Title: [Interest Check] Blockchain at Berkeley Coin
Post by: Eodguy149 on January 08, 2017, 09:57:40 PM
Hello everyone,

As many of you may have noticed I have not been as active around the forum and that is because I have been extremely busy with school and starting the Blockchain at Berkeley club.

If you are interested to learn more about the club you can see our website here: https://blockchain.berkeley.edu/ (https://blockchain.berkeley.edu/)

We are a student-run group at UC Berkeley dedicated to all things related to the blockchain. We host general meetings, during which we discuss recent industry, technological, economic, and bitcoin trading developments. We put on Bay Bithack every year, which was the first and largest collegiate bitcoin hackathon in the world. We develop open-source projects together as a club and contribute to the cryptocurrency ecosystem as well as collaborate with businesses to develop blockchain solutions to industry problems. We run workshops for people who are new to the industry, put on other events (like tech talks), and teach the only undergraduate cryptocurrency course in the United States.

I am creating 100 coins as gifts to give to guest speakers as well as teams and individuals who do exceptional things for the organization. The board has agreed to sell 30 of these coins to help fund the creation of the rest. Each coin will be numbered but only 20 coins are for sale as a deluxe version and an additional 10 are available without additional provenance.

Only 100 of these will ever be made and only 20 of the deluxe version that comes with a hand signed and wax sealed COA and a signed picture of the founders will ever be for sale!

The initial design for the coins is:

https://i.imgur.com/Wb3dKKV.jpg (https://i.imgur.com/Wb3dKKV.jpg)https://i.imgur.com/1NEhwlR.jpg (https://i.imgur.com/1NEhwlR.jpg)

The back will have a pit for a private key but will be sold unfunded (build your own style). Depending on interest we could possibly make custom holo stickers but might have to stick with generic ones since custom holos are expensive for such a limited production. They will be numbered on the back 1-100 and will be marked with a BTC amount, most likely 0.01BTC.

The cost of these coins will be approximately 0.1BTC and they will be sold unfunded. If there is sufficient demand we can get them done in .999 silver for the additional cost of silver spot price.

Please post or PM below in this format:

1) What number you want
2) If you would prefer .999 silver or silver plated
3) If you would prefer a generic holo at no additional cost or a custom holo (price of which will be researched if there is demand)
4) Any design suggestions

Edit to say .999 silver , custom holo, design is terrific

#4 , .999 silver, holo doesnt matter, design looks great

I like the design. You should put the lowest numbers on auction and let the market decide the price for those.

Preference: .999 silver.

Thank you! This is just an interest check thread. Once I get official quotes from a mint (I'm researching silver mints now) and begin production I will create a fair way to decide who gets what #'s if multiple people want the same coin.

If anyone has any info on a reputable silver mint please PM their info. I am looking for one that does quality work.

I believe that one of the fairest methods for distributing the lowest numbers are auctions as opposed to 'first-come-first-serve' (which is basically luck, unless one knows when the reservations will begin / thread will be made).

If anyone has any info on a reputable silver mint please PM their info. I am looking for one that does quality work.
Just please make sure to properly plan this out (e.g. generic vs. custom hologram), so we don't end up with yet another coin with an absurd 5-10x premium on spot silver.

I understand the benefits of auctions (especially for lower numbers) but I would ask that you also provide a straight buy-it-now option as well for those with short pockets. I, for one, would be much more interested in the latter, regardless of the serial number.

I will send you a PM, thanks!

Why all of you want lowest number?

Title: Re: [Interest Check] Blockchain at Berkeley Coin

Hey EOD. I would be interested in one, also happy to run a group buy for anyone EU / UK based, if that would help when the time comes

Auctions for low numbers would be better for your botom line, will also allow you to understand market value, plus break even point for the rest of the coins

Mints. I would reach out to other makers. OgNasty may be your best mainland US bet, as he has recently done a lot of activity.

North West Territory seems to be the de facto, IIRC, but there will be other options. A lot will depend on the mint run size. I am sure costs and quality will vary significantly

Do not underestimate the costs of your dies. They are more expensive for silver, but if you can do silver, do so (just higher upfront costs)

bigtimespaghetti did a book on how to make coins. It would be worth reading, if you havnt already. If you cant get the book (or ebook ?), then shout up, and I will send you mine

Also .... is this coin formally sanctioned by Berkeley ? It would make an interesting COA if it could be, and an interesting first as far as the tie up to an esteemed educational establishment

Best of luck getting this over the line

Interesting idea, curious to see how it develops.

I also think auction for the first 10/20 would be best.

