Right it is one one the greatest, fastest, secured and highly valued cryptocurrencies ever, but aside from making a profit by depositing it, can it be used to buy stuff you need? What kind of places accept BTC as payment? Does it mean if you've got bitcoins in your wallet you can survive without fiat in your pocket?

This is a damn good question, and I've seen similar threads pop up from time to time asking the same thing. 

The only thing I've ever bought (aside from other cryptocurrency) is a bunch of silver coins from Provident Metals.  I have never seen a local merchant accepting bitcoin, and honestly I don't see any reason to spend it.  Why buy something with bitcoin when I can do it so much easier with fiat--and there's buyer protection, usually. 

I did get a discount at Provident, which was nice.  Other than that I find fiat much better for spending.  Still love bitcoin as an investment, though.

Nope I'm not from UK but will be moving to Sweden in 2 years and I have began investing on BTC atm, but I wanna be sure that I am investing on sth that is both a profitable Investment and a logical and essential currency that I can use to buy anything I desire (at least be supported by many places) If not, there are many ways of investment why should I choose BTC over them all? What can't I buy with fiat that I can with BTC?

 One of the few things I will spend my Bitcoin on (though I usually replace them shortly thereafter) is for recharging my phone service.  There is a service called Bitrefill (https://www.bitrefill.com) that allows you to top up your phone quickly with Bitcoins.  You could probably load up anyone's phone as long as you know their phone number and it is fast.  I have no affiliation with Bitrefill at all, I just love the service.  This way I don't have to leave a credit card on file with the phone company which gives me one less thing to worry about.

I think it is already possible to buy games through the steam service. There are people who can also recharge the cell phone and even pay bills with it.
It will take a long time for sites like amazon to start adopting the currency, but I think it will happen someday.

Well compared to the cosy of one BTC and what its really worth, charging a phone is a small thing. I mean can't you do it with fiat?

So what you say is that there's not enough sources that one can spend his BTC on. Phones and bills can also easily be paid by Fiat. Correct me if i'm wrong

 I can get BTC any time with PayPal but in order to charge my phone with fiat, it entails leaving the house and finding a place that sells top-up vouchers for my provider.  There are none on my way to work so Bitcoin is much, much easier and faster plus I can do it 24/7 so I'm not constrained by retail store hours.  That's important for a shift worker and I'm saving the planet by not using more gas to drive to the store ;)

 I haven't really kept track but I would imagine I do this every couple of months.  Occasionally I use a voucher that my wife has purchased since I can't get her onto the Bitcoin bandwagon.

With Bitcoin, you can deposit to Online Casinos quickly and receive withdrawals on the same day. With real money casinos, it takes weeks to receive a check, and your bank may or may not deposit the funds (if they suspect fraudulent activity).

 Less than $5 worth (in 2011) bought you a computer in 2016?!  That's awesome.  When I first looked into Bitcoin, it was worth around $50 each and I wasted time and money with BFL trying to buy and have a couple of their miners delivered.  I wish I had simply bought the coin at the time and sat on it.  

 I know that dell accepts Bitcoin and I think they take care to do a nice build but I'm I feel I can build a more powerful machine for less money.  

 This is slightly tangential but I am also reminded that Air Lot (the Polish international airline) accepts Bitcoin too.  Last year we flew to Europe and I was tempted to use Air Lot but the departure and arrival schedules in Romania didn't meet with our liking.

 I've been at it for a while and have used Bitcoin for a few things - coffee beans, necklaces, IPTV service, VPN service, gift cards and even a few sheets of virtually indestructible paper called Revlar.  Coincards.ca (https://coincards.ca/) is a great place for gift cards.  If you wanted to cash out some coin without going through an exchange and had something in mind you wanted to buy, they probably have a gift card for it (virtual and physical cards).

You can buy nearly everything with Bitcoin, you just have to know what websites are effective to use and where you can find people willing to sell you stuff for Bitcoin. There have been mines sold for Bitcoin, there have been houses and cars sold for Bitcoin, you can buy MtG cards for Bitcoin, you can buy groceries, there's a ton of things you can do.

