Title: what does $1000 bitcoin price mean for altcoins?
Post by: Herbert2020 on January 02, 2017, 06:54:20 AM
bitcoin broke $1000 yesterday and it is still rising, and we can already see the effects on altcoin prices because they are all dropping and the tables all look red (-4% to -40% drop).

what do you think future holds for altcoins in both short term while bitcoin price is rising and in long term when things slow down with bitcoin and its price becomes stable again?

There's nothing new under the sun. Many altcoins' price has a certain level only because of the speculators. And everybody has seen over the time that Bitcoin rise means usually a fall of altcoins.
So the speculators, big and small, moved their assets into Bitcoin until the growth slows down. Then they'll buy altcoins again, making some rise again.
Most of this cycle is not related to breakthrough or development, neither for Bitcoin, neither for altcoins....

The Bitcoin is going to help Altcoins in general,  if you look at the market cap in Dollar value you will see that the value has gone up. Once BTC prise stabilise the profit will move to Altcoins

This explains it all. What we should be looking for and the questions we should ask are what cryptocoins are good to hold when bitcoin's price becomes stable at over 1000 dollars. Before the answer was always litecoin but not anymore.

There are a very few with steady development and even fewer with announced feature release. Some of those can be a good bet.
Then there are a few with a good speculation history that people will still buy.
Of course, the market is capricious and what the logic tells is not always what is going to happen.

i think what always happens, will happen this time too.
the majority of the altcoins will get dumped real hard and their price will go down a lot. but some of them like ethereum will go down a little because as we saw recently the manipulators have lots of money to put up walls as big as 1000BTC and prevent it.

and also another group like litecoin will rise with bitcoin price as they always did in the past.

I see Bitcoin is over 1,000$ but all altcoins have a devaluation about 10-50% .
If Bitcoin hits over 2,000$ how much the altcoins have devaluation?

I believe there is a bottom of how much the altcoins can devaluate with the BTC rise.
After that they will just keep that price independent of the BTC price as people will be waiting for a correction.

They will devalue by 40% against the bitcoin, but might still rise in fiat.

Usually the good alternative coins that have a good trading volume does give a good opportunity to earn some profit and i really have a doubt where there is a correlation between the price of bitcoin and alt coin since both are traded along side and i hope all the alt coins will benefit from these sort price spikes in bitcoin. ;)

That is how the markets usually are. Right now it is showing that Monero could be fighting for a spot in the the top 3 if its strength continues. While everyone is waiting for litecoin to rise because it is branded as the silver to bitcoin's gold, XMR is quietly proving that it can take the 3rd and maybe the 2nd spot in coinmarketcap.com. The only question is, when?

i think the big impact for altcoin is the price of altcoins itself as we can see that the price is getting down to deep and just waiting for bitcoin price is stable so the altcoins can rise again. beside that, maybe the altcoins which have not power in money will be disappear in the market.

I think only good altcoins will survive like litecoin, dash, ripple, ethereum etc but most of altcoins will have negative impact of bitcoin price increment.I think at current market price litecoin is still a good investment because most likely it will rise again to 0.008 to 0.01 before February.

It's completely common is bitcoin trading history because all other altcoins have completely depend on bitcoin so they need to take break until when the price of bitcoin will settle at one point. But really it will effect all other altcoin investors also due to rise in bitcoin price.

I do not see any vast difference in the price and the price parity wont affect  the rest of the coins ,bitcoin is gaining momentum and so does many other coins but the alt coins btc prices has being a difference but the over all status is not that bad as some things it is.Yesterday Monero had a decent rise and so does Iconomi and several other coins .It trading and you are bound to see those rise and falls.

It doesnt have any sense and not relevant to the topic too. Bitcoin can be bought even on small amounts and not necessarily to buy a whole bitcoin.Seeing on the current state of bitcoins price its indeed on high price now and altcoins price is dropping this might be the effect but it doesnt mean that their prices would remain still as bitcoin price would stabilize then thats the time for altcoins thats only for those who have potential on the market.

Well, XMR Monero is going parallel to BTC at the rise. I wonder if it will go parallel with the fall, honestly i do not think so. I believe the rise in XMR Monero is naturally driven and will make it only stronger if BTC falls  ;D ;)

well from what i have seen so far during these years these are the things that will happen whenever bitcoin price goes up

- traders take their money out of altcoin market and stop trading them to focus completely on bitcoin trading which removes resistances on altcoin price and the dumps in altcoin market (by miners and others) crashes the price.

- altcoins that are being traded with both bitcoin and USD can only keep the USD price the same, this means their price against bitcoin goes down this fall creates panic and lots of sells and crashes the price.

- there are some altcoins that act regardless of bitcoin price (a handful of them) they are either manipulated coins like ethereum which you can see whales putting up gigantic walls as big as 500-1000BTC at a time to prevent any fall. and there are also some other altcoins like litecoin that moves with bitcoin since they are similar to bitcoin and Chinese focus on these two at the same time.