Thank you for all of the info! Depending on how sales go a group buy may be the best way to go, I appreciate the offer!

NWT is one of the first mints I contacted for a quote actually. Purchasing bigtimespaghetti's book was one of my first transactions on the forum :)

The coin is formally sanctioned by Blockchain at Berkeley and we are a formally sanctioned organization on campus. The organization is comprised entirely of students at UC Berkeley (almost 100 students currently) and our club teaches a course that can be taken for credits toward a degree. A link to the Cryptocurrency course can be seen here (link is from last semester, Spring semester is not populated yet): http://www.decal.org/courses/4132 (http://www.decal.org/courses/4132)

If there is interest we could create a COA that is signed by the founding members of the club? Not sure what would be of most interest but I am definitely open to ideas. We have a lot of ties on campus so I'll try to brainstorm something interesting but please feel free to offer suggestions or ask any questions about the organization that you may have.  :)

Figured you would have, always worth a check though.

If you could get a COA that's formally issued by Berkley, that would be cool.... but probably a big ask

I'm thinking old school looking. Coats of arms /  red wax seal,  and signed by one of the Deans or something. Contrast the new of the coin / currency with the history of the establishment

#7 please.

I don't have any preference for the metal. Anything would do for me. Same is the case for the holograms. I'm okay with anything, except the number. I would only prefer #7.

It's definitely on the back burner but right now school and Blockchain at Berkeley are the priority. I tested it with generic holos and different wire/thread and wasn't very happy with the results. It's a complex mechanism for redemption that I want to get right before moving forward. Thanks again for sending me your test coin  ;D

If you could pull this off properly, that would be amazing. I think that could make this coin rather unique as it has never been done before (CoA signed by e.g. Deans). I'm most certain that most of the collectors are in favor of a CoA. Are you sure you want only 20 coins sold here? You may want to create an list of interested people.

It looks like the others don't realize that they should not be reserving numbers any numbers yet.

Thank you for the support! It's looking like we will be able to have one of these displayed in the glass case in the computer science building. It will be pretty cool seeing a piece of crypto history displayed for all to see on campus!

We have decided to go with Northwest Territorial Mint. It isn't the cheapest option but I believe it is by far the best for the price. They are known for exceptional quality which only seems right for this exceptional coin.

I will keep you all posted on progress made. Thank you all for your interest. I will worry about properly distributing these to interested buyers once they are complete. Right now I'm focusing on making sure these coins are perfect.

If you read the original post it asks what numbers people would want. Yes it is just an interest check but everyone so far has been putting in the kind of information that eod asked for. To be honest yourself and 1 or 2 others are the only ones spouting off auctions/blockchain draw/sell more than 20.

Edit-- reading over this it sounds sort of dickish but he asked about his coin and not about distribution. Everyone that has commented a number has just been showing interest for how nice this coin is and has been following suit as "next lowest" or just their lucky/favorite number <20

Is there any preference on diameter or depth for the pit on the back of the coin for the private key? I'm trying to see if there's a standard size and I've found a few different diameters as well as depths.

Damn that looks crazy good. Definitely interested in this.

I'd think if you made 100 or so, kept the first 10 numbers for auction and went from there it would be great. I'll get in line for one of these for sure. Any idea after talking to NTM about what price may end up at?

I'm not totally sure. A lot of it depends on how much the custom holograms are and how much work it is to get the COA done correctly. I will keep you all posted when we settle on a final price!

To be clear please don't get too hung up on what number MJ puts you as. We might have to auction all 20 of them depending on the price and interest.

The way I read the OP is that you were asking of what number of mintage we'd like. And not for us to reserve what # we'd actually like in case these will get made. Am I wrong in that regard?

EDIT: After carefully reading it over again, since I did not do that the last time apparently, I am completely wrong with the statement I made above.

I'm by no means a photographer but here are a few pictures I took around campus!

I should have the holos and the hand signed COA's by then as well (they will also come with the COA's from the mint). I will either be using old looking paper with a custom wax UC Berkeley seal or putting them on scrolls, feel free to let me know which you think would be the cooler option!

I will post an updated list of reservations and final pricing structure by tonight.  ;D

Looks fantastic! Well done! Can't wait to see one up close (assuming my reservation stands - look forward to seeing the finalized list).

Scrolls? Anything on a scroll is more legit. But paper w/custom wax seal sounds cool too.

Did you have that updated list? :)

The organization is keeping #1 and #10 for display and historical purposes and will be displaying a coin on campus in the glass case in Soda Hall. Please let me know if you see any issues with this list. I think that it is current with the order that people reserved them and shifted correctly for the ones that the club is reserving. Please post or PM me and the individual on a particular number if you want a specific number other than the one you are currently on and I will try to accommodate everyone.

