Even though , iPayYou (https://www.ipayyou.io/) doesn't look as good as other services such as Bitpay for example , they managed to make Starbucks accepting bitcoin in their official application (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.starbucks.mobilecard&hl=en) and that's definitly an achievement for a new service like them.
In order to use this feature , you first have a wallet in iPayYou otherwise It's not going to work. The next year already sound very promising and I can't wait to see more .

Seems interesting for some people, but considering that it uses another service layer chances are they aren't going to get a ton of interest in it. They might get some, but likely not as much as if it was direct.

Doesn't matter much to me, though. I don't use Starbucks or drink coffee at all, but I hope this benefits some of the Starbucks customers on this forum.

It is good news many companies accept bitcoins as payment method, starbucks doing smart strategy for increasing the costumers with adopt bitcoins on their coffe.  ;D

Wow. Its another accomplishment for bitcoin. Seems like bitcoin is going in a right way. I expect a lot of news like this will post in this forum this coming year 2017. Since few establishments, shops and companies are accepting bitcoin. Its a good start for them because many people are using bitcoin. We havent seen tech giant accepting bitcoin yet. Im looking forward to that.

Personaly I don't like Starbucks very much but this is another good news for Bitcoin and Bitcoin users. Especialy when such popular company starts to accept Bitcoin and this could be a good role model for others. Good marketing for Bitcoin and that is one thing that Bitcoin doesn't have enough.

We need to get to the point where you can send a payment to Starbucks from your wallet, although to accomplish this you may always need a third-party because of the confirmation times.
No one is going to sit for 45 minutes to pick up their coffee waiting for their transaction to confirm,
and no store is going to let you walk out before they know for sure they actually have payment for their goods, even if its only a $5 coffee.

Definitely, that's why we need third party to handle the payment process instantly compare to long time confirmation as usual transaction. Personally, I never try it before as my transaction not intended to such services (beverages), just conventional trading with trusted friends, so the waiting time was never be problem. But dealing with services like this, we need faster transaction s like fiat money obviously.

It's cool hope more apps will open online like that one. Though I really appreciate their services the question that comes to mind is the service fee. Is it lesser compared to actual paying in Starbucks or there are additional charges. If it is hi higher then its not so cool since its better to pay Starbucks with fiat currency rather than bitcoins in that situation.

Any store, company etc accepts bitcoin is good to increase its adoption of masses. Starbucks is a good example because drinking coffee is an everyday habit. People must tend to use buy their coffee with bitcoins. Any every day micro-payment transaction is better than a big one only once. People must use the coin very often. In this way stores will be forced to accept. Bitcoin is not only for hoarding but mainly is an electronically payment system.

Yea, the old "Bitcoin cannot be used to buy a cup of Coffee" can now be laid to rest, even though you have to do that via a third party service. One day we will have a decent scaling solution in place and then you will buy coffee from a street merchant, without any delays. We have been buying coffee and food from our local work cafeteria for a while now, but we worked on a voucher basis. You buy food vouchers and then you just use these vouchers in exchange for a cup of coffee or dougnuts.  ^smile^

That's a very good advertisement for Bitcoin. Starbucks's a trending service around here. It's trending from popular people who're telling how they love Starbucks so their followers will love it and then their followers. At least, that's what I've seen most of the times. Now, they can tell how they paid with Bitcoin in Starbucks :-)

So they aren't really accepting Bitcoin, they are just adding a Bitcoin payment processor to their payment options.

It's time merchants started to accept Bitcoin directly.

It's not that exciting to be honest. If they don't accept Bitcoin in the way that it will allow all people to buy their coffee with Bitcoin, then it doesn't make any sense that they will go this way at all. Why would people go through the hassle of signing up at iPayYou to purchase a coffee, when they can instantly use their fiat already. Starbucks should accept Bitcoin through a mass minded payment processor such as BitPay, and not an unknown duck in the river, if you understand what I mean...

I guess that this is the start of bitcoin becoming the future money because some of the stores around the world are now accepting bitcoin as the payment on every thing that you are goin to buy. I think that they have realized that bitcoin is no joke for them. They have realized that they can earn big and have a bigger profit if they are going to accept bitcoin as a payment which is really awesome.

