For me Bitbay but do your own research and pick wisely. Crypto is not easy to pick a winner.

Do you know how marketcap calculates the coins's total capital? if a coin has 10M supply then they take an average price in at least from 5 different exchanges and multiply the price into those 10M but never actually give you the true statistics, if $1 per coin then they show total capital $10M but in reality if you try to sell 50K of said coin for $1 price you'll end up at $0.1 price for that coin and a total capital of $1M.
Best way to know which coins are worth the try is to check their buy support because only buy support is what matters.

Be careful with these coins with little marketcap, they are like that for a reason and only luck with get you on to a winner, no skill involved.

Yes, I know how marketcap is calculated and that the liquidity especially in low marketcap coins is practically non-existent. I am maybe looking for projects that have good ideas and promising teams to invest in for the long run.

Be careful with these coins with little marketcap, they are like that for a reason and only luck with get you on to a winner, no skill involved.

If you invest in these small "shitcoins" you will definitely get burned if you are not super careful.

You can find most of altcoins with their marketcap and daily trading volume at coinmarketcap
http://coinmarketcap.com/

but if you are looking to invest in such coins the make sure you do a proper research about coin before investing you hard earned money and don't invest in coins that doesn't have enough trading volume according to your investment amount.

I am asking if someone has made some research already and can give some recommendations. Coinmarketcap lists over 100 coins with marketcaps of 100k-1mil so that is a lot of research to be done  ;D

And let me clarify that the investments amounts I am thinking about would not be huge. Something that I can just forget about for a year or two and see if I have made something or lost it all :D Damn, I was sure I bookmarked some projects already for later reading, but I cannot find them anywhere..

Ain't no "best" altcoin.  They all bad, and that ain't got nothing to do wit' the mawket cap, no how.  Except the worst of the worst is at zero.

Burstcoin  (BURST).  Hovering around 1 million market cap right now.  Established, great community, and green/eco friendly HDD mining that really starting to catch on!

I don't really like to buy coins with market cap below 1 million. Most of them are junkcoins which is the reason why they are so cheap. I prefer to aim high maybe from 2 to 5 million market cap. Although the price of altcoins is more expensive in terms of market, you will have a higher chance of buying a better coin.

I have read about this before. I am not sure what to think about the HDD mining, but seems really cool!

Out of interest just a quick question. What is the daily or weekly return roughly on 12tb in btc or usd for mining at the current rate?

This should help you http://burstcoin.biz/calculator

At 12 TB you're looking at almost 26k BURST per month.  Which may not be a lot in terms of value today, but I think the coin is only going to go up...so I'm not looking to just mine and dump.

2 years old, but current development team has only been in place 1 year approx.  Very little promo/PR has been done (no pre mine or ICO)...momentum has only really started significantly since last summer.  So I look at it as established...but it has a "new" feel to it.

Mintcoin is a good one. It's a a classic, still going strong almost 3 years old now but fast and allows you to mint your own coins by saving them. For every 20,000,000 Mintcoin you save you make 1,000,000 per year!

Maidsafe.

What's up with all the smart shitcointalkers who don't understand the concept of greater than/less than? Let me enlighten you, maidsafe has a market cap of $42M, OP requested coins under or less than $1M, 42 is more than 1, so it fails this criterion. I know it's complicated, but I know you guys can do it.

My picks: Myriadcoin, Nyancoin, and Vertcoin ($880k right now, think it bumped over 1M couple days ago tho).

My apologies. It's been s long day and it's late here. I thought the OP meant $1 billion.

I think the alt coin market is maturing to a point where most "lesser value coins" wont make it but AEON might if development happens.

this is true about all the altcoins without exceptions, names doesn't matter these days they are all lacking development and innovation.
it has been becoming a common thing in altcoin market that anybody with even a small amount of programming skills goes ahead and makes a random altcoin and then he doesn't know what to do next so they stick to releasing wallet and other meaningless stuff and call that development.
and until this way changes, nothing else in altcoin market and their values is going to change.

I cant believe how many shitcoins come out everyday with the silliest names.  I just like to watch the top 10 on coinmarketcap and see what is trending.

There are actually one or two coins that keep getting mentioned that I think will go from one million to ten million market cap this next year or two. Me and many others don't talk about them much because they are still cheap and we want more. Once the first halvings happen you will see the winners more clearly.

I'll give you one that's under $10,000 market cap to watch. Flavorcoin (2flav).

Ann (will be updated in the new year) https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1494170.0 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1494170.0)

Radio station (fully licensed to broadcast with no copyright issues)  http://tunein.com/radio/FlavorCoin-Radio-s268812/ (http://tunein.com/radio/FlavorCoin-Radio-s268812/)

Has already had live dj sets and has professional voice artists doing links and announcements. More djs will be recruited in the new year. Audience building slowly and the flavorcoin twitter currently has over 6000 genuine followers.

The community is small at the moment as the project is building slowly and sustainably. The dev is working consistently to build audience, social media profile and listeners. Think about how a radio station runs and you will begin to realise how much potential there is for the use of the coin supporting it.

Not many coins at this level of market cap with so much going on.
