Title: (POC) PSP Bitcoin Miner
Post by: homemister on April 14, 2013, 02:18:29 AM
Hey Guys,

My name is Alex and the other day I got bored and decided to start creating a Bitcoin miner for the PSP! For those of you who don't know what a PSP is look here-> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_Portable_hardware (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_Portable_hardware)

So atm it can connect to a pool, get work, hash the work, submit the work and repeat all the steps over again (It has some issues with submitting the correct work, see video)

Here is a little video of it working->http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VOJLgWY7No (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VOJLgWY7No)

I'm looking for others to start to help me with this project. So if anyone is interested, let me know by posting below and I'll put up a git repo for us all to use.

I would like to also work on coding the sha256 hash to use the onboard ME(Media Engine) and VFPU. So if anyone has skills in asm coding with a mips chip, let me know.

Happy Coding!

Alex

Wow. I wish I kept my PSP. What speeds do you get on such a tiny and slow CPU?

Edit: Nevermind. Found it. X3 Still cool.

What hash rate are you seeing?

ATM 35K, but hopefully with the use of the ME(Media Engine, aka a nother 32bit cpu on the PSP) and the VFPU I could push ~100K

Great stuff!

I have a working PSP dev environment here and would love to work on this. Have you put the code anywhere yet?

*medal awarded

Cool idea, I see these along with ps1 and 2s in the pile with xbox 1s at goodwill and Gsales all the time. Maybe set up a donate addy and thread in the main forum after newb status is up? unless this has already happened then cheers highspeed.

Here's an idea. GPU accelerated litecoin mining on a PS3.

Now why the fuck would you do something like that?  ;D

This has got to be one of the most pointless and amazing things i've seen all week. Kudos.

Completely unprofitable but a fun project regardless lol. Would work if you were the first miner on any new currency though. I wish I could code stuff like that

Awesome project, even if it's not especially useful. Nice one!

If you can charge the battery for free (at work, school...) you can take it home and hash for pure profit ;)

There is no way this would be able to pay for the power it uses

The thing is, I'm living im a house witch has gas, electricity, etc included... So if I spend 10 or 10000 it's the same price at the end of the month.
If I have 3 PSP stopped without doing nothing mith as well put them working!  ;D

Thats good concept for sure though dude. I hard bricked my PSP trying to get custom firmware so I dont care about it anymore, but the concept is worthwhile.

Yes that's why I said "If you can charge the battery for free". Anyway it was just a joke.

Hi
Do you think LTC mining on the PSP is worth it? How high can it get?

never in your life will ANY PSP do much. they're tiny computers with tiny power.

I would really like to try this, is there any way I could get a copy of this program?