There is a wide variety of places on the internet, but in physical locations it is a bit difficult to find. Depending on the country, this becomes more complicated, because in some countries there are not many websites accepting the currency, but this is something that can be understood, because the ecosystem is still developing, and that takes time.

I buy everything with bitcoin, from books to furniture (overstock.com), and services (internet, VPS, etc). Now it's really easy to use bitcoins, hope more and more services will support it.

I could have bought a lot of stuff with bitcoin. it's been a lot of stores that accept bitcoin. mostly online store. but the development of offline stores also are on the rise.

Because you're living in the real environment and not in the digital environment like Digimon. Although if you can doing a complex transaction using bitcoin and you will still need fiat and the average communities don't familiar with it.

Right now digital goods can be bought easily with bitcoin than other things. Slowly several other services have been getting added with bitcoin acceptance. If expected service is not available then can find a trader to convert to fiat to use for our particular need.

Most of the people in most countries has this problem. They do not have local Support of bitcoin or bitcoin not accepted in local shops. The only option left with them is to convert their coins in local currency and then buy products.

Yeah pretty much. You don't even have to use a website that accepts Bitcoin. You could just use a Bitcoin debit card which is linked to paypal. Pretty much all websites accept paypal. There really is no limit on what you can buy with Bitcoin.

I have just recharged my mobile using bitcoins.I hope it will take long time for shopkeepers to accept bitcoins.Microsoft has announced that it will release excel for calculating bitcoins also. We can hope microsoft would soon accept bitcoin as payment.Other than that, now i can buy altcoins, digital goods from bitcoin forum.

You would able to survive if you have bitcoin without fiat in your pocket but still depends on the adoption of bitcoin on your place since you do have bitcoin you could able to buy stuffs like grocery and paying bills but we all know its just available on some parts of the world and adoption is not that high.

Where do you think fiat(paper money, governments money) came from? people needed to have something with value which they could carry around easily and every one agrees on their value so they made the money as we know it today, if people aren't carrying gold bars or coins around to trade and buy stuff doesn't mean gold is useless or ask why do we need it and use it? people always want the easy way and they tend to get what they want anyways which would be converting bitcoins to fiat since it's widely available and every single person selling anything accept it without blinking :).

Right now, there are a lot of things that can be bought with bitcoin. In our country, we can use bitcoin to recharge our mobile numbers. There are also online shop where you can buy gadgets like laptops, cellular phones and many more using bitcoin. We can also use it to pay for our utility bills.

There are now schools accepting bitcoins if you do not know, it was even posted here in this forum. There are two schools that actually accepts bitcoin right now in Europe and also there are many groups who does charity works are accepting bitcoins. Starbucks, one of the best and quality coffee shops in the world are now accepting bitcoins as payment. In social media there are many merchants that sells items in exchange for bitcoins, there are lots of page in facebook you just need to search for them.

Well there are plenty of stuff that you can buy with bitcoin but I think you should convert it in fiat first,
but in coins.ph you can reload your mobile phone through bitcoin and you can pay your water and electric bills,
but if you want to buy with this you can do it in the dark net i'm pretty sure that they would accept it,

No bitcoins for me is not currency, it is like gold for me.
Bitcoin be used for trading altcoins on poloniex or other markets and i don't buy something (Sth phisical) on local stores because there are no local stores that accept bitcoins, except online shopping using  https://purse.io that accept bitcoins for payment.

I've bought a TV and some high-end watches from www.overstock.com - they accept Bitcoin payments directly. I am not sure if they deliver outside the US, though.

the thing to always know about bitcoin is that bitcoin is money. so as long as it has value and it is being traded with fiat you can buy anything you want with it, but as long as you can find someone who is willing to accept bitcoin as payment. it is like asking what i can buy with USD, if someone is accepting USD you can buy anything.