I'm not sure how safe is iPayU to deposit my Bitcoins into, so I would suggest people to only deposit a very small amount (an amount that could get you a coffee or something extra from Starbucks) only at the time of making the payment. Also, there's Fold Coffee (google this one out) that gives you 5% discount for spending on starbucks and it works the same way. I hope McD's and other popular fast food retail outlets start accepting Bitcoins officially.

It's a new service that opened earlier this year so It's normal that you don't know much about them. I'm sure they are legit as the team members (https://www.ipayyou.io/about.aspx)are known and their CEO was a former executive on Amazon.com .


I suppose so . The  article didn't say much and only mentioned USD but since the mobile app is the same for all countries , It's likely that It's worldwide and the deposited BTC will be exchanged to the local currency with real time rates.

I didn't get - so Starbucks already accepting bitcoin or it's just possible to be the next year only? Actually I don't care of Starbucks, because of in my place there isn't a one. But I think it's a first step to other places start to accept it too.

This is definitely a good news for bitcoin considering Starbucks is an established and mainstream company, to be able to accept bitcoin as a form of payment will surely gain a lot of mileage for bitcoin and it may eventually propel it to new heights when other established companies follow suit. I wouldn't be surprised if bitcoin's price continues to surge with this kind of development.

i cant see a massive use case for buying coffee with bitcoin anymore,  considering the fees  at the minute also,  yeah it was cool a few years ago but that fad has worn off.  I think it is important that the option is there for anyone wanting to do that but i just think that bitcoin is much more important than that now. ;)

Interesting information, and good for them, but I personally don't use Starbucks or any of the services they provide, and I think that I would rather keep it that way. I don't know if adding another service on top of the entire payment process is a good idea, but if they can make it work then whatever. It doesn't affect me, but I would like to see what comes of it.

It's good to know, though I did not see the starbuck I frequent has any signs of supporting bitcoin. Will ask the people there and will certainly try it if it is available.

Well if this is true it can be a game changer because of its unique idea in which you pay Bitcoin in their application. Not needing to fall inline to take your order and then getting the Bitcoin address your sending your payment too, instead you just pay it directly to the app. If some companies follow what Starbucks did then Bitcoin has a good future ahead of us.

its a good news for bitcoin community and we can buy coffee in starbuck and pay with bitcoin, and i am sure that in 2017, there is another cafe will follow starbucks to accepting bitcoin as the payment. but for me, i not to often to buy coffee in cafe because i like to drink coffee in my home.

I love Starbucks, especially their Via, the instant coffee.  And I love going there and getting a big mocha with shots of espresso, or a red eye.  But I won't spend a single satoshi there.  Ever.  Why would I want to part with my hard-earned, beloved bitcoin??

I don't want to spend bitcoin, and I know I'm not alone here.  Every time I go to Starbucks, I go with cash money in my pocket, and I leave them a tip with it.  Handing over (in a virtual sense) bitcoin for coffee is inconceivable to me.  Bitcoin is something to be bought, not spent.  That's my opinion, of course, and I know some people here are totally for it as a currency--I just don't get it.

this is good and its just the start of it. it will help the adoption over time and people will eventually start seeing bitcoin more as a currency rather than an investment or even seeing it as a virtual no value digital asset.

I have also heard that you can also pay to amazon via ipayyou before and now starbucks. They are pretty new service but already got good achievement which may turn out good for both bitcoin and to them in future. The team behind ipayyou seems to have good business contact to crack this deals.  ;D

if this is true then the bitcoin will become increasingly popular. we know this is very much consumer starbucks. they are definitely going to try a new method is easier in the transaction. This moment will increase the deployment of bitcoin.

starbucks has been taking bitcoin here for over a year.  it is strange in the usa, a nationwide company(not individual franchises) having differing policies in different locales.  of course, it seems that all the different payment networks take time to spread out and not just "test market" to full boat, but region to region.

Hongkong's starbucks accepts bitcoin payment according to a report and using an app called Fold app. Many companies are now considering the virtual currency as payment and a source of funds and hope that the bitcoin adoption will continue next year. 

