Title: For me MtGox is Dead, where shoud I adquire Bitcoins?
Post by: Mae on April 11, 2013, 04:40:21 PM
I have only used MtGox but they have proven to be a very low quality service. Where should I buy now? What's the next big exchange? btc-e? bitcoin-24?

https://btc-e.com/
and
https://bitpay.com/

I think bitpay is the more popular one.

One of the main things I think about when buying are fees, and I try not to trade in amounts I would be really upset to lose e.g. Buying in $100 units, or $10 units, or 1BTC at a time. Then again, I suppose any monetary loss is unacceptable, but at least then you don't lose everything you were willing to put into BTC.

Diversify: don't depend on only one exchange, choose a few off the top of: http://bitcoincharts.com/markets/ and place some of your buy orders on each one.
Bitstamp.net seems one of the best ones also.

I guess there's also http://bitcoin-otc.com/ , although I'm not really a big fan: many people here ask the mtgox price + some percentage for some reason, while IMO it should at worst be the same price, since it has no fees... Once there was even a guy who was like begging to sell about $15 worth of BTC, and when getting into the details he asked for a fee (additional to the PayPal fee). WTF, he's the asking party yet he wants to make profit. That's how ****ed up BTC-OTC seems to me. Haven't been there in a long while though. I still like how OpenPGP-ish it is, though.

I like the idea of diversifying.

BTCe seems okay but OKPAY sucks a bit. Bitcoin24 looks cleaner, have you guys ever tried it?

Thank you!

BitMit is using Bitcoin24 for getting prices, so it must be pretty stable?

Bitfloor?  Unless you're not looking to trade in USD.

I like Bitfloor too, but (like just about every exchange) they have been having some problems. They handled it much better than MtGox though.

Like losing 25000 BTC of customers funds one day, probably never to be returned? I don't think I'd ever trade at an exchange which had such a mishap and didn't resolve it, the risk is too high that it might happen again.

They still owe serious amounts of money to users and the increase in BTC price is going to make it harder for them to repay.  Using them for trading is one thing, but I'd be extremely careful about leaving funds on an exchange which is known to be in financial trouble - not that people should be using exchanges like banks/online wallets in the first place.

I know Gox sucks but for us fools here in the US we have limited options.

I just moved some funds from my bank account to Dwolla - won't get there until mid next week.  Are they still as backlogged as last year.  Would I be able to possibly get the dwolla into Gox by maybe next Friday?

MtGox is terribly slow recently at handling BTC deposits and withdrawals. Shouldn't this be relatively quick (automated)? This should all be handled by communication between trading database <---> bitcoind. So why would this be so slow >6 hours? Also, the txid's they generated for me when withdrawing were not immediately visible on blockchain.info, which is a first.