For me It's always interesting to buy anything with today's well known internet cryptocurrency called Bitcoin.Very fast when I was debuted on bitcoin industry I'm usually use bitcoin to top up my personal phone numbers.At beggining lacking of knowledge with our country limitation didn't got benefit from bitcoin like online shopping etc.Now a days I have planned bought VPN/VPS,Domain hosting for a personal website with Bitcoin.

Well, now I can finally say that I can purchase coffee and other drinks from a nearby coffee shop in my place, which accepts bitcoin. And amazingly, the drinks are freaking cool and delicious ;D But the sad thing is that those drinks are the only things that I can buy with bitcoin directly in my country. That's amazing :D You must have been living in those areas that don't hate bitcoin like my place. I can't do anything except buying coffee and smoothies with bitcoin and it took me years to find a coffee shop that accepts bitcoin. Actualy I can buy anything because I have bitcoin debit card and that makes everything lot more easier. I buy groceries, clothes, pay bills, buy stuff online. Unfortunately in my local community there are no many merchants who accept bitcoin directly so debit card is solution.

In my country we usally save our bitcoin to wallet such as coin.ph and we convert it into peso so that we can use it to load,paybills or buy things. You can buy many applications with bitcoins, I bought netflix for example. You can buy games on steam, I bought two already. This is are things I bought for now, I tried to buy I phone here from one member but he scammed me. I think many people here buy gift cards and then they purchase something on amazon, ebay, but I still didn`t test that.
There is threads about people who bought houses, cars and other expensive things with bitcoins, it`s possible if you have a lot of bitcoins. With trusted people here and only with using escrow you can order what ever you wish and pay with bitcoins.

Even here, I use only to buy load our mobile numbers and send money to somewhere to my relatives, and pay utility bills but I am not much on buying gadget using bitcoin though they have less fee on using this method because of the security of my item to be purchased.

in our are we also cannot use bitcoin directly for shopping. because our local shopkeepers do not accept bitcoin for shopping. therefore we also mostly use bitcoin for trading and investment. and then indirectly use it for shopping.

It is still too early to use Bitcoin as a form of payment directed to micropayments. There are both economic and technical factors that make this difficult. One of the economic factors is the fact that the volatility is very high, and yet there are not many merchants willing to adopt the currency. As technical factors, one is the fact that problems related to scalability still need to be solved.

Still, I can not buy anything with using bitcoin in my country in the market. I am using bitcoin for just investment now.  But the awareness is increasing day by day. For now, there are websites where you can buy or sell bitcoin. and I am sure bitcoin markets are not too far.

I think it's possible to buy with bitcoin whatever. Of course  not every place accept bitcoin as payment, but it's possible to cash out bitcoins and buy a thing you want. Just the question is in how many bitcoins do you have.

Its a good question and I think you are right. Bitcoin is not very popular with local merchants. Barely any people accept it, but we need to spread the word about it.

However, I do use Bitcoin to buy some online digital hardware.

How to spend bitcoin depend on where you live of course.
However, in my city there is no any merchant that accept bitcoin.
I could buy some stuff through online stores, such as electronic, clothes or mobile phone.
But none of those stores are near from here.

Well there are stores now that is accepting bitcoin. And really the accepting of bitcoin is one of the advantages of it. There are limited placea that will accept your bitcoin. Thats why many bitcoin users must really have to change their bitcoins to fiat.

based on where you live it you can survive with only bitcoin in your pocket, in other words you can buy everything in some countries and in some others nothing with bitcoin.
for instance in many developed countries you may even be able to convince any shop owner to accept bitcoin. but in under developed countries if you talk to them about bitcoin they will laugh at you!

From my experiences as a bitcoin user.
I can pay my bills uaing my bitcoin, still there are only few who accept them and sometimes they are still confused.
But buyung from it, it is really something that is used by some bitcoin user, in my case i can buy loads through it, but still not equipments like shirts.

By now, there are a lot of it already. From my experience, I bought Steam games with Bitcoins using G2A. I also read that some VPNs offer bitcoin as payment methods. Maybe there would be a time in the near future that 90% of the internet will accept bitcoins. Maybe online stores such as amazon will accept it in the future.

