Title: Need help with Mining, 5870 heat questions.
Post by: Cyrusis on April 11, 2013, 06:38:28 AM
Hi everyone,

I'm trying to get my mining rig off the ground. I have two 5870s I'm playing around with while I wait for my 4 7950s.

I am trying to learn why my cards are reaching 80-90 degrees when I reduced the intensity to 13 on GUIMiner Scrypt? Does undervolting or clocking a card help it reduce heat? I have absolutely no idea how to go about that if it does, is this common procedure for miners? They are both currently in a computer tower. I opened up one of them and applied new artic 5 thermal paste which helped one card by about 5 degrees, screw on the other card wouldn't budge so I gave up on it.

I'm trying to minimize noise and heat as best I can.

Should I be doing anything with memory, clock or voltage?

Thank you!!

-C

Start setting the cards' memory at 300 Mhz. If that is not enough undervolt and underclock the cards, and if that is not enough try to leave your case open.

Store your computer inside of a deep-freezer. Just make sure that when you defrost nothing is running so that moisture doesn't cause errors or failures.

No really. It works. :P

Play around with lowering the core voltage, if you can. Assuming you can lower it appreciably (~0.1v or more) you'll see a noticeable drop in temps. Lowering the memory clock will help by a similar amount.

This makes no sense. you said, store it in the freezer. you mentioned about how you can't use it in the deep freezer because of the moisture, which was my first though. But then you said to defrost it before use, which completely invalidates your suggestion. Would you like to rephrase?