It's interesting how fast things change, you know.. Starbucks is the biggest café in the world probably, and it accepting Bitcoin might make others interested too but I don't think we'll see much of a change unless they'll make one café ONLY for Bitcoin. I think it won't add them many new customers but it makes payment system more comfortable, but minus is that it will be better if any other wallet's user would be able to pay. This is very a good news that big merchants are already accepting bitcoin as a payment and this is indicating that bitcoin adoption is already spreading throughout the globe and hopefully it would be available in my country so that i could spend my bitcoin without the need of exchanging it to local fiat.

This is one of the best threads I have read in Christmas. I actually can't believe it, that my favorite coffee brand now accepts Bitcoins. This will save my huge coffee bills and make me even drink more coffee. Is the wallet secure though. I haven't used it so wanted to know. Any precautions we need to take and it's applicable in all outlets or selected ones for now.

Step by step bitcoin is achieving well know companies, even without we be able to spend them directly, we are able to spend our bitcoin already, something we couldnt in the past. Next year i do expect several more companies to start accept bitcoin, directly or from a third companie, and we can reach the 1000 dollars once again, im excited to see the new version of megaupload working with bitcoins.

Well this is good news. I don't go there but it is certainly a popular company and their adoption would definitely popularize Bitcoin. This is the sort of positive publicity we need after all the hacking incidents in the past. I suppose the company's rivals would follow suit as well as some other big chains there in the US.

Already been buying Frappuccino from Starbucks ever since Xapo became available for use here in our country. Not really using it directly as a payment but it still counts right? Also, this new payment method might sound iffy at first upon checking their site, but it's good to know that more and more payment processors are expanding their services for the economy.

This video is from 25.08.2015, and I think I watched some other one with 4 guys in the car. They used gift card, but for me its the same, buying coffee with bitcoins was possible even then.


Starbucks is unavailable in my country, but that doesn`t change the fact that progress of bitcoin is affecting all users. I`m happy for people who can spent some coins for the coffee and get a discount for that, I can just hope that something similar will be available in my country soon, best regards and enjoy in your coffee.

services like xapo, ipayyou, and others will make bitcoin easier to use to these things(like buying a coffe).

I think this is a huge step toward the future and a huge for bitcoin users , the problem with bitcoin users these days is that we don't find enough places  to spend directly our hard earned btc without having to exchanging it to fiat which is quit annoying and deifies the purpose of bitcoin, and i think that Starbucks using it as a payment method is a really huge progress and i hope others will do it too.

We all like to see Businesses accepting Bitcoin. But we need to see if this makes sense. In this case keep in mind that although Starbucks might not offer the cheapest coffee the fee are still comparatively high if you just want a coffee. Let us see how long they will offer this service, because if it will not work out, then they might cancel it and this would be worse for Bitcoin then not being accepted in the first place.

I think this is a great initiative from iPayYou to encourage people on using their wallet and even greater from Starbucks, and I think it is a huge step toward accepting bitcoin in the economy even more and encouraging not only people but also other big facieses to accept it as a payment method and I hope more places will start accepting it as well.

This is nice news, unfortunately we need to have a particular wallet in the service, so it seems to be some kind of third party payment system, but at least is something for those that cannot live without their morning coffee.

Starbucks has a huge customer base and is a respected brand. However in my opinion they are totally overpriced and the quality of their beverages is only average. Imho it's a ripoff. So on a very personal level I don't really care if they accept Bitcoin or not.

But for their Bitcoin acceptance being of any relevance to the Bitcoin ecosystem, they must accept Bitcoin directly, not via a 2nd or 3rd layer solution. Bitcoin was meant to do away with third parties exerting control over people's money and it has all power to achieve this. Therefore I want to see native Bitcoin acceptance before applauding.

Yes they not direct accept bitcoin. But unfortunately, this is not true in all Starbucks outlets, after I read the post here and I came across starbucks outlets closest to my city, apparently do not accept bitcoin. In addition, to be able to accept bitcoin is impractical, so I think better use the money pay as usual.

I was asking the guy in starbucks today if they accept bitcoin and the guy look at me like I was speaking foreign language, lol. Apparently they never heard that starbucks will accept bitcoin.

I think only in few countries the Starbucks shops accepting bitcoin, and i heard that some coffee cafe is taking bitcoin's in the UK but still I am not sure this news is true or false. Until it comes to our country and we do any transaction till that it's fake news only. Without valid proof, i will not trust this type of story.

