Title: Old computer bitcoin help for a noobie pls.
Post by: chunkyjunkie on June 15, 2011, 11:05:27 PM
Hello, and thank you for your time.

I am currently mining bitcoins on my main system without much trouble, ordered and looking forward to  a second 5770 to crossfire.

Anyways my question is I have an old computer here, I believe it has an AGP x 4 vid card ( Radeon 9550 XL, P/N 102A 0353110 )

Couple quick questions, is there a agp x 4 vid card available that supports opencl that I can buy?

2nd if I don't know much about building a computer, could i just buy a new motherboard, memory and add another windows xp ( for the new mother board )
( if the motherboard fits in the case )?

Or anyone have a link to a cheap complete system from like new egg?

If I know I have every part I will need and they are compatible, I know I can put it all together :)

I can't promise anything but if I use someones setup and it is a good deal I would be happy to send some bitcoins upon me purchasing it and getting it to work.

Thanks in advance for any help.

The best chance you're gonna have for an AGP is this...A radeon 4650:

As for your second question...

Get something like this :

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856101115

And stick the biggest/coolest videocard you can in there, stuff it somewhere, and let the thing mine and mine and mine:)

At the beginning of 2010, I tried out an AGP HD 4670 for gaming in an old (built in 2004) single-core Pentium 4 system. The CPU bottlenecked the card, so I just sold off the components and used the money toward a (used) Intel X48 (Core 2 Duo) motherboard with PCI Express.

As far as your old system goes, I don't think it would be worthwhile to try and mine using it. An HD 4670 only gets about 36.14 Mhash/sec (40.11 Mhash/sec at best), and for $105 for the card after rebate at Newegg, it just doesn't make much sense pricewise. To compare, I got an HD 5870 on eBay for $220 that does ten times the hashrate.