I believe there absolutely any thing you cannot buy with bitcoin these days, even if the major stores will not accept directly, when one looks very well, there are still some middlemen merchants that will be ready to make it happen. But for me, I don't think I can buy something online now which I can even pay with fiat not to talk of bitcoin that I wont get to see a merchant in the country simply because of bad experiences my friend had by ordering only to receive something else.

It's quite hard to trust middle men though than just like directly ordering from the service itself. That would also cause some unecessary hassle and added cost to both the buyer and the merchant. Regards online shops, I did had that experience too, buying something and getting something else in the mail. But it depends on the store you buy it from, you can always return it and have it exchanged, because you didn't get the product you want.

Right now, in my country, I can buy mostly only digital staff over Internet.
As I know, only a few offline shops accept Bitco0iun for payment and we have only 2 bitcoin ATM in the country.
Because of this, and some other reasons, I mostly keep my bitcoin funds in the wallet.

It would be nice if we could use it to directly pay for anything we need in the physical world, though. Maybe enabling bitcoin to be used in the physical world would be the next frontier of bitcoins and when it happens I would be happy, as I can pay anything I need without converting my bitcoin to my currency.

In third world countries, you can buy all the digital goods with Bitcoin. But in First world countries like the USA, you can buy anything. There are many companies and countries still need to understand the value of Bitcoin.

For me I'm not limited in any way with regards to my usage of bitcoins. I'm able to purchase almost anything (be cameras, smart phones, smart watches, clothes, home decors, RC toys among others) by going through third parties like shopawl.com which is a drop-shipper of banggood.com. You can buy whatever from aliexpress or banggood through shopawl which will act as the mediator and buy them( products) on your behalf and you pay them bitcoin for it.

As of now there are a very limited number of business that accepts bitcoin and its mostly online and via third parties . Let me give you some example like you can use purse.io when shopping through amazon . You should search in google to find the other ones . There are services that offer debit cards that use bitcoin and not fiat, so realistically you should be able to buy anything with bitcoin if you use said service.

If many places, stores etc accept btc yes you can live without fiat money. Many times I have used my credit card which I have my btc and it worked perfect for me.

Cryptocurrency like bitcoin have many uses . It depends to the company if they are willing to take btc as a payment . For now buisness like starbucks are open for btc transaction. But if you want to spend btc more convert it , like in my country we convert using coin.ph and we can use it to buy thing,pay bills,load and etc. :)

There many payment processors thst accept bitcoin so there is that. Also many shops online thst are local let you pay with bitcoin. There is more and more places each time I'm online and even the bigger places sre doing it. There sites locally simikiar to amazon and such thst allow bitcoin payment and deliver to you as well. Yes true, for the time being, anything we can buy with bitcoin, I ever find a complete online shopping site that offers items from fashion, electronics, computers, payment of utility bills, toll and needs every day which can accept bitcoin.

but the problem is that in most area, such store are not available, may be present in places but not in a good number, as i heard from a friend that such kind of stores are available in Brazil in good number but in rest of places i do not think that there are enough store, like in my area there is only one shop that accept bitcoin and that is also about 150 kilometer away from my home. so its difficult to reach there on daily basis for shopping.

Well there are some online markets that accept bitcoin for payment with a little google search  think you can find one or you can exchange your bitcoins to real money instead to buy whatever you need :)

Now still bitcoin is not achieve everything. So don't think that if you have bitcoin in your wallet than you could buy everything with it. Now change your thinking, I want to tell if you have bitcoin for investment wise, than definitely it give you good profit, and may be in future you think why not you are buy a lot of bitcoin with your fiat money.
But it is right we couldn't buy everything with bitcoin, so should keep fiat in your pocket.

So far I never experience it yet to eat in a fine dining restaurant even in the coffee shop like starbucks where I'm going to pay my order via Bitcoin. But we had already here that accepted bitcoin. also I'm using it to pay my billings every month.

