitcoin has any serious competitors yet, but obviously a lot of them have better technology. However the technology isn't the most important - i think it is the business model. Most altcoins are benefiting the founder, while bitcoin really isn't.

Probably Monero is the closest, but still pretty far.

Although I am not yet mining it,Burst seems to offer as a good alternative to Bitcoin, for the simple reason that it can be mine by anyone ,it's asic proof, uses your hard drive to mine Burst and the community is growing fast this is my best bet ..

If you want to earn fast and risk while doing so then focus on flavour of the month ICO. If you want to invest your money wisely then pick bitcoin and hold.
I won't waste my time with countless shitty alts and lose mi mid because of the drama surrounding them.

I recommend you just go with bitcoin mate. If you are going with altcoin then try some legitimate ICOs, that will profit you the most out of all investments. Picking the pump and dump is getting harder and harder by the day, I wouldn't recommend doing it.

The closest competitor right now is obviously Ethereum, but the price is dying. Bitcoin is more consistent with its returns.

Nothing is better than bitcoin, i had invest in various alt coin and this year the volatility of alt coin is really unstable, so i dont really can suggest any alt coin for now, the one that show great promises is only monero, but lately the price also dropping, so better hold to bitcoin for now

In terms of functionality,Monero and doge may have a chance that if bitcoin just magically disappears or core devs start centralizing it.In terms of investment, nothing, not even close to the statistics bitcoin has shown over the years. You can invest in the ICO's and profit after they launch,if the coin is not dumped by the scammers.

I think do not select ETH for now, many rumors spread about the bad things ETH and also the price is still not stable, try to chose top 13 in http://coinmarketcap.com/ (http://coinmarketcap.com/)
