Title: TRC ZERO CONFIRMATIONS!? What is going on?
Post by: nameface on April 07, 2013, 05:42:57 PM
I sent some TRC hours ago and have yet to receive my first confirmation. What gives?

There's been a lot of threads on this over the past few days. Basically, people with large hashing power are exploiting the quick confirmation times to bring the network to a halt. So no new blocks are being mined and transactions aren't going through.

Did Sunny King's difficulty algorithm not fix the chain?  I think he extended it to 12 or 24 hours or something like that, that is, these are the timespans from which to calculate the exponential weight averages from, but that's still a fairly short period of time and you can attack by mining like crazy for a couple hours and then hopping back on a while later.

GROOOOOAN! I knew I should've converted back to LTC to transfer!

Confirming now, albeit slowly. Definitely improving

I did not fix anything in terracoin, I only told the dev about the 51% difficulty collapsing vulnerability.

In an attempt of dealing with the oscillation exploit you proposed the Terracoin dev chose to implement a difficulty adjustment with averaging interval of 720 blocks while keeping the adjustment interval still at 30 blocks. This approach turned out to be a wild amplifier that swings difficulty through 5 orders of magnitude back and forth. The fault lies mainly not with ASIC miners but the faulty adjustment algorithm.

Thanks Tacotime! Sheezh.

coinotron is still solving 90% of the blocks if they are on a block for several hours don't expect a confirm until they do

This is what happens when fixes are quickly pushed out without any review.

I was there for the first asic 51% lag,

terracoin was fine, then a guy came on one of the forums and said sorry I put my asic on it for a little while... and it lagged for half a day...

this is the second time.  sunny king knows more than me, but I'd never promote inflation, lots of those ideas around ppc goes against my senses.

terracoin is sketch though.

even if they put fixes into the terracoin algorhythm will it actually protect against asics?  the problem needs to be fixed and peer reviewed if you want anyone to take this coin seriously

if there are no miners (or just a few), whatever the efforts the developers put into their fixes, anyone with a few GPUs can achieve the same ; increase diff then leave, whatever chain you choose.

market & profitability sites also helped getting to this point ; any other chain barely above 100%, with a relatively correct current hashrate is now exposed to the same problem : miners will just switch to the greenest chain on those sites, progressively leaving 'your' chain without any miner, making the thing unminable for others...

So my coins (and I'm sure the coins of many others) are in perpetual limbo? This keeps getting worse.
