Is there a thread here or a link on the ins and outs of mining for people who aren't super techie?  :P

Something quite basic?

The easiest tool to use IMHO is minergate.
Obviously is not the best tool to mine, but it can help you to enter this world.

i would also like to point out pimp
we have a new version for all the miners needs
we have vids that guide you every step of the way and have a good friendly irc community that is always willing to help
we tried to make it easy and accessible for every miner big or small

maybe you could give it a look first at getpimp.org
and join our irc channel on the freenode channel #pimp

That gives me a serious thought - just got back in contact with Dan Gookin, I wonder if he'd be interested in writing that as a book.

 (no, not joking - I first met him back in his "editor" days BEFORE DOS for Dummies).