Not enogh things you can buy and thats why it is not used mor. But it will soon.

very honestly in my area i can use bitcoin for recharging my mobile. i have heard that in USA there are so many store where you can use bitcoin just like fiat and can buy any thing with it without changing it in fiat currency. to me whenever i feel the need for money i convert my bitcoins first to fiat and after that i use it for completing my needs.

I have used Newegg.com and Purse.io.  Purse.io you can buy anything on Amazon.  So far it has worked well for me.

there is no doubt that we can buy a lot of things using bitcoin online as most of the online stores accept bitcoin, but  when we speak speak about use of bitcoin in or local shops then in most of the area the shopkeepers do not accept bitcoin for shopping, may be in some area like in Brazil and Russian and in China bitcoin will be accepted in local markets but still in most of the area bitcoin is not accepted as currency for shopping.

As of yet I've only bought domains and web hosting and namecheap with bitcoin. Have not seen any local merchant to accept it but I guess apart from a few eCommerce websites that accept bitcoin, the most you could do with it is buy some services online.

Most of them are direct bitcoin payment and very few are accepting bitcoin through some exchangers. Even gold ornaments are available for bitcoin payment in my region.

I haven't tried real estate deals through bitcoin payments, so not sure about that.

I bought a domain with bitcoin once a year and I have been several times to buy electricity tokens with bitcoin. In my area there are some stores that accept bitcoin as a payment, but I've never tried because I am more interested in buying with bitcoin in online. I can not survive without the fiat though it has some of the bitcoin in the wallet because in my area bitcoin payments are not popular so I could not use bitcoin for payment. In direct payments, I also will choose fiat because it was more practical and faster. So I need both, bitcoin as online payments and fiat as direct payments.

Well you can buy many things with bitcoin . You can convert them to USD.
And if you convert you can buy everything.
Well thats pretty basic.
Now when it comes to buy things directly with bitcoins , there are only a few things.
Like till now i have only heard of Starbucks accepting transaction made in Bitcoin and Steam , for buying games.

You can buy every stuff that you want but in limited amount . Usually you can find many offers to buy things from the exchange of gift card like things at some sites like purse.io  .
But I will recommend you to buy product that you want from online site use your own fiat . I mean first convert your bitcoin into fiat and then use your money .
Because recently I heard that some carders( usually scammers ) are making gift card from carding and then sell at low price that is illegal . So use step to step procedure to use your bitcoin in better way .

For now, bitcoin is not a legal currency that can be acceptable by all types of business. Yes you cannot survive without fiat on your pocket, because there is no Mc Donald or burger King's outlet in the world will accept your bitcoin payment.

You can use bitcoin via online. You can pay or buy online using bitcoin. You can also convert into cash then transfer in your bank account to make it cash on hand. 

I think you can buy anything "buyable" with bitcoins without any restrictions if you go through third party companies like shopawl. They deal with big wholesale and retail shops like aliexpress and banggoods and so all you need to do is to procure your items through them and they will pay with fiat currency and then convert its equivalence into bitcoins for you to wire them. Some fees apply though but it's an alternative if the shop you intend shopping doesn't accept BTC.

It's cool and all that the acceptance in Brazil is quite on the higher side compared with other countries, but what I want to know is how frequent Bitcoin is being used to pay for things.

I can't find anything pointing towards any numbers or statistics telling me whether or not people actually use that payment option.

Mainly because of the fact that Bitcoin is seen far more as an investment tool rather than a currency tool. Also, how often do these webshops get checked to see whether or not they still accept Bitcoin?

As bitcoin community grow and more and more users are being knowledgeable about bitcoin you can almost buy everything here in the Philippines there is  a financial services platform called coins.ph we can pay our utility bills , buy load , book a hotel  , buy game credits , buy website domain  and many more as many more users adapt bitcoin I believe  that many door will be open and many goods will accept bitcoin as a payment system.

I use bitcoin to pay for my rent and online stuff. Also when some of my friends pay for me (for a dinner etc) I repay them in bitcoins.
