The price of bitcoin inched upward over the course of trading today, passing $1,000 for the first time on CoinDesk Bitcoin Price Index since early January 2014.

Though the price (at press time) was still shy of a three-year high of $1,023 set in January of that year, the milestone nonetheless marks a bright beginning to 2017 for the digital currency. (Bitcoin appreciated by more than 100% in 2016).

The price had reached as high as $999 earlier in the day only to fall back to the $960s, a pattern that was similarly observed over the last week of trading as bitcoin failed to build momentum toward $1,000.

The increase notably took place during what was a day of lower-than-average trading volume, 7-day exchange data from Bitcoinity reveals.

As asserted by analysts, 2017 is expected to be a banner year, one that could finally lead the price to pass its all-time high of $1,216.7 set in 2013.

Stockmarket linkage possibly

Possibly, but it is more than likely a lot of speculators were also jumping at the opportunity and, based on the market, everyone still thinks it has a real chance to go higher and higher than it did before.

More people would be selling if they were worried, right now the market seems content sitting near the $1k mark and chances are they won't get worried anytime soon.

If the stock markets start to go up, we might see a sell-off. I don't know for sure.

I think this year was great, it starts with bitcoin prices are very high. within 2 days, bitcoin prices almost reached $ 1,000, even some who have come to the market price of $ 1,000. this time I just wanted to see whether this price will last a long time, or the holder bitcoin will drop its price, some people may be able to benefit from this.

I think the bitcoin price in February will drop because of sudden pumping of the price the next to it is dump so better to trade or convert your bitcoin now. So i will suggest that while the bitcoin is so high convert or trade it now or you will loose the pick price.

Indeed my friend it is a pretty good year. I had posted once that prices shall touch 1000$ soon and so did it. I do feel if the global uncertainty continues then it should be reaching anywhere around 1200-1500$. But that would be more clear from Jan when our president elect takes office and makes decision. It will be interesting to see what he could do. Will brexit officially happen. There so much that can take btc upwards.

It is a great news for them who bought bitcoin when it's price was under 400$.I bought 10btc when bitcoins price was under 500$ and now I am in a very good position.I think I should not be too greedy and better to convert bitcoin to fiat.Because in 2017 bitcoins price won't increase much I think.

I've been watching fiatleak.com and the HUGE movements in BTC traded at the exchanges.  So far, some 95,000 BTC have traded in 45 minutes (as of about 10:33 PM US ET).

About 93,000 was CHINA.  I noticed a trx go by of a cool BTC1000, the most I have ever seen go by "live".  That's $1,000,000...

US total was about 1200. All others were more than an order of magnitude lower.

Yeah, I know that fiatleak has its "issues" (double counting in many cases, etc.), but it's fun to watch.

A great way to start the year. We can hope for more, predictions are 2017 will bring us a new all time high.


Bitfinex moved past $1000 an hour ago, don't know which exchange the OP is quoting, but the Western onew were below $1000 at the time of his post.

It could hit $1000 before 2017, on December 31, but looks some interests make the BTC hit $1000 only now, after the holidays. I believe it's time to sell BTCs and wait the price fall again to buy more, this way it's possible to make some profit. Stay at the big whales side and you will be fine.

IT is fucking amazing. Bitcoin has hit for the first time in 2 year and I believe it will reach even higher. Bitcoin has helped me a lot and everything seems to support Bitcoin. It will hit $2000 before june

i dont believe the price would stay for long the price will drop just like before when the price skyrocket , its still possible the price will become stable at where its now.

Man, nobody know for sure.  These muthas who's so confident in they prognosticationisms, that there's prolly correlated wit' bein' wrong.  People be spoutin' off at da mouth 'bout bitcoin an' they got no idear what they talkin' about.  Me, I let the market speak fo itself, an' right now it's a screamin' BULL.  Evverbody tryin' ta milk da bull, an' y'all know how dat goes.  I thank some people is gon' end up extra crispy if y'all know what I'm sayin'.  They gon' get BURNED.

Bitcoin already has hit 1014$,and I think it will rise continuously.Now its time to think about selling the Bitcoin or keeping in your wallet.If you sell your Bitcoin now,when the price is higher,you can buy more Bitcoins if the price drops again and store more Bitcoins in your wallet.This is a possibility,to think about.But how if the Bitcoin's price will rise continuously,and will hit 1200$ in a short period of time?it is better to keep your Bitcoins in your wallet?The future will tell that...

Yes it is good for on 2017 the bitcoin's price had increased up to $1,000 but for me it is must be anticipated because bitcoin's price always can be decreasing.
So for the traders bitcoins always becareful because usually after bullish trend always becomes bearish trend and i think it is time for taking profit on 2017 and wait until the price becomes go down then buy back again.

It will take another 6 months to cross that all time highest price of bitcoins .this is the best time for selling the bitcoims otherwise it might so happen that the price of bitcoins will fall to a great extend.

2017 will be the golden or diamond year for bitcoin, I can't imagine how high we will be. Maybe 2000 USD, or 3000 USD will be All time HIGH 

Its wow! Just saw the price on preev and came here to look for the relevant topic. It is quite amazing, as I'm still in my first year in the bitcoin world, this is the highest I've seen it go, and I'm quite amazed actually. Wonderful isn't it?

Sure it's the highest point of bitcoin so far and according to this source which is coindesk's bitcoin graph (http://www.coindesk.com/price/) even the highest price bitcoin "was" ever touched in 2014 only about $979 which means we're going to make another record and brace yourself this one is going down in history. Next generation of bitcoin adoption will always talking about this.

