Title: GPU and CPU mining on same rig
Post by: cbad on April 09, 2013, 04:04:44 PM
I thought this would have come up already, but a search didn't bring up a topic on this.  Are there any disadvantages to CPU and GPU mining on the same rig?  My CPU is pretty idle when just GPU mining so I started cpu mining as well.  Am I robbing myself of precious Mh/s by doing this?  My GPU didn't take a hit but I haven't found optimal settings for my hardware yet.

I would advise against mining with your CPU. It will not come close to hashing enough to cover the extra electricity it uses, and will generate more heat inside your case, in turn heating up your GPU which could cause it to throttle or at the very least shorten it's lifespan.

You could do litecoin mining with the CPU.
Altough right now it would be more profitable to do it witht he GPU too!

Ah thanks.  I was wondering about that.  I'll probably shut down the CPU mining and see if I can squeeze more speed out of the GPU to make up for it.

Good luck! The only exception to this might be AMD's newer APUs because the higher end ones have a somewhat decent GPU inside, but I'm still not sure it would be worthwhile.

Yeah, I'd probably wait for a review or a writeup proving their effectiveness before putting up cash to experiment.  I'm waiting for my schedule to die down to build a dedicated mining machine.