The first 20 coins (#1-20 excluding club reserved coins) will come with a certificate of authenticity signed by the head of the SCET (http://scet.berkeley.edu/ikhlaq-sidhu/ (http://scet.berkeley.edu/ikhlaq-sidhu/)) that will be on a scroll or old looking paper with a UC Berkeley wax seal, a COA from the NWT mint, and a picture signed by all the founding members of the organization. #21-30 will just come with the COA from the mint. All coins will be sent in a plastic protective case as seen in the above pictures taken on campus. Shipping is free for anyone in the US and will be negotiated depending on location for international.

Pricing:
#1-20: 0.2BTC
#21-30: 0.12BTC

I will not be collecting any payments until I have the COA complete as well as the holos in hand and everything ready to ship the same day that payment is received.

Yeah if you'd like to use any of the usual ones that's perfectly fine with me. Escrow fee provided by the buyer. Otherwise I personally will be storing all payments on a Trezor and then transferring them to pay back the org once the coin arrives safe and sound.

I think the most important thing to consider (and the reason for the price) is that it is a fundraiser for a Berkeley student Bitcoin organization. A great cause indeed!

I didn't really think about it since I am acting as an escrow for the org and have acted as an escrow for a few high value transactions in the past here. Totally understandable though and I'd be more than happy to help you set something up and arrange something with Blazed or OG for anyone else.

I provided more slots for the less expensive version without all the additional swag. I don't feel that it is too out of line with other coins that are this limited in production and distribution and I haven't seen any other coin that I think is this unique.

Exactly! And we are a non profit registered under the ASUC so it would count as a donation and be tax deductible if you are in the US! We have tons of plans to open source all of our workshops and classes to help move this exciting technology forward. You can see some of our content here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5sgoRfoSp3jeX4DEqKLwKg (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5sgoRfoSp3jeX4DEqKLwKg) The other coins will be handed out to students who do truly exceptional projects as well as speakers such as Consensys and IPFS who will be coming to give talks in the next month.

Alright everyone! I finally have time to start getting these shipped.

Please send payment to: 172LKx4hzEuLjBAgpHYxCB6eShuwcghAxL

I have lowered the price to 0.11BTC due to the increase in BTC price.

Shipping is included in this price, if you are international please add $10 to that total.

Then PM me your txid and address and I will get the coin shipped out.

All funds will be stored on a Trezor until the buyer confirms that the coin has arrived safe and sound.

Please only send 0.11BTC regardless of if you have the deluxe edition with COA or not. I have done some testing and it will be easier to ship the COA separately from the coin since the coin will most likely damage the wax seal during the shipping process. I will collect payment for the COA and other provenance in a few days.

Just to make everything clear.

You are charging 0.11BTC for each coin, regardless of number, correct?

You stated that you will collect payment for the CoA in a few days, how much will that land on? I was under the impression the 0.11BTC included the CoA since you also stated that regardless of people getting it or not the cost would be 0.11BTC.

Thanks,

Hey Eodguy149 :)

I received a message from you with a link to your post, asking for payment. I never actually reserved a coin, though it appears that someone (MJ :) ) reserved one (#11) on my behalf. (Thanks MJ!!)

If the final price is indeed 0.11 BTC, I am happy to take this coin. If the actual cost is more (0.2 BTC ??) then I will have to cancel, and allow someone else (MJ gets first dibs since he reserved it for me) to take the coin. Please clarify the final costs of these coins, as this sentence: "I will collect payment for the COA and other provenance in a few days." has me slightly confused.

Many thanks.

Isn't money very influential?
I will keep you all posted on progress made. Thank you all for your interest. I will worry about properly distributing these to interested buyers once they are complete. Right now I'm focusing on making sure these coins are perfect.
The current distribution does have a single benefit, i.e. it is 1 coin per person username. However, not only can this easily be abused should the need arise, it has turned into another 'first-come-first-serve' scheme which has nothing to do with proper distribution. Moving on to:

Pricing:
#1-20: 0.2BTC
#21-30: 0.12BTC
0.2 BTC for 1 oz of silver? This is yet another example of nonsensical pricing within the abusive market of crypto-coin collecting. I have no idea why we are bothering with these low rates. Why not start at 0.5BTC?::)

My understanding is that the cost is 0.11 including shipping for coin (for those in US, international add $10).

The COA needs to be shipped separately and while the cost is included in the 0.11 for those with reservations 1-20, the only extra cost will be the shipping. Which would be an additional $5-10. No biggie!

