Title: 5 x 480 on 1000w PSU?
Post by: TR8888 on January 01, 2017, 08:59:15 AM
Will 5 x 480's be fine for all algo's on an EVGA 1000w Gold?

maybe  eth would have an issue

eewww.. cutting it close... i wouldn't.. i'm running 5 x 480 all on risers,  3930K (on corsair H55), and ssd  on win10, all at stock speeds and fans at 80% and i'm drawing 970w for eth and 940w for zcash on an EVGA 1200P2.

that looks a bit from the high side
i also got a power hungry CPU i downlocked and undervolted it and also closed a couple off cores
normally my rig was using like 130W now it uses 80W and it doesnt effect my hashing speed

If you undervolt the GPU, 1000W is not a problem.

hmmmm even 6gpu are fine in 1 kwh psu !!

in dual mine eth+lbry card consumes around 115w per card (without mod)
in monero with mod , 58w per card ,
in ethereum with mod 75w per card ,

so you wont have problems , in one of my rings ive 4x rx 480 with 750w psu , and im thinking to get the 5th one, in the same psu ,

I have 6 six RX480 4GB cards (no overclock) and EVGA1000W Platinum and no problem.

Thats looks like you just looking at gpuz readings , and that doesnt reflect actual full cards draw. Either measure at wall , or even better use Corsair i series , where you can see actual draw via Corsair link.

im using Corsair RM1000i , witch is quite cheap and reliable psu , and depends on algo , bios , miner and OC ocasionally 5 cards spike over 800w , so i wouldnt suggest you to use 750 with 5 cards.

Yes it's possible

Before I had 5 rx480 with a lepa 1000w power supply (80 bronze)

Yeah it is more than possible, it is the perfect size under most algorithms. I mainly keep my rigs to 5 GPUs for this very reason as 1000w is the ideal size before needing to go to a higher wattage and more expensive PSU.

ETH I can get by with ~700 watts as it likes higher memory but I can turn back the core clock a bit, but Monero and ZCash like a higher core which means I cannot under-volt as much, so I end up around 800-850 watts. These are measurements taken at the wall, so factoring in the PSU efficiency (say 90%) the actual wattage the PSU is delivering is closer to  750-800 watts. This puts it right around the 80% load mark which is an often recommended figure when a PSU is used for continuous (24/7) operation.

EDIT: I should have added that these measurements were all after VBIOS mods and under-volting settings were applied. A fresh rig with factory settings may exceed a 1000w PSU's capacity if you push to hard, so be careful when first setting it up. Might want to dial in your changes with just 4 cards at first and once you get your power readings down then install the 5th card.

6x480 undervolted, mining XMR pull 800w

I have 5 rx 470 (they have almost the same power usage as the 480) and they run with less than 900W from the wall.
That being sad, a good 1000W PSU should do the job without any problem
