This is such a stupid thing to compare bitcoin to. I don't understand why these big wonderful news idiots still don't realize it. It's like comparing a start up tech company stock to a wheat company's stock. It's so random wtf.

I can definitely see bitcoin being something great in the next few years but cannot really see gold being anywhere soon. Gold might go up 100%, even, in line with inflation. But bitcoin will probably beat inflation.

wow it is always the same thing. if bitcoin had a bad year it is the end of crypto. but if bitcoin had a good year, like this one, then people freak out too. guess where the roller coaster is going next after it was climbing up fore a while. btw i do not get the comparison to gold all the time. gold serves a different purpose and was never meant to break some interest rates like some seem to expect it here. 

as far as price is concerned,bitcoin is certainly a better option for it can give huge returns over time but it is also a bit risky as prices are very unstable too.Gold gives financial security to investor

Bitcoin has been more valuable in that aspect on growth. So I would rather have a whole bitcoin than a gram of gold anyday! :P

The numbers do show that bitcoin has been the winner in terms of investment.
There is always going to be people that you just can't bring to bitcoin because it is not physical, even though most gold dealers don't deal in physical gold.

I feel safer with bitcoin because of the 21mil bct cap, the fed can print away to their hearts content and who really knows what the accessible gold reserves really are, probably way above what they tell us to keep the price high.

Yeah you are absolutely right in the aspect on growth bitcoin is better rather than gold, and bitcoin always increase the value years by years. Bitcoin also more profitable if we see that fluctuations.
But gold isn't too bad, in aspect on trusted, gold win dude. The most of countries in the world recognize and it is stable money.

Bitcoin = 21 Million supply, may bitcoin will be a rare stuff with fastest.
Gold = real physical and still get mining from a long time ago.

Its funny the report says that gold can be sent as gift, we can pay with bitcoin for those purpose, and we can create an wallet with bitcoin and let the person choose what to do with them, exchange or buy a gift, bitcoin isnt material and its somethign that does scares investors, but the results of bitcoin not only this year, but for a long time has been always better then any other currencie.

How many threads are we going to see in this forum comparing bitcoin to gold. Gold for me is currently more trustworthy then bitcoin, bitcoin is too unstable,while the price of gold is continuing to rise. If you have gold, you don't need to worry .

Personally I think anyone with enough money would be wise to invest in some of both.
Gold as a long-term safety net.
Bitcoin as a short-term investment that has the risk to gain or lose value, but the possibility of a larger return.

If someone wants to invest his money on a safe gain over the course of years, then he would choose the gold.

Lots of peoples is agreed bitcoin is the best way to invest their money online. It's grow significantly.

And gold, everyone knows gold is like honey. It will be still sweet even you keep it for 20 years. And the price is never bad.

What makes bitcoin takes a lead from gold  is the accessibility. Bitcoin can be accessed anywhere as long as you have internet. Not only that you  can access it but you can own satoshi even in cents while you cannot have gold if you only have cents.

So in short, the two things that give bitcoin to move faster than gold aside from the limited supply are its accessibility and its retail value.

As OP quoted bitcoin is far better compared to gold with its increasing price and profit margin. In the past people considered gold for storing big values. But now people who were aware of digital currency have started using bitcoin for storing values.

In my opinion, it does not matter what is better. What matters is will some or even all that speculative value in gold all transfer to Bitcoin? I believe yes. Bitcoin's real potential speculative value has not yet reflected in its current price.

Yes, bitcoin is a better investment than gold. I say so as bitcoin price can change in minutes and just might bring you a very large profit, which is not possible much with gold. Also, there are easier and faster ways to invest bitcoin, like trading, and gambling. Easy to earn also. So bitcoin is better investment if you can time it right your profits will maximise.

Gold is physical while Bitcoin is digital. You can only use Bitcoin if there is Internet or 3G around and you can not send gold immediately from this area to another area. Gold has been recognized for centuries while Bitcoin have its first step on this planet. Bitcoin still need more time to be fully understood by people. However, each of them has difference advantages and disadvantages. Only users can barely know everything about them. Bitcoin is valuable because the demand of r it is getting higher and higher but it is hard to compare the two. If there was a world war and the internet didn't exist, then bitcoin would be worthless, but gold will always be around, as it has been for thousands of years, but for now we can still find bitcoin valuable.

