Thanks phil, well it is as figured. Silence for Chinese = 60dB. Their are all deaf from their 90dB mines.

Could you show a screen of the dashboard? Maybe its overcooling the thing and we could hack it down somewhat?

60db? That seems a bit excessive after their claims of a home miner. My S9 is running at 53db at about 1metre away.

Oh fuck, so they've made an autotune firmware for this too.  :-\
I was already planning to change my settings freely.

Ugh!  No fan control??  From BiteMe's own website-R4 manual.pdf:

5.1.3 When "Customize the fan speed percentage” is checked, the fan speed can be controlled by the user.

Another undocumented feature!  So Happy!!  ::)

are you really surprised though? you're Pro level, this is geared for home-consumer / cross over user. We all have wish lists, but can you imagine the additional support tinkering requires? mix in noobs and purchases on CC , and you have a bad mix.

Well they could just give me the old firmware and old HEX-file for the hash board (I have a PICkit3, so no problem) and I'd have a miner that I thought I would be receiving. I can't see how hard support tinkering that would be, sharing few files for me that already do exist.

edit: I wrote them an e-mail and asked about the possibility to "convert" it to be just like the batch 1 R4 miners.

I moved it into my friends office.  I took about 1 dozen photos

I used this psu I paid 129  it pulls 825 watts at kwatt meter

unboxing notice it is very close to 24 inches long  this may cause a size charge for your shipping

good packing idea with the center foam

and some back up bubble wrap

just the controller connected  I used an extender to allow the controller to be reached.

note the heatsinks  are where air is exhausted so you could put some pull fans there

better shot of controller note a friction sleeve for the fan wire or a grommet pretty good for bitmain.  actual attention to detail

power use at the kwatt meter is really good  821-824 using 120 volts  and the rosewill quark plat psu

Do you have a sound meter reading?

Title: Re: R4 Arrived Photos thought etc
Post by: philipma1957 on December 07, 2016, 08:39:49 PM
sound levels

from about four feet.

this is not as quiet as a sidehack modded s7-ln
this is not as quiet as an avalon 4.1 that is downvolted and under clocked.

In my friends office it is fine
It is definitely quieter then the avalon 721.

It will need ssh to set freq and fan lower.  well that is a guess

The manual is out of date.  print it get a pdf of it asap

In my case the sound is low enough that I can use it.

But if you want it to be a little slower no can do as

The tabs in the red rectangles are gone.

This means you are fucked unless they give you the older info.

Now I am not a lawyer, but in the USA this would be grounds for a lawsuit if not fixed by bitmaintech.
This is my non- lawyer non- qualified opinion.

Seeing as the manual fan speed control is gone do you think it's now correlated to the freq it's set at? Is the freq adjustable at all? Or is that auto?

I received mine today also.  The Advanced tab in Miner Configuration is gone also.  BMminer version is 2.0.0  (Fri Nov 25), HW Vers. 4.8.1.3.  Running less than 1/2 hour, I'm getting a average of 557 frequency with 101/79 temp in a 77 deg. F room (fan speed 2,040).  8,064GH/s (avg) w/ HW errors 0.0001%.  Power Supply is showing about 875watts pull on a 1,200w Gold PS, so add about 10% at the wall.

Basically the same as me other then the watts.  I have a plat you have a gold.

My fan is between 1800 and 2100 depends on room temp.

My freq is the same as yours 557.

I got this answer:
Code:
Dear customer,

The batch 2 differs from batch 1. They have different hardware. The batch 2 can not be converted to first batch by upgrading firmware.
The design of auto-tune settings is for better operation stability.

Thanks for your understanding.

Has anyone tried to see the bmminer config via SSH?
Is there any possibility to write different values for fan control or frequencies?

edit: this is how the bmminer.conf looks like with my non-autotune S9

How long will the fan last on these, vertical tower fans don't last very long...Are replacements cheap ?

The sound must be highly dependent upon environment.  In my house, which is 74 degrees, it reads 51db from 1 foot away.  Nearly silent.

Same here.  The fan I have on in the room is louder.

I'm more than pleased with how quiet it is.  In fact I can overlook the lack of fan and clock control since all I ever used it for was for noise reduction.

yes to follow up  I pulled it from my home at 80f

put it in my friends office at 72f and boom 53db.

he is happy with it  as am I.

Next week I will drop into his office do some photos and meter readings.

Also pitch is good  not a nasty whistle like the s-5 s-7 s-9
my kwatt reads 821 watts 120 volt using a rosewood quark psu

my pool reading just under  8,000 gh

That is a direct result of using the longitudinal blower vs fans. The blower produces a linear stream of airflow vs the mass of highly turbulent air a fan makes. Smooth airflow hitting the heat sinks means minimal noise from turbulence and also more to the point of 'pitch', with no rotating blades moving in a circle very close to the heatsink fins there is no possibility of the siren effect. Should be just a soft 'whoosh'.

I really like the lower pitched sound as well. These units turned out to be exactly what I needed for an office. Given that we have 3 on free power now I guess I can expect to ROI under a year for sure. That is really my only goal with these. I hope to end up ahead by 50%-100% within 2 years.

On my R4 on Chain 8 I see a chip 2  temp between 95 to 115. On Chain 7  chip 2 remains steady at 67. What gives with this fluctuation.

my guess is the bottom board is cooler and the top board is warmer.

some of the heat from the bottom board must rise into the top board

I get the same wide difference in chip temps on one board, and more closely aligned temps on the other board, but I'm standing my R4 up vertically!  I think it has more to do with where/how well the TC is attached to the chip/board/whatever...  :P

While I don't own an R4, you might be able to "level out" the temps by standing the R4 in it's side, assuming that's possible. I did something similar with an SP20, though it was a more square shape at the end  end and easy to do.

Thanks for sharing pictures.
Its bigger than I expected.

I know its cost you a small fortune to buy, but how difficult do you think it would be to improve the cooling, fans, thermal paste?
As I am fairly good with a screwdriver and soldering iron I would of probably had it in bits by now.

Its kind of a compulsion I have.

I think the exhaust could add pull fans easy peasy.

there is even a spare fan jack

I  have to admit I think the R4 is one of the most interesting miners available. I am curious if R4 owners have seen the issues that the S9  has. I wanted  to jump  on the batch 2, but without some more data on reliability I decided to wait.  I would love to get your feedback on the R4. I am very tempted if another batch is released to pickup one or two to give them a try.  I think the idea of mounting  them on the side makes sense. Has anyone  rigged up a mount yet  for side mounting these? Thanks for sharing your R4 with us!  ;D

Less than 1kw.
Still makes me think how far asics have come.
The chassis means business.
Id love to be able to hear its noise output.
Any chance of a youtube clip?

I could do a Facebook clip.

but it is in my friends office.  which means thurs night would be the soonest I can do it.

I could bring the sound meter and my camera.

This is a good piece of gear for an office.

Power and internet are pretty stable 80 to 100 days at a time with no dropouts.

temps are never lower then 60f or higher then 85f

So Phill, A7 vs R4.

How do they fare against each other in terms of reliability and heat?

My 1 concern with mounting them on their side is the fan bearings.
Odds are they are simple sleeve bearings made for the axle being horizontal meaning minimal shaft support if tipped on its side. Pretty safe bet what support there is is not a ball bearing which would make things more forgiving... Anyone have a closeup pic of the bearing area?

I got mine standing on end...  I'll see if I can't get a good look at the bearings and report back.  Seems ok so far!
