I'm unsure of BitMinter specifically, but you'll probably need to mine there a few hours to start earning BTC. You don't "lose" the coins you would've earned during this time, but there's a kind of delay in you being credited them. Doesn't really explain why you have NMC in your account, though. They might not use their "shift" system there.
