It's not necessarily a DDoS attack whenever a website is down. With the recent upsurge in interest for Bitcoin, some websites were just caught unprepared for these levels of legitimate(!) traffic, that's all.

As a site admin, ive been confronted to DDOS and I can assure you it is a DDOS attack. All these different site coming down same time is common to this type of attack.

If Prolexic can't block them, who can! They are supposed to be one of the biggest specialized firm to prevent such attacks.
Until GOX invest BIG in its own hardware protection, which will take at least 2 weeks, just Sit and watch the drama unfold.I can only see more panick and more diving with those more recurrent attacks.

It's a DDoS alright. No doubt about it.

I'm sorry, are you the owner of any of those websites, that you're so sure about what is or isn't happening with them?

More Pastebin nonsense that doesn't mean anything about what's really happening.

Yeah, this is the Speculation sub after all. Just posted what I saw on the BFL shoutbox earlier while they were discussing conspiracy theories.

There's no ddos, it's a panic sell, it's crashed. The servers are slow because everyone is trying to get out.
I mean - how deep in denial can you be?

It is a panic sell, but ddos is not totally out of the picture.

I was talking about bitcoincharts.com and other tracking-only websites. There's little reason to DDoS those, as people can find the information they need at the primary source anyway. They're probably just overwhelmed with legitimate requests.

Bit floor has a notice on their site about an ongoing DDOS. It is for real folks.

Blocking a DDoS == Pissing in the wind..

No matter how big a pipe you have or how big a black hole your provider(s) have, the DDoSers will always be able to knock you around.

Blocking this information is perfect way to induce panic

Well, there are people who are in complete denial that DDoSs are happening, and there are people in complete denial that there are factors other than DDoS at play. I think both groups of people are equally stupid  ;D ;D ;D

The only SERIOUS lag I saw was in the 40 minutes or so after MtGox came back up. After that its's been very smooth excepting the odd period of 10 or 20 second lag.

So, no DDoS today.

Yet.

Why bother? Most of their job is done.

Maybe they think because they run Windows 95 they don't have DDOS anymore.  :D

I've been swing trading all night. There's intermittent downtime, and intermittent extremely long delays that dont really count as "downtime" that've registered on my trading program. It's not a panic sell, it's a comfy, gentle back-and-forth sea. I have no doubt they're being DDoSed.

This secondary information would already be blocked by ddosing the primary sources only. Why waste resources by attacking bitcoincharts directly?
Perhaps owner can clarify what is going on for fact...?

I use bitcoincharts info to pull bid/ask information into an excel spreadsheet and I can tell you that they are severely struggling to keep that site up.  Whether it's legitimate server overload or DDoS I'm unsure about, but they are down EVERY time we have one these bitcoin infrastructure freezups and multiple times in between.

Why DDoS the mining pools also??

it might just be the volume of trades. before this whole bitcoin value increase it was a volume from 20k-120k. Right now it is saying the volume is at 433k.