Yes you right any thing can happen in trading market, without ups and down how can a trading assets will work. The only thing every one should do when ever the bitcoin price increasing people should remember one thing that is you have to buy altcoin because we can able buy more altcoin so once bitcoin price consistent than you sell them for btc.

When bitcoin goes up altcoins go down. When bitcoin goes down altcoins go down. That seems to be the trend.

Wait for bitcoin to stabilize and then altcoins will go up. But rarely to their old highs.

I suspect (some) altcoins could rise or even explode in value as Bitcoin has reached its peak for the time being; masses of traders looking for a profit could switch over to the relative cheap altcoins and thus driving the price up. I believe this also happened in the final months of 2013; after Bitcoin reached it ATH back then, most alts also rose sharply in value, sometimes up to thousands of %.

when the bitcoin is stable, altcoins are rising up.

That is my thought at the present.

i agree with this one.
because whenever bitcoin price is volatile, it doesn't matter for the traders that it is going up or going down, the volatility is the only thing they need to make profit so they go to bitcoin market to make profit and altcoin market crashes hard.
also you should remember that to all these things that we say there is always an exception.

I ve some eth, fct, zec and amp. and I purchased littlebit more altcoins while BTC is rising, altcoins decrease. I mean In fact, It was another chance for me. when BTC rise, altcoins go down. Everybody accept it. Because rising means trust for BTC. If people get more BTC "I confidence BTC I dont need altcoins". After "this huge new year" pump. and known as It will surely decarease. BUT what gonna exactly 'decrase'. 700? 600? We'll see. BTC still has huge volativity and still we cant expect what gonna happen. but I tested it. dont condence altcoins so much. I think, you should relase your altcoins after got enough profit.

Isn't this straightforward? When bitcoin is rallying, alts are taking a shit and once bitcoin settles alts will either stable out or start to rally again depending on what's going on in the project, market manipulation, etc.

When the price of bitcoin goes up a lot, altcoins will drop in the short term as people either sell to ride on bitcoin or convert to fiat for cashing out.
As the bitcoin bull market continues, people will gradually turn to alts as the price of bitcoin looks expensive compared to other coins. Then you will see huge rallies in altcoins as everyone rushes to find the next bitcoin.

What you are telling i dont understand if the bitcoin price hits 2000$ then almost all altcoins even if the coin has good value it will get selling pressure as most of then will want to convert their wealth to bitcoin so only the good worthy altcoin will be good to buy in this selling low rate time to hold for long when their is correction in bitcoin price then this altcoin will perform good.

you should read my previous comment in this topic (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1736220.msg17390582#msg17390582) to see what i mean.

you can open up a price chart once and check it against bitcoin price chart and see what is happening in different coins during each rise an fall. but rememebr to check both their altcoin/btc and altcoin/usd market.

i think people are missing the point here, you need to understand first the diference between value of the coin related to btc and intrinsic value, if bitcoin go high it's normal that all the altcoin will increase in value, but their intrinsic value will be less, i mean their value in bitcoin will be lower, because of liquidity, you can't inject all those added money in all the altcoin, it's impossible for the investors

I don't think it's actually easy to determine the price of altcoin because if you take the case of eth it was around or below 10$ for 4-6 months and now if you see the price quickly rose up to 13$+ this was just the case of eth if you see litecoin or doge from what I feel it is best to use your strategy because for now they literally seem dead to me.

Bitcoin price is at $1152 Dollars per 1 bitcoin this means that altcoins will be increase it price too where many people will be happy on what the bitcoin price at now. For me the best profitable in bitcoin is i'ts alternative coin where we can get really profit into it. And we can minimize our loses. Better to hold them till the bitcoin price hit 2000

If the price of altcoin does not increase, it is better to sell them into bitcoin.

It seems that you need to find the good altcoin and then make a lot of money.
Finding new altcoin with good potential isnt easy at all since we do all know there are lots of coins to choose from and you wont know which one would able to pump and generate you money.Theres no guarantee anytime thats why its always a risk when we do buy altcoin and now seeing on the price of bitcoin some of them turns to red and green.

Because of the high price of Bitcoin, some people are betting on altcoins to make money. The upside (in percentage terms) in Bitcoin is limited, while altcoins can move widely. So the high price of Bitcoin is actually good for altcoins as well.

There are a speculation if Bitcoin's price is rising up, altcoin price will be down and vice vers but that's just a speculation.
Well, if you're a patient person you can hold it and place an order with your own price.

The altcoins have already risen a lot. That include most of the top market cap coins such as Ethereum and Dash or Monero.

Probably because a lot of people are failing to buy bitcoins at the current price and finding altcoins a cheaper alternative to own a crypto coin... causing a limited supply of altcoins on the market and a price surge.

That is right. But the main reason is that the bitcoin future is uncertain if the block size is too small.