Thats great to hear starbucks accepting bitcoin as payment will surely gain high reputation to bitcoin because it iliminates slow transactions of payments on cafe's and as long as you have that option of bitcoin payment, that will surely increase market of the store. Well, it's a good news that everybody in bitcoin development hoping. With more merchant which accept bitcoin as it's payment will make blockchain technology especially bitcoin as the currency get more trust to support peoples economic.

This is a good development for bitcoin users. You can now have a hot coffee from Starbucks by using bitcoin as currency. Hope 2017 other store start accepting bitcoin for payments.

This will not work and the service will either pivot into something else or close down at some point in the future. My question here is, why would I use Bitcoin to buy coffee at Starbucks when cash and my credit card works fine? In my country, a Bitcoin exchanger (coins.ph) recently launched their own virtual credit card, I plan to load my Starbucks card using that virtual credit card, if it works, then maybe I can say that Starbucks in my country accepts Bitcoin through a VCC but if its direct paying Starbucks using Bitcoin then we don't have it yet here.

It’s not like bitcoin needs the support of these big players, in fact, it would be beneficial for them too if they are adopting the new technology. When I observe the market, I see two types of merchants, those who are adopting change today and those who are not adopting change today. Ipayyou is not a popular service but with starbucks they might get into mainstream,I think this is a new service and they might incorporate many service in the future,who knows Mcdonald might be added soon or many popular fastfood and cuisine.

First of all i never heard this site before, however it's pretty cool that we can order some coffe in starbucks using bitcoin, at this point they don't accept bitcoin directly i think due to the bitcoin is not popular enough or confirmation time is extremely slow, actually we can buy some cofee in starbucks using our bitcoin debit card, i remember someone from here asked startbucks on his area do they accept bitcoin or not. how funny they don't know what it is and even never heard it before.

Unfortunately, My country does not included but it is a great news if your a coffee lover and your country is included . Starbucks technically accepts bitcoin using a third party but we necessarily need stores accepting it directly to avoid additional fees and for bitcoins adoption . Overall its a great news cause it will spread bitcoin awareness to people .

Well if that indeed is the case then with both those franchises can launch bitcoin into a new stratosphere. And with the sudden enormous rise of the price per bitcoin, it is only a matter time before the corporate big wigs there take notice and jump on it.

Hopes many stores will accept bitcoin also because it makes our money secured because you don't need to bring your pocket always because you got bitcoin and you just need to bring your phone and do shopping :D.

You have a very good point. You would have to be an avid visitor of star bucks to use another layor. If it were just a simple bitcoin wallet transaction then anyone with bitcoin would use bitcoin to pay for anything from them and probably even just visit st least once to see how it is.

There is another problem though. I really love coffee and I see no point in going to star bipucks when I can drink freshly ground beans from anywhere in the world right from the comfort of my own Nome with my own coffee machine. So really if you like coffee that much you not going to be going to Starbucks all the time so thst would mean very few people will register with them since they dont use star bucks enough to warrent it. Such big brands as Starbucks make a good commercial to bitcoin. Those people who work there see the all perspective about bitcoin in general. I think soon we will se that other brands such as McDonalds or Apple will adopt bitcoin as well.

Bitcoin was already great before companies like these came to accept the currency. Many people buy Bitcoin for the simple fact of being an efficient way of storing value... But seeing the currency being accepted by big companies like Steam, Starbucks and others will actually make Bitcoin gain more popularity around the world.

Well I think the same way, because as I can see here is that they need a third party to have payment in bitcoin, as a result of this, they will start charging extra fee for it. So from my perspective, I don't assume this case is accepting bitcoin, it's just like using your credit card for payment instead of cash.

I think yes, the manager of Starbuck had applied bitcoins for payment method, usually the rules on the company will be applied on other part of office, should it is available in Germany.
Unfortunately I am not from Germany, so I can not give the answers clearly but let us wait the answers from people of Germany.

this could be very interesting and convenient for some other people who really loves to order and drink coffee at Starbucks but the thing is that it seems that this service is only available in US so there'd be only a limited people who can use their service maybe they should also make something to be available to other countries in order to have more people to provide their service .

