Title: [ANN] Bitvenders.com Bitcoin ATM (Beta)
Post by: JayCoin on April 08, 2013, 04:50:21 AM
Announcing Bitvenders.com Bitcoin ATM system

This project is in Beta, but it will allow you to build your own Bitcoin ATM machine.

Overview: The Bitvenders system allows anyone in the world to build and manage their own Bitcoin ATM.  The Bitvenders system consists of two parts; Kiosk software that is free to download and a website that manages the functions of the Bitcoin ATM/Vending machine kiosk.  The kiosk works by a user entering a destination Bitcoin address and then inserting cash into a bill validator.  A bitcoins are then sent to the address instantaneously at the current market value plus a fee set by the kiosk owner. Bitvenders will collect a small fee from the transaction (< 1% , Bitvenders fee is set to 0% during Beta).

To get started, here is a list of components needed to setup a basic system:

  • Bill acceptor compatible with MEI serial protocol (EBDS) such as  MEI cashflow AE2400 , AE2600 or AE2800. The MEI SC series validators should also work, but haven't been tested yet. (The SC series will probably need to be used for non US currency)
  • Serial cable for bill validator
  • A web cam
  • A windows 7 computer
  • RS232 to USB converter
  • Touch screen with at least 1024x768 resolution (optional)
  • Kiosk Software at https://bitvenders.com/portal/download/BVKsetup0_0_5.exe
  • Bitvenders account at https://bitvenders.com/portal/

Video Demonstration of my Bitcoin ATM demo unit will be here soon...

WARNING: This is an early release so that Kiosk owners can try out the system before Bitvenders is ready for large scale operation. Only deposit small amounts of Bitcoin into accounts for testing.

Yes, if there is enough interest.

The bitcoin is deposited and managed through the website.

Looking for anyone with some public (indoor) location in the northwest suburbs of Chicago to host my demo unit for while to get some user feedback. I will cut you in on any profits. PM me.

Project has been stalled.  Not enough interest in it.  US implementation would have many legal issues to resolve.  If someone is serious about implementing an ATM, I will continue development.

Hi Jaycoin,

I am amazed that there has not been that much interest!! You set up looks fantastic! I am certainly interested!

There are 4 other options I have researched:

http://lamassubtc.com/
https://cash2btc.com/#
https://bitcoinatm.com/
https://robocoinkiosk.com

Lamassu-

Positives:
1. Compact, efficient and set up/designed for Bitcoin
2. Sleek and professional
3. No franchise
4. No transaction fee

Negatives:

1. Need to import
2. Out of my budget even though fairly priced

cash2btc-

Positives:

1. DIY no need to import hardware to Australia
2. Cheaper than Lamassu
3. Monitor can advertise

Negatives:

1. Franchise
2. 1% transaction fee.
3. continuity of operation. Central website so if company folds then machine does not work
4. The promoted set up looks slap stick. Could be more professional looking. Interface is not aesthetically pleasing. Works well but seems amateur.

Bitcoinatm and robocoin – These are both fantastic as they do cash in and out and as such innumerably more valuable and would get more custom. Both however are large and most probably of my budget let alone the cost of importing such big machines. BitcoinATM has a built in 3% fee on top of the operator.

I am tempted to get a Lamassu. It is professional and set up to go. Unfortunately, it is more than I wish to gamble upon. I still see an atm device as a gamble but really love the idea of it. I think transaction fees must be as low as possible otherwise people will compare it to other conventional ATMs and think why would I use it.

I also love the idea of setting up your own and the cash2btc is cheaper cutting the loss of the risk factor. I am down with a diy attitude and a simple utilitarian device yet I think a Bitcoin atm however must look very professional and familiar to allow people to trust it and be curious if new to btc and are sceptics. I have great concerns with cash2btc for this reason.

Your system seems very similar to to cash2btc but has a far more polished look. You seem to understand that the image is very important to consumer confidence. You offer the software for free unlike cash2btc. Are you able to offer that the device can show adverts when not in transaction? This would be for two reasons. One, to promote the local bitcoin community and two, to advertise the exchange that I would utilise in return for a cut on the transaction fee.

ps. I downloaded the software but it would not run. It came up with an issue regarding 32 v 64 bit. Does it matter which OS I have? Please note that I also tried to run it on Windows 7 but in Virtualbox on a Mac. Would this matter?

Thanks!

bitbandit

Hi Jaycoin,

I am assuming your project did not go anywhere?
I ended up buying a Project Skyhook. Many others have also but have got no support. The makers have seemed to have abandoned the project.
Any chance you can adapt your system for the machines?
Better still any chance you can develop software that hooks the machines up to an exchange? This would be highly desirable in Australia as one could then avoid the extra cost of sales tax on the bitcoin itself.
I am sure many skyhook owners would pay for a good solution!

Site has been down for a while. Not enough interest in people building their own ATM.