Actually incorrect, BTC highest price was ~$1275 in Nov 2013,
so technically it has been Loser for over 3 years.  ;)

It is really nice to know that the bitcoin price right now is can be say as stable price. Though we don't know what will happen in the next day. But still I think this is the year of Bitcoin for real, cheer's!!.

How nice it is. Bitcoin is in the initial long term upward trend and will go higher when more and more people discover the bitcoin. Hope in 2017 it will go to $2000. It is the cyber gold and people will collect.

This is the second time I saw the bitcoin price reaching at 1,000$ starting from at the end of 2013.
I'm very happy because I have some more earnings from investing to bitcoins.
I expect Bitcoin maybe grow up 1,500$ in 3 months later.

I think is rise is due to speculators speculating another great year for Bitcoin and they don't want to be late to the party. So many uncertainties in world economy presently

I was surprised by the ease at which $1,000 was attained in Bitstamp. I expected a lot of resistance between the $975 and $1,000 levels. And also, the mainstream media coverage of the event was very disappointing.

possible but it may increase even more before that, i don't mind for example another increase to 2k, and then a big dump to 1200 or whatever, it would still be a success

it is a good news for all the Bitcoiners who are holding a lot of Bitcoin. We can now dream of the Bitcoin adoption since its prices are slightly increasing in past few day. Bitcoin starts its new year by hitting $1000 and there are many days ahead so I am sure that its prices will continue to pass the prices of $2000.

The price currently is 1000 dollars each and this is awesome finally bitcoin hit 1k dollars again as we hoped however there's always possibility for bitcoin to being dumped due to the people will sell their coin in order to get profit, i personally keep holding my coins at this point seems like the price will increase, i've sold some amounts when the price was 900 dollars little bit regret but it's ok since holding bitcoin is too risky.

This is wonderful achievement for bitcoin to see it back at this floor. I'm quite sure this year we will see more bigger rise up to 3k before the end of year.

What I'm thinking as well. Year ago when the stock markets were going to shit, Bitcoin fell too. Right now, major economies are prospering. US stock markets are doing great, I expected Bitcoin to do well too.

Do you really think it will be a good year as it reached the $1k mark at the start of the year? Most of the people here know that the price will go down and the people who have sold their BTC will have to wait till then. Of course it will be a great year if you have a strategy.  ;D

Second day of $1000 price and seems still stable for bitcoin but on the other hand market trading of others altcoin less valuable compare to bitcoin.
Some holders must be selling out but I won't do the same mistake twice, the dips will not coming to buy back.
Let's see how long the price could stand up at $1000, but bitcoiners believe to keep and spend when they want to, not only hoarding.

It wont happen again that bitcoins price would dip again just like what happen on the previous year when bitcoin hits $1k+ price.We see the support and resistance level of bitcoin i could say that its really hard for bitcoin to dip its price again an i strongly believe this momentum would continue even more.

The price for bitcoin hit the point of 1030$ before the new year, I think that was on 30th, but I am not sure. But after the price fall on it's previous level 900+$. And now I see again on YoBit 1018$ per coin. That is fantastic! Bitcoin doesn't stop to surprise!

i see that price too in poloniex market, its fluctuate in today as i can see the price is down and up in just one hour until three hours from now. i think the price is going to go up but we still need to be careful because this is the serious time for us to make a good profit or not with trading. so i hope we can make a profit from this.

Yeah, it's amazing though, the price of bitcoin keep raising even the new year comes. I don't know if the price will keep increase or not, but i'm sure someday it will dropped. Just make sure, you are ready for that when it comes.

It is sure a refreshing news for all of us, never thought that bitcoin could reach 1000$, but I am wrong and now I can see the sign for the price to go up is still promising, hopefully it will hold around that price, if the price keep on rising, when next year it will around 2000$ it is such a great news for early adopter

i really surprised as i was off for 2 or 3 days ago from trading
few hours ago just arrived home from vacation and see the price hit $1,000
it was beautiful gift in the early 2017
everyone happy about this situation, and you don't need to wait till next year if the market really going crazy, few months it could happened reach $2,000.

The better news is acutally not that Bitcoin price reached $1,000 again but Bitcoin reached a new all time high market cap.
Back in the end of 2013 when Bitcon first reached the $1,000 level, market cap was around $10 billions. Today it is $16 billions. Bitcoin's total value has increased by more than $5 billions.

With such an increase in market capital the year 2017 has got recorded as one among the best year in the bitcoin history. First is the milestone of $16 billion market cap. Secondly the increased price crossing $1000 after a long gap of 2year. Hope the price need to sustain till year end with gradual adoption.

For Bitcoin to reach these levels in a time when people are mostly on holiday still is BIG. Not a lot of people make investment decision over

holiday periods. You can just imagine what will happen when they get back from holiday and they see these prices.  ;) We have waited since

2014 for these prices, so let's just enjoy this time and reap the rewards for all our efforts in 2016.  ;D

Oh! But it came so, so close to hitting 1,000 in 2016, and i had a very modest bet that would have returned a bit of coins had the mark been made just 12 hours earlier.

I was in poloniex during the price surge to 1000 dollars and it was so fun. I saw a guy loss his shirt when he was trying to buy the dip, a dip that never came because the price never stopped after reaching 1000, or I think it did but so briefly that it doesn't even count as a dip. Now he's stuck with a 900 dollar buy entry order and im having serious doubts that we are going to see 900 again... if this is the next big rally, and I mean 2013 tier rally... we are not going to see 900 after the correction.