When it comes to a guilty pleasure most people don't care about how to get it as long as they get it, I have seen people addicted to coffee the same way you could see someone else addicted to illegal substances, people drinking 20 cups of coffee per day, shaking because they have been without caffeine for too long and stuff like that.

It would be better for you to keep all your Bitcoin savings intact because there is really no need for them to be spent to buy coffee in Starbucks of all places. Just use cash. It is a better form of payment for your daily wants and needs.

i wonder starbucks will open their shop in many places because not all country have starbucks to buy coffee and i think in my places its few starbucks store so maybe i need to wait more time to buy coffee in starbucks. but i am sure, this step will be follow by another store so people can spend their bitcoin to buy the products.

I think he is just expressing his opinion about the matter of being able to use Bitcoin through his wallet to buy a coffee. He did not specifically say that he will be using his Bitcoins to pay his coffee, he is just planning because there is a possibility of using a Virtual Credit Card to buy anything. It is like using your Bitcoin but with more uses because Credit Cards are accepted almost anywhere.

That is your opinion sir. Yet, what is the point in this is that, bitcoin is imporoving in terms of its relaiability for purchasing stuffs. Also if bitcoin would be used in Starbucks, then bitcoin would be more popular which will also give benefit for its investors and users.

I like if bitcoin will be accepted in the Starbucks. We know Starbucks is the biggest cofee company. And this is can infects with others company to accepted bitcoin.

Every major company makes a big deal about its reputation.
If starbucks accepts bitcoin, they think of it to be worthy being mentioned together with their company.

Indeed it is something a good thing, but if we can't introduce bitcoin to everyone that there is a starbuck's or customers then everything will not provide any effects or growth will be stable because it is bitcoin customers have yet to figure out properly bitcoin. you are right we don't really need to spend our bitcoins just for a coffee and it could be better to just keep our coin for savings but it's a pleasure for some people who really loves to drink coffee at Starbucks . there's nothing wrong if they want to spend their bitcoins because of some of their wants like Starbucks Coffee .

Yes I think it's a good news, hopefully they also show the bitcoin logo of the on outlets or receipt when we receive proof of payment, all of them also show step details the procedures for acceptance of the bitcoin.

any news that is about bitcoin usage for purchasing stuff with bitcoin instead of cash is a good news. but i don't think it is that big since from what i have read that application OP mentioned is implementing bitcoin, we don't have starbucks around here so i can not go and check it in person :D

There are already few services that can give you starbucks gift card for bitcoins which absolutely the same, you get a debit card that can be used at StarBucks only and you can use it to buy things from their coffee shop.

I think the title is misleading. Starbucks isnt accepting bitcoins. It is just that ipayyou is accepting bitcoins to give you starbucks GC or balance. It is completely different from Starbucks actually accepting BTC. All that has happend is that 3rd party is helping you exchange your BTC for Strbucks.

It shouldn't be making news until Starbucks decides to accept bitcoins directly.
Companies accepting bitcoins (quickly converted to fiat actually) through intermediaries are a dime a dozen.

That's good news, I like the fact that Bitcoin is spreading and that it is accepted in Starbucks, but there is no Starbucks in my town, I have not heard that there is one in the whole country. But again, that is great, I hope more and more stores come along and accept Bitcoins as a method of payment.

Right now it seems to be better to just hold our bitcoin and use cash instead thanks to the great profits afforded to us by the recent price increase but at the same time I don't see anything wrong with spending some bitcoin here and there specially with something like coffee.

yes they will. when they look at how small is the fees and also how fast and safe are the transactions they will choose it. when using bitcoin they won't have to give out their personal information and stay anonymous as far as the seller is concerned.

and also it is best for the merchants too because they will never have to worry about cash backs that has been happening all this time when people use other methods.

While it's always good that bitcoin gets this sort of exposure, it's not what we really need today. Until we get segwit and LN, we are not going to be able to deal with the amount of transactions a real mainstream exposure of "paying for coffee" tier is going to need. Also, I doubt the average joe will bother, but nonetheless it would be great if it becomes a thing. It would be cool to pay for coffees with the small extra satoshis you get in sig campaigns for example, because it's an convenient amount to have in an address and use other than leave it there setting.