The characteristics of bitcoin are objectively better than the ones in gold. Gold is a deprecated piece of metal that is just useless beyond its network effect. You could say its used in certain objects but it's not that necessary. As a store of value and as a way to move wealth it's next to no competition against bitcoin.

investing in bitcoin is generally a lot better than any other investment in the world and it has been this way at least for some time now. but i think it is not right to compare it with gold, since bitcoin is a still new whereas gold is a lot older and also bitcoin is not just an investment like gold you can use it as a currency and that will always give it a big edge.

in my opinion bitcoin now better then gold with the rate of progressing value and mobility and the security of bitcoin is better then gold so you can't sell gold internationaly there will be extra fees on that and it's more secure with bitcoin to store your bitcoin then gold

For short term sure bitcoin is best, you would gain a substantial profit within few months but for long terms like 5-10 years plus, I'm not so sure because bitcoin is very volatile, yes I expect it rise but you can never say but with gold its pretty safe choice for long term investment.

Both Gold and Bitcoin have great potential and needed worldwide indeed. But Gold isn't accessible online easily, and not accepted as payment processor , we need to convert it into cash or fiat usually, while Bitcoin is accessible for everyone with internet around the world, and in addition its supported as payment processor to buy and sell goods and services online on many marketplaces.

I think bitcoin investment is better than invest on gold.Since bitcoin price is increasing rapidly and hopeffully it will cross 1000$ soon.Besides, we can use our bitcoin anytime in our emergency.But we can't use gold for that.Again, holding bitcoin in cold wallet is more secure than keeping gold.

Its hard to compare, its like apples and oranges.

Are you talking about your own internet? Because it is never going to happen when the internet gets vanished from the world as it will be a disaster for the world and i guess that wont happen anytime, and bitcoin without having any physical shape or form can be better than gold in some ways like its price increase and some other factors.

If one person has say x amount of money, and he invests in gold and not in Bitcoin I would call him really stupid. Bitcoin is insane, gold is good but not my first choice of investment. I would prefer Bitcoin over gold any day, it's strong, price rises, easy to exchange and it's paperless, it's secure. Would love and suggest people only to go for Bitcoins.

I think bitcoin and gold investment are now kind of same. Bitcoin is volatile for sure but so as the commodity Gold at some extent. I believe its the time to invest in Bitcoin as it is still unknown to many people, so I think it has a high chance of growing and to be in profit.

Unlike bitcoin gold is constantly being mined and turned into jewelry so there is always a demand so the gold is going to stay on the market as long as human lives . sure the bitcoin has its own value and has seen a big pick in the price in the last couple of years compared to gold but you can't compare tow different things it is like comparing food and drink you need them both, plus the bitcoin may end at one point considering how many governments are making it illegal and considering how hard it is to mine it .

They are different in purpose if you are a virtual guy then you invest on Bitcoin as you can do so much about it because you know where to use it like online/magazine subscriptions or explicit things. About Gold you have to exchange it to fiat and risking your personal information about it the opposite when you use bitcoin.

I would say Bitcoin is a better investment than gold. The problem with gold is that it works only as a way of storing value. In the case of Bitcoin, in addition to being a safe and efficient way to store value, it is also an efficient way of to send and receive money over the internet. Moreover, all this occurs in a decentralized manner.

Nobody can tell that which is better because Gold outlast for a century that it is always increasing value  and it is seen by the naked eye while Bitcoin itself is a new player in the game of virtual world. Time is more reliable for me, but Bitcoin really shows the fluctuation that no currency has ever did.

Well, it is very relative to think that a greater performance is necessarily a better advantage,  because most bitcoiners need to be aware that the price of the bitcoin needs a more consistent stability and less volatility to make the Btc a reliable currency.

Well, no. If bitcoin is a stable currency relative to the USD then that means bitcoin is essentially no different in value to the USD... And USD is a centralised currency that can be manipulated.

Bitcoin should be a store of value instead of store of USD value.

I dont think bitcoin can be good for long term investment. It can drasticaly drops the value when big whales dump their holdings. Gold is more stable than bitcoin. So if you want growing money safely. Then gold is good for you. If you want earn more, then bitcoin is good for you. Bitcoin can really make you more profit. But for stability, gold is better. It is tested for many centuries.

every investment there are advantages and disadvantages. bitcoin is investing for the short term. while gold is a safe investment that requires a fairly long period of time. we should be able to choose which ones fit with expertise and our ability to invest.

i think its not to compare bitcoin with gold because if we see now, bitcoin is not use by the most people, but gold, everybody know as a good investment and the price is stable for short, middle, and long term. the other reason is gold have physical form depend of bitcoin. but i agree that bitcoin is better than gold for future because the blockchain technology is design to make the transaction more simple and more low fee to do. but unfortunately, the most people is not yet to know about bitcoin and government itself is not ready to make a good statement about bitcoin so we should wait for some other time for this.

