Title: Problems accessing Silk Road as of 5:35pm MST 6/15/11
Post by: randomuser71469 on June 15, 2011, 11:39:30 PM
When I try to access the site, it pops up a dialog box that says:

Load external content?
An external application is needed to handle:

http://ian.........

NOTE: External applications are NOT Tor safe by default and can unmask you!

If this file is untrusted, you should either save it to view while offline or in a VM,
or consider using a transparent Tor proxy like T(A)ILS
LiveCD or torsocks

Anyone having the same issue or know what's going on?
Hopefully this doesn't affect the price of the BTC significantly...

Feedback is appreciated

Yeah... I decided to see what their computation of the "bitcoin value" was using the online tor network (not the app) and I get the following message when trying to access the site:

The requested resource could not be loaded because the server returned an error:
  503 Service Unavailable

I've had it time out before due to slow data stream but this is a first for me regarding the 503 error.

I don't know why you guys are still discussing this -- as posted above, the website will be offline for the next few days.

Get this crap off of here. Every time someone mentions SR on here, they are doing a disservice to the bitcoin community.

I actually think the black market might *make* the bitcoin movement.  Sure has got a lot of attention, and made a whole lot of people want to buy btc...it's the one surefire area that they need an untracable form of payment.

To pretend something isn't happening by not mentioning it: that's not what the 'bitcoin movement' is about.  Actually shows how universally useful this stuff is.  Even outlaws like it :)

I don't say this to be rude, but with any currency , there is a black market (including paypal - if you dont believe me watch the movie called "Jackin' 101"). What you said is the equivalent of saying "Don't mention drugs, it makes cash look naughty". Again, not being rude but simply stating a fact. These underground markets are a measurable element when breaking down the overall statement of cash flows of any given nation.

So the server went down unexpectedly today. This was very unnerving because we thought it had somehow been seized or something terrible like that. Fortunately it was just some kind of glitch and we were able to reboot. Everything has been backed up and is totally current, but we are not going to turn the site back on for a couple of days while we work out a way to prevent such problems. We are terribly sorry for this inconvenience, but we want to provide the best service possible, and random outages just aren't going to cut it. We know it must be terribly frustrating, but we are taking the better-safe-than-sorry approach and we hope you understand.

This explanation reeks of "I'm not telling you something."

So that is going to be a pain in the butt. They also link to this thread http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=16653.0;all (http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=16653.0;all)

Tried accessing the bitcoin forum thread but just comes back and says that it has been moved or is off limits.

any ideas on where we are supposed to talk about this downtime?  The site that shall not be named has some of my bitcoins....have they disappeared???

any pointers gratefully received :)

Hopefully the site that shall not be mentioned will be up soon enough. Patience is key in this scenario.

it's not specifically hidden, all non-newbie forums are hidden i believe and posting is restricted, not because of that thread but because this forum can't handle all the new guests/lurkers so they require registration now (which means you have an influx of new users with newbie status that can't do much on the forum).  which just ends up pissing people off anyway :p

I wonder if SR is vulnerable to hacking attacks...

No matter what happens now, pandora's box has been opened. There will always be a new TOR anonymous marketplace, no matter what, so all the SR haters should be grateful, as these types of sites are exactly the reason the BTC is going to become mainstream and increase in value.

Don't judge others as you will be judged yourself. If it's not hurting anyone then why would you care? It's not your life. Personally, I think it's awesome someone finally figured out a way to use the internet in this way and thumb your finger at the man, so to speak... 8)

wow you SIR, have hit the nail on the head.. rarely do i see posts that this correct (and no i'm not being sarcastic though with such correctness i could see how one might think that).

SR (and sites ilke it) are the best thing that could have happened for the adoption/popularity boost of bitcoins.  a lot of people are upset about the associations being created, but i guess those people would prefer bitcoins remain as obscure and unadopted as they were before the article on SR that raised public awareness of BTC's..

Or you get those who just post crap to get past "newbie" status which is just as bad as spam.

SR's continued absence is definitely giving 'Black Market' a bump in use in the same area SR was famous for...undoubtedly helping the cause of both.  A lot of passion and drama on the outskirts, so we'll see.

SR was recently shut down temporarily because of too much attention.  we know about it, keep it t yourself or tell people you trust i just dont think anything should pop up about SR on google, there are plenty of other legal sites that participate in BTC, BTC its getting plenty of exposure, illegal marketplaces dont need exposure.  SR and the like are awesome i wouldnt want to do anything that would risk comprimising them.

I kind of think you're right, it's just: we've nowhere else to go.  It's about the only place we can get any info on what is going on...but you put it better than I've heard...most people are so angry at us, but we use btc, so we gotta go somewhere...plus, where else would we find out if another site, like Black Market, is coming about?  And I doubt google hits on black market will be that exciting...it's too generic a term...most people that actually use site know it's on hold...but I totally agree not to start threads with name spelled out...

Wrong, they shut down because they were getting more traffic than they could handle, so they upgraded and re-opened.

If you check the homepage (if you can) they are down again for the time being until they've found out why their system went offline.

That was, when, on the 14th? The 15th? Long time for a server to be down.

thanks for the confirmation - this is pretty much the only place I've seen this mentioned - I had assumed as much due to the fact that search engines showed some content of the hidden forums.