Lauda and everyone remember this is a student run educational group!! This is not a Crypto coin manufacturer etc etc. All the profits generated from this will go to a good cause!! It is hard to find a comparable coin like this.

Sorry for the confusion! The 0.11BTC will be for the coin and the COA from the mint only. #1-20 will have the option to send an additional 0.08BTC to receive a hand signed COA on old paper with a wax seal and a picture of the Blockchain at Berkeley founders signed by all of us. I will call this the deluxe version for simplicity. If any individuals from the first 20 coins do not want the deluxe version they can get just the coin as other people with later reservations have been asking if they can get the deluxe version. No more than 20 people total will receive the deluxe version and I will ask down the line of reservations if any of the first 20 decide to not get the deluxe version and post recipients publicly for transparency.

Has the amount that will be sold changed??

Seems like there are 28 coins being sold per your list.

That is correct. I changed the amount being sold on February 27th, the post can be seen on page four of this thread. I asked if anyone had any problems with the list change. I will update the OP to reflect that.

The issue I ran into was the fact that people had PM'd me requesting a coin at almost the same time as some individuals posted and with the club reserving two coins for display some individuals would have been bumped off the list of getting a coin and it made sense to slightly extend the list. Only the first 20 coins will come with a hand signed and wax sealed COA and a signed picture of the founders, that number has not changed. Only 20 of these deluxe version coins will be in existence, the total number of 100 minted coins has not changed either.

I believe he's selling his whole physical coin collection in another thread.  If he hasn't paid yet I don't think he'll be picking it up but Eod will have to confirm with him.

PM'd  ;D

Just to tack on another question - Any updates/ETA on the COA?

They are slightly delayed. The individual who is signing them had an impromptu trip to Hong Kong...  :(

He is extremely busy and hard to schedule a meeting with hence why I wanted to delay payments until they were in hand. I will keep you all posted and let you know as soon as they are done.

Putting it on straight will require skill and patience but a few tips that have made that easier for me are below.  These tips were used while creating my coin above:

 - Use a line of masking tape to pick up the hologram off the wax backing and place it on the coin starting at the furthest point from the masking tape.

 - Dust free environment helps from trapping stuff under the sticker during the assembly process and gently roll any "bubbles" out after placement.

 - After full hologram placement remove the masking tape carefully or else you could cause a "VOID" mark where the masking tape was removed.

 - Don't press down too hard on the center when sealing the hologram / rolling out any "bubbles" or the private key depression will show through the hologram.

Hopefully that helps and I'd recommend practicing on DIY coins if possible.  :)

You will get it Saturday or Monday at the latest. Sorry for the delay in shipping, there was a misunderstanding with my gf who is shipping them since I told her to wait until payment was received but forgot to tell her when you sent it. Correct, this semester might be the death of me.

Yeah sure I can do that - Here is what I asked (in condensed form):
-Will you be able to fulfill these orders soon?
-Will price @ 0.08 remain the same due to the BTC price increase?
-If not, Will the pre-orders be refunded or will no refund be issued to those that pre-ordered since the price was lower at the time of sale?

Hello all. It's been a busy summer. Working full time on projects for a few major companies, also officially collaborating with IOTA. If you haven't checked them out you should!

Major reason for the delay is that the COA signer has been out of the country for a few months now and keeps extending. I hope to try and get these signed if he comes back over summer or when the fall semester starts at the end of August. This possible delay was the major reason why I asked that people not send payment for the COA's until I had them complete but some did anyway.

If you already paid for the COA and you would like me to send the 0.08BTC back please PM me your address. I plan to set the price at $100 (this includes shipping anywhere in the US, it will be slightly more internationally) whenever they ship. Those that have already paid will be refunded whatever the different is between 0.08BTC and $100 when I ship the COA if you choose to not get a full refund before then. Thank you for your patience!

Awesome! Thanks for the update and very cool to hear that you have some sweet projects on your plate! I sent you a PM with my address requesting the full refund - although I definitely will still be interested in the COA come fall, but I'll just pay again when the time comes. Thank you sir!

Sorry to hear about the delays but it is understandable.

As for the choices for those who already paid - seems like you are taking a very sensible approach to it and I'm certain that most of the collectors will appreciate it!

Can't wait to see the update regarding the CoA's.

Some video guides would definitely be awesome! I've been putting some DiY coins aside due to the fact that I'm worried about making a mistake. Would suck to do so when most sellers just send one extra or so, I'm not sure I'd be able to nail my first one in two tries. So please, do make these videos and add a donation address :)