Great article. But it think it's not proper to compare the performance of these securities. They are not all similarly situated. Gold has been in the financial industry and the world for an extremely long time. Gold has been the main medium of exchange for thousands of years and somehow until now. Unlike bitcoin, where it has just started and not yet even a decade has passed since it's use. Gold in the 1970's had a similar increase in price. It is not a 100% per year but it was 43.14% in 1972, 66.79% in 1973, and 72.59% in 1974. And it also hit a 120.57% more than the current rise of bitcoin.

I guess, maybe, Bitcoin will also stabilize like gold in the future where it would be more trusted and adopted greatly by the world. We haven't seen the last of the 100% increases in bitcoin. We might even see a 1,000%. Who knows.

I agree to you, bitcoin can be invested of for a long term though but you must face the risk if something happens. There is no 100% investment I guess, because if it is 100% no one will be needing a investment instead they will borrow from banks.

In my opinion we can't really compare these 2 assets as bitcoin is digital while gold is physical. Gold is the safer choice if you wanna preserve your wealth for long term,but with bitcoin you can profit on short time as it is very volatile,but also on long time as if bitcoin will be used more widely we could see a huge increase in price overtime. Anyway I recommend investing in both of them as they offer you different advantages.  ;) 8)

in the past 2 years that i have been buying and hodling and also doing some small trades with bitcoin i have made 3.5 times the amount that i could ever made with just investing in Gold so i say bitcoin is a lot better investment than gold could ever be for me.

It's clear now that bitcoin has surpassed gold to become the ultimate safe haven on earth, but there are still tons of gold bugs that constantly say bitcoin is a scam. Of course they are old people that don't even understand bitcoin.

Well, you were trying to discussed the rates between bitcoin and gold. Right maybe now bitcoin price is a far much better than gold but the thing here is that bitcoin could collapsed anytime time(we hope not to tho) while on the other hand (Gold could remain or increase it's value when time passes by)

Can't say which one is better. In some ways Bitcoin is better and in some Gold. Bitcoin price fluctuates a lot more than gold and therefore could be a better thing for traders. Bitcoin also offers faster long term profit but its only been there for some time now compared to gold which has been here since the beginning

There are basically two sides of it. Gold is a tangible asset whereas bitcoin is not. Gold is a legal asset and bitcoin is still under confusion. So it depends up on the investor and his risk taking capability. If a person want too earn much higher return along with a significant amount of risk, then he should go for bitcoin for long term.

But if one investor, want a safe and legal way of investing and want to play safe, then gold is a better option for him. But one thing I must agree that, the return on bitcoin is way much higher that any other conventional investment. But  for safe players, gold is a better asset to invest in.   

Yes, I think this comparison is a bit unfair, but what investors want is profit doesn't worthing the currency or the ore and currently Bitcoin is hte best option to make profit relatively fast. Bitcoin seems to be better now but maybe it is just winning the battle, not the war, you know. Yes, now the price is growing, yes, you can actually use btc to pay for something more than you can use gold. However, gold has shown its stability throuout the history, so it would be very hard for bitcoin to gain the same authority.

of the current statistics, bitcoin is really beyond gold. Well, bitcoin prices rise so quickly make investors pay attention to bitcoin. today people are more happy to see because bitcoin bitcoin have prices really high. if this continues, investors may bitcoin will surpass gold investors.

Don't invest anything you cannot afford to lose.  Both markets, precious metals and crypto's are too small and too easy to manipulate.  Just when you need money of course that is when the bottom will have fallen out of either or both.  If you follow the precious metals markets at all you may be aware of the fraud, price fixing, and other games being played by the big boys under the nose of regulators who look the other way.  I am sure the same thing is going on here in the crypto markets.

So trying to pick which one is best is really a fools errand.  Hold some of both, but don't stake your life, retirement, or anything important to you on it.  To get an idea of what I am talking about pull up that chart for bitcoin from 2009 to present.  Now look at that giant crash that happened.  Same crazy stuff has happened in the gold markets.  Some of it based on fundamentals, some of it based on fraud and manipulation.  Either way if the timing is bad you could be in a world of hurt. 

