Bitcoin is the only relevant answer.

And I know there are other currencies, but when are they ever accepted as currency with businesses? If "alternatives" exist, they need to be accepted and transacted as currency. Period.

For me ICONOMI Monero Dash,Ethereum  and Zcash were the top crypto currencies for the year 2016 and it was a good year for traders as they made a good amount of money with those coins.

This thread is more fitting in an altcoin section. It is hardly an economic discussion. BTW as I can see the coins on that list were selected only because their price went crazy.
It is not exactly the best way to define a good cryptocurrency. Some of these altcoin are unfinished projects (for example: SafeMaidCoin) which may disappoint us in the future.

No more thinking is required. Bitcoin is always the same with the most popular as well the leader of entire digital currencies. Altcoins were the one which makes it popular as there are several other alternatives to compete with it.

No doubt, Bitcoin will remain the leader of crypto currencies for the next decade or even more. No other Altcoin has managed to compete with bitcoins. ETH showed the potential but then it was broken into two stream,.  ETH and ETC.    Both of them if  combine also cant give any threat for Bitcoin domination.

I am invested in nem and it came second. Maybe because it was still very cheap and low in volume so even a small pump will register as a large percentage in price change. We will see if it will still perform that great if the price and volume is a little bit higher.

For me bitcoin is still number one in all cryptocurrencies. The article should also consider volume, transactions and user base.

I don't know if the OP is taking about Altcoins, if not, the best cryptocurrency is Bitcoin, there is no debate about this.  All other crypto derived their value from BTC, but recently there have been some projects with nice concept, it just remain if the team can see it through, I like the idea behind Factom and ICONOMI.

Yes it is true, the 2016 world cryptocurrency very lively, very large transactions increase since first bitcoin found in 2009. I think, to repeat or exceed 2016 is very difficult, I predicted the industry cryptocurrency would drop in this year.

In 2017 I expect to see the rise of new competitors to Bitcoin. There are many reasons for that: 1. mass adoption; 2. transaction speed; 3. popularity among businesses; 4. user friendly and very secure apps to use. I'm looking at Byteball, Monero and Dash very closely.

My list is a little bigger :)
IMHO there are quite a number of other coins that need to keep an eye at, some are "sleeping giants", some are strong newcomers.
While I hope that Monero will continue to perform, I am afraid that such a good year as 2016 will be hard to beat...

Title: Re: 2016’s top cryptocurrencies

Bitcoin is the probably on top of the list because of the most adopted coin all over other cryptocurrencies.
The demand of bitcoin in the year 2016 hooks up that is why when 2017 entered it reaches up to 1100 $ which is good thing for everyone and on the face of bitcoin.
So we look forward for more this year in bitcoin.

Yeah Monero is on the rise!

It's a really cool coin, I bought some few months ago. Fact is that anonimity is an important aspect of cryptos... But BTC hardly answers to this precise point and that's really something missing.
Especially when dealing withn the less legal part of the web ;D

What I like is that nobody can see my wallet address somewhere then see the amount of money in my wallet. It doesn't have necessarily to be tied to the illegal stuff...
However, let's be nice and keep the discussion about the list not only Monero ;)
The list has more coins, some having a surprising place. Still thinking I should not have given up to Maidsafe so early/so easy. Ohwell...

There are many other crypto currencies besides bitcoin, but bitcoin with no doubt is the most popular among it. I heard that Litecoin and Ethereum are also attracting many attention from the side of investors today.

Aside from Monero, I will nominate for Ethereum since they have shown great price and the number of users are indeed increasing, they are my favorites aside from bitcoin. Though there are many coins that are on top such as ripple and many more but I will nominate Monero and Ethereum since I have hold of that coins and made some profit. This 2017 the coins that has high potentials will be Trump, Putin, Bill, and Pesobit. But dont ever forget bitcoins its the unbeatable crypcocurrency.

According to my views in 2016 bitcoin was the No.1 crypto currency while in your provided list bitcoin is kept at 10 number. I have a doubt on that list. In 2016 I am sure that bitcoin got a great success due to the adoption in that year.

