Title: I have an unused vps... Post by: pixel on April 14, 2013, 01:00:05 AM I have an unused VPS and i would like to use it for somthing bitcoin or altcoin related, not mining but something to benefit the *coin community. Are there any scripts that I can put on it that would be helpful, or a quick site I could through together in an hour or two?
I look forward to your ideas and opinions! Title: Re: I have an unused vps... Post by: ASICPool on April 14, 2013, 01:21:17 AM How about a bitcointalk.org public mining pool?
I can help with setup! Title: Re: I have an unused vps... Post by: pixel on April 14, 2013, 01:23:58 AM How about a bitcointalk.org public mining pool? I should have listed specs, but can that be done on 256 MB of RAM?I can help with setup! Title: Re: I have an unused vps... Is there any way to get a profit off it?Title: Re: I have an unused vps... Post by: ASICPool on April 14, 2013, 02:22:09 AM Most pools have a 3% fee.

Title: Re: I have an unused vps... Post by: BkkCoins on April 14, 2013, 05:11:41 AM You could run an Electrum server. There's a few already but more is good for redundancy. It's just a bitcoind install with a fairly simple electrum-server python app on top. Easy to set up and if you need bitcoind client for some other use then it could co-reside. Maybe offer Tor access as there is only 1 or 2 doing that now.
I have a simple daemon script for displaying Confirmation Time statistics (web page) that runs on top of bitcoind as well. Takes almost no overhead. See here (http://bitcoin.speedstats.org). edit: just saw your limit of 256MB RAM. I don't think you can run bitcoind on that. Which means a pool is out as well because it needs bitcoind at least. In my experince bitcoind needs 512 MB and crashes even then quite often. It really prefers 1GB. I think 512MB may be more reliable if 64 bit OS. Title: Re: I have an unused vps... Post by: wumpus on April 14, 2013, 08:43:27 AM A bitcoin network DNS seed node could easily run on that.
I don't know how to go about running them, though, if you're interested you could ask on #bitcoin-dev on IRC. |