That's great if all Starbucks outlet all around the world will accept bitcoin. Why? because the people to their surroundings will become curious about it, and if that happen the the surely will increase again.

This year 2017 will be good at bitcoin ? i just think so, i drinking coffee always when i go around outside of course on Starbucks and definitely it will be more often than as usual i go outside because of this great news, i can now spend more time on Starbucks because of bitcoin. I hope amazon will be accepting bitcoin also on future/someday, i think I'm not the only one thinking this? and more shop/project soon this 2017 will accept bitcoin.

Man, I hate Starbucks. Macons control it. I wouldn't spend my precious Bitcoins in some shitty Starbucks coffee. I don't even know how can anyone consider that filthy water coffee. Starbucks drink is everything but coffee, and even so it is a terribly awfull drink

But we have to put away the taste and everything else: because Starbucks is VERY popular worldwide, accepting Bitcoin as a payment method would be a pretty important step for us. I'd like to buy food and drinks anonymously, with a few taps only. If you won't spend your money on Starbucks you'll spend it on something else one day and you'll regret it maybe even more. What matters is the advertisement Starbucks would make. If there will be ads placed around mentioning that "Bitcoin is accepted here", more people will come from around the world. We need a bigger community.

I think most will try it out. See that it cost more and also wastes your precious Bitcoin, which you then have to buy new ones and pay a fee again. So i guess after 2-3 tries most people will go back to paying in fiat.

I still think that using iPayYou with Starbucks is a better way regardless of the price to show that we actually support what they did for the community.

i hope its for every branch of starbucks in every country because i see starbucks is on many country but actually i don't like to drink coffee in the starbucks because the price is really too expensive for me, i feel comfort to drink coffee in my home while i can listen music or watching television or talk with my family.

As mentioned Starbucks is truly expensive. Sometimes I've thought it might be only for the rich people, because a commonman won't wish to taste it paying such a heavy charge. Most grown countries have got starbucks shops compared to other nations. So its not a big deal for them to accept bitcoin into their business. It also helps other such big store to accept bitcoin.

Starbucks is probably expensive, but their coffee worth the bucks in my opinion.

Anyway it's not a something u should drink everyday, if you purchase it once a week, you will be probably fine with the money thing I guess.

The only good thing if Starbucks will accept Bitcoin is Bitcoin will be respected and trusted more yes, But if we are already a Bitcoin user what is the sense of going to Starbucks and pay Bitcoin when we can just pay flat money upfront. I used Bitcoin because i can transact wherever i am. But if Starbucks will implement deliveries then every morning i will avail from them using my Bitcoin.

It is indeed beneficial for the investors like me, because if people have more avenues to spend bitcoin, the circulation will increase and when the corporate houses will get hold of bitcoins, they will also start playing with it heavily which will increase its price for sure.

If this is implemented, another milestone for bitcoin industry. Accepting bitcoin in starbucks for sure many bitcoiners will surely love having coffee. No hassle to pay cash just bitcoin transfer to the teller is a big help already. Though its quite expensive but its quite interesting.

I'm really happy to hear this.  I think we need more big companies to accept bitcoin as a payment method so they set the trend and medium and small companies follow their example. But I agree that they should work much more on the design and site look. They should make it more modern and clean. In today's business world you need to adapt in order to survive!  ;)

Starbucks adopting bitcoin as a payment method may not seem a big thing for many people still it is a big thing considering how big of a name Starbucks in western countries. So for them, this is a huge step as well it encourages other big companies to start adopting  bitcoin payments, and this way before I know some big company names, bitcoin will get accepted by them in upcoming days hopefully lol.

If small coffee shops in the locality will adopt bitcoins then that is the biggest thing that can happen to bitcoin. Starbucks accepting bitcoin is a nice thing but it will not really bring a huge impact to bitcoins but if other coffee shops even the small ones then there will be a big difference. I hope small stores will also accept bitcoins then that will be the time that a one million dollar price will stick to bitcoins.

its the first step of adopting bitcoins in the  their market ,it is quite good to hear that slowly and slowly beverages companies are slowly adopting bitcoins as their currency .but i do not think that many people will show interest in it but some people will show interest in it .
