Some fun info, since everyone loves to learn!

Some of the things Satoshi picked were just educated guesses,

“My choice for the number of coins and distribution schedule was an educated guess.
It was a difficult choice, because once the network is going it's locked in and we're stuck with it.
I wanted to pick something that would make prices similar to existing currencies, but without knowing the future, that's very hard.
I ended up picking something in the middle.
If Bitcoin remains a small niche, it'll be worth less per unit than existing currencies.
If you imagine it being used for some fraction of world commerce, then there's only going to be 21 million coins for the whole world, so it would be worth much more per unit.
Values are 64-bit integers with 8 decimal places, so 1 coin is represented internally as 100000000.  There's plenty of granularity if typical prices become small.
For example, if 0.001 is worth 1 Euro, then it might be easier to change where the decimal point is displayed, so if you had 1 Bitcoin it's now displayed as 1000, and 0.001 is displayed as 1”

On the initial release of Bitcoin,

In August of 2008 the domain name bitcoin.org was registered anonymously through anonymousspeech.com, which is the email SN used to communicate with others.
Around this time SN contacted others such as Adam Back and Wei Dai and Hal Finney and suggested they read a pre-release to the white paper. No copies of this pre-release (other than the abstract) are known to exist, the most likely candidate for keeping a copy was the late Hal Finney.
The abstract of this pre-release does not include the word bitcoin but instead this proposed white paper says “Electronic Cash Without a Trusted Third Party”

On October 31st, 2008 SN published the white paper on Bitcoin to a mailing list for cryptography through metzdowd.com. He later says he created the code before writing the white paper.
On November 9th the project is registered on SourceForge.net, a website used for open source software at the time. Sourceforge has since garnered a poor reputation, the Bitcoin code is currently hosted on GitHub. GitHub allows software developers to work together with ease, very helpful on open source projects.

The P2P foundation profile of him (SN) states he was in 2009 a 37 year old male who lived in Japan. By monitoring what date the age changed on his profile a birthday of April 5th 1975 was found.
On April 5th 1933 FDR signed an order outlawing US citizens from holding gold, on January 6th 1975 sales of gold in the US were made legal again.

Jan 3, 2009: The Genesis Block is mined. Satoshi would wait another 6 days until Jan 9th to release the first version of the client, 0.1, to others.

Included in the coinbase data for the Genesis block is the message, “The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks.”

The first transaction happened on the 12th between SN and Hal Finney.

In October of 2009 the first exchange rate was established based on electricity costs to run miners at the time, $1 in electricity could be used to mine roughly 1,300 btc. That is 0.000769 cents per btc.

The first update, a release to version 0.2 and the first difficulty increase happened December 30th 2009 from 1 to around 1.1829. Within the next year the difficulty would rise to over 1,000.

SN contributed to the network for around a year. His last public post was on December 12th 2010 just a day after posting, “... WikiLeaks has kicked the hornet's nest, and the swarm is headed towards us.”

I'm actually kind of surprised that we're having the 8th birthday of Bitcoin already, and to think that there have only been 2 halving so far, yet we've managed to get to this point. Really cool honestly.

I'm surprised it was launched so soon after the new year in 2009, though. I would have expected for it to launch sometime in the mid-year, and not around something like right now 8 years ago.

Also, the fact that we've managed to get to this point without the help of any centralized government or corporation is the truly revolutionary part that is going to change the world.

That's what I'm talking, we are getting stronger as evidence by the great success for this year. This year is very crucial because people are expecting we can break the all time high and will surpass it easily, we just need $200 with the present price and I think it's possible this month.

8 Years are still infancy compared to other emerging technologies, so we have done a excellent job compared to other technologies that has been around for years. We have gone to the top performing currency or should I rather say commodity for the last couple of years and a market cap bigger than Twitter. It might be a bit early, but I think the Tween years will be our best years. ^smile^

Yes happy birthday... at $1000 now hope the next 8 years will take us to $10000 per bitcoin, which is certainly possible as bitcoin is in a big ascending phase, with more people joining the party.

I didnt know the bitcoin has being around for eight long years, the times are flying by and i am getting old with the age of bitcoin. The price of bitcoin reached $1000 at the right time i guess.Hope the rally continues and if the so called experts are true then we would see further growth in the price of the coin but to be frank 8 years is a really short term for anything to get these sort of valuation and the growth it sustained is outstanding.