And lets just say that state sponsored entities are not friendly to either metals or crypto.  They allow them to exist right now.  One day they may not allow them to exist.  Again don't put all your eggs in either one of these baskets.  Be aware of ALL the risks, not just the ones obvious today.

I think that going forward bitcoin is one of if not the best investment around, not so sure about a short term investment.  Long term i just cannot see any fundamental weaknesses.  bar some genius seeing a problem everyone else has missed i can see bitcoin at $10000 in 5 years.

107+% is better than anything in the world.. hoping to touch 1000+$ soon.. I don't think it will stay there for long time, again will get stabilized n gets to normal rate soon..

In the long run I see a lot of potential, but some problems need to be solved for Bitcoin to be adopted by a large number of people, without major problems. One of the biggest problems is probably the problem of scalability. As far as I know, Segwit and Flextrans are some of the proposed solutions, but there is still no consensus on which is the best.

Some of these suggestions could seriously hurt BTC.  Too much controversy and you could get a repeat of ETH with a fork causing major fracturing.  SegWit if I understand it could move transactions off of the network causing damage to miners and the network.  So it is going to be a hard sell to get the 95% to get SegWit.  Granted something does need to happen to fix the transaction problems and scale.  But so far the suggestions appear questionable.   

Then throw in another Mt Gox, or some sort of heavy handed regulatory moves and everything could head south FAST.  The point being is that it doesn't take much to upset the apple cart here. 

I realize when the price goes up like it has recently EVERYONE gets mega bullish.  I am with you, it is exciting to see BTC and other crypto's taking off and flying.  However as fast is it comes it can also go...  In that regard it is appropriate to compare BTC to gold because the market responds just as violently there as well. 

If you get the timing right and know went to get into and out of the market you can probably make some money.  However that is a tall order.  Also what is your time horizon.  Are you talking 5 years, 10 years, 20 years, 50 years?  Each time horizon requires different strategies to ensure you have access to your funds when you need them.   

While the issue of scailability definitely has to be fixed sometime soon, there is no real way to get a definite consensus on what has to be changed to the the controlling nature all of the current dev systems provide. Segwit is ok and offers one solution to the issue, but is screws up the dev structure we have right now.

Nothing is confirmed as best right now. It's all subjective.

Why you state such an insult opinion without any solid statement, I mean, we are discussing about long term investment here. Even if we compare gold and land/estate, it's all right to do as both of it has high value too.
I'm still wondering which one is better for the long hoardings that lead to conclusion, better to have both of them whether gold and bitcoin, even though I prefer to have more bitcoin due to highly increasing price.

so the conclusion is both bitcoin and gold is better. the things have their own advantages and disadvantages. it is difficult to say bitcoin is better that gold because bitcoin also has weakness like it is limited to 21 million although we can get it "easily", and the opposite.

It is looking better than gold as it stands for now. But we won't know for sure until it reaches more per ounce that gold costs now would we? :-\
Wait until it reaches $1200 again then we can talk about if it really is better than gold because when it reaches the $1400 then it very much well be at that point in time. ;)

I see no reason why we should be focusing on the relation between price of bitcoin and 1 ounce of gold. In many countries, gold is measured in different units and the price/ounce doesn't really make sense.
What really matters is the "trust" that people have in the asset. It will be difficult for Bitcoin to attain the same kind of trust, as gold has been around for thousands of years.

Bitcoin beat gold this year, does no mean it is better than gold. Gold has beat bitcoin in other years. Gold and bitcoin belong to the same internal value category and will shine during turmoils.

Agree, but with more and more people discover bitcoin, bitcoin tends to increase in its value faster than gold, at least these years. Both are excellent hedge against inflation and preservation of the value.

I have trust in a physical thing of value. So I would store my bitcoin on some sort of hardware wallet just for that extra ease of mind that I actually have something in my hands to amount for what I do indeed have on hand of bitcoin.
That is just me and can be different for anyone else. We are individualistic beings afterall! ;D

BTCBTCBTC is BTCBTCBTC and gold is gold. They're way to different from each other and each has its own pros and cons. Instead of focusing which is better, why not get your portfolio to have both. Spreads the risk IMO.

Very true and we cant really compare a currency and a precious metal they are really different from each other.If i do really have the money to invest i would definitely choose these two things because i could really see the potential profits specially for long term.

Gold will always be stolen from people, you just cant avoid that.

Bitcoin atleast has some kind of protection against property rights violations, that are in many cases unconstitutional, but it's not like most people give a damn about constitutionality.

The Human Rights declarations are just a sham, private property is only private if it's private (like a private key)