Bitcoin was launched JAN 3 2009

It is really 8 years to precision.

Wow a lot of time has passed and I've been here 3 years or what? Definitely I would give anything to be able to be here 5 years earlier, so that now I could be a billionaire.

Fuck too bad, now I am a poor schmuck because I joined 5 years too late. Fuck fuck fuck.

What now? Should I wait until  1 BTC goes to 1 million $?

8 years have passed and bitcoins that were considered having no future in the beginning is now a part of millions of users and mostly every newspaper has written about it and acknowledged this currency. There have been numerous amounts of bad reports as well concerning bitcoins but it stood strong and now the price itself shows how popular it is. When it fell to $200, many thought it would die soon but in a matter of 1 year, it just kept increasing and remained stable for almost all these months. I'm so glad am a part of this community and hope to see many new positive changes with regards to this currency. Happy Birthday, Bitcoin :)

Yup, indeed we should should thank the creators of the bitcoin. Because with the emergence of the bitcoin now can we get a tremendous advantage, and in the bitcoin also our lives become better than ever. Yet it also thanks all hard work of satoshi satoshi, if no then our lives will not be changed because the sure emergence of bitcoin does not exist. Unfortunately this haven't we can do to give a big thank you fit the target. Hope always triumphs and have better growth and greater

The good news is most people think it's too late to buy bitcoin now, which means we are pioneers. Once FOMO kicks in and it goes to 10k+, the people that say 1k is too late will be hating themselves for life at the realization of how they missed the boat twice, from 0 to 1k then from 1k to 10k, but these people can never learn, they are the ones that miss on all the new exciting investments.

When bitcoin was created the most optimistic supporters could not foresee its current price. On the contrary, I have the view that they would expect a greater adoption worldwide as payment system for goods or services instead of the way most of us we use it today; that is as a commodity for hoarding only. Anyway happy, 8th birthday bitcoin!

woow time passes so fast, i remember when i joined bitcoin for the first time about 3 years ago the price was dumping untill hit 200 dollars, many people lost their beliefs to bitcoin, at this point bitcoin has finally touches 1000 dollars each especially on it's birthday. Regret deeply i didn't buy much bitcoin when the price was cheap, now all that i can say congratulation for those who hold untill this point, hopefully bitcoin will touch 2000 dollars as people hoped and there will be more merchants accept bitcoin as payment method also it will get more popular.

Happy birthday Bitcoin and Mr Satoshi where ever you are, you are the reason why many of us are making a good part time income. 8 years where did the time flow, a coin available at 10 cents ignored by most and now at 1000+$ soughted by all. Ironic isn't it. Wonder if there is any person in this thread who bought it at 10 cents and has yet have few, Mr Richie rich do show up. Let's keep up the Bitcoin name always going high and only high.

You know, it seems much shorter than eight years. I guess because the mainstream still hasn't got into it. Still adoption is faster than that of the internet when it was launched, so we are on schedule.

The history that I just read of some parts about bitcoin dev in the first place.
I've never done a searched for this information and feel too much to read and load in my memory, good idea to save the articles.
Usually, new comers don't care about details history and only read the big part of whole stories to understand about it.

It’s really great to find ourselves in this amazing technology.  I am in bitcoin since 2014 and still I find myself (and even to them who joined today) early adapter because 8 years are nothing when it comes to the potential of bitcoin. It will change the way of our financial lifestyle in next few decades and hence we are extremely lucky to be inside in the first decade. Let’s be part of the revolutionary journey, let’s celebrate 0.8th version of bitcoin user base.

8 years? You are joking right? :D
It seemed like it has been half of that.
Usually as you get older time goes slower so how can it seem like half that time has passed since 2009?

It seems that bitcoin had a pretty wild birthday party, because what happened (and is still happening) in the last two days was a really crazy ride! ;D
I hope that bitcoin will get from the big hangover very soon. ;D

Anyway, thanks for sharing these information, the most I liked the fact that the first exchange rate of bitcoin in October 2009 was only a 0.000769 usd.
Comparing it to a recent value makes me smile. :)

Bitcoin was born 8 years, I followed him for a period of 3 years, it seems that the study of it is still right, I think: only in the absence of a circle of society, he will release the maximum energy. Because he will have every personal desire through consensus trust network calculation to construct a force to the center, I let you in without trust society can not get into non trust, the non was called free.