Bitcoin is obviously the king of the crypto-currencies,but monero has proved to be a reliable crypto-currency over the years as well. They provide one of the highest anonymity in transactions and they still have room to expand. It is surely on my watch list for 2017. There are a few more recent launched crypto coins that catched my eye for 2017. For example Stratis which made a lot of new developments and I see it explode this year. There are some more but I don't want to promote them here. ;)

I agree with you Sir. Monero is gonna go big this 1st part of the year. One of the few altcoins that if you would look from the time of launch, that there is enticing development in terms of price. Unlike other coins that start big, then go down.

I think it gonna do about the same as bitcoin. Not identical, but with lots of similarities.

the ranking is based on ROI, and of course of factors are more important in the long term, like how serious the developers are, the scalability and the innovation.

But 2769.02% of ROI in a year is not something that can be overlooked

Why bitcoin not became number one, maybe because it is really expensive compare to other coins.
Anyway, thank you for this information I have been searching for this for about 2 days since I am planning to start to invest the next month. And now I know which coin will I put my investment aside from bitcoin. Of course, even if bitcoin did not hit the number 1 I still believe that bitcoin is the number one.

Of course these altcoins were profitable investment, but Monero seems to be outstanding. I think some coins and Ethereum based tokens has good chance to achieve the same success until the next year, people are recognising the profitability of the blockchain projects.

Many cryptocurrencies appear all the time trying to compete Bitcoin, usualy with not much success. I would maybe put accent on Monero which is on the way up and to become more popular. The main reason is perfect anon at th moment and Bitcoin has lost a great deal of anonimity and that is the reason why some users have abandoned it.

Hell! Bitcoin did a good at the year of 2016. Before it ended it made a good jump and also after. From where? $300? $350? Look at where it is now. Tripled the amount it was. And you say other crypto's besides that. How cruel is that to bitcoin?  ;D

I would just go with the volume sorted in descending order:

1    Bitcoin     $14,923,705,720    $925.74    16,120,787 BTC    $86,743,200    2.03%    sparkline
2    Ethereum     $950,260,548    $10.78    88,177,322 ETH    $7,289,660    0.95%    sparkline
4    Litecoin     $189,925,010    $3.84    49,466,981 LTC    $2,427,200    -0.11%    sparkline
7    Dash     $107,532,214    $15.26    7,045,887 DASH    $1,844,320    0.40%    sparkline
5    Monero     $168,796,832    $12.23    13,807,060 XMR    $1,817,870    2.49%    sparkline
28    E-Dinar Coin     $8,293,219    $0.608827    13,621,634 EDR    $1,595,990    9.82%    sparkline
22    Tether     $14,951,740    $1.00    14,951,591 USDT *    $1,426,540    -0.00%    sparkline
13    Factom     $29,113,644    $3.33    8,753,219 FCT *    $1,157,920    10.29%    sparkline
6    Ethereum Classic     $121,955,844    $1.38    88,138,763 ETC    $825,106    0.44%    sparkline
16    Zcash     $21,795,697    $43.18    504,781 ZEC    $772,752    -1.26%    sparkline
https://coinmarketcap.com/

They are the top 10 in my opinion, and interestingly, not all of them are in top 10 by market cap.

Zcash Coin must be interesting, and also Tether which is a very classic old coin.

You forgot to mention that not all altcoins have the goal of being used as a currency in the first place, just look at Ripple for example, RIpple provides blockchain solutions to banks.

And there are many other altcoins that do not have 'becoming a widely used internet currency' as a primary goal.

If we judge from the percent increase in the market based on investors funds, another coin may be number one but they are still far far away from bitcoin, ini value or usability as an alternative payment. Bitcoin value grow more than a hundred percent in a year is more amazing than 2769% but the value only $0.4807. I'm not underestimate it, and looks like it has pretty fast growth as now reach $12.
Overall, anything can happen in cryptocurrency world but the number one still bitcoin.

The demand of bitcoin in 2016 rises up much and those who trusted to invest there. So I guess, this year will be good year again for bitcoin as 2016 hits it on top.

No doubt that bitcoin will always be the best crypto currency for 2016 and for the upcoming years. And yes ethereum is on its 2nd place. I don't rely on my own opinion with alt coins as long as it can surpass the coin market cap and a lot of investors will take a look for that coin and manage to invest thousands and millions of dollars.

Different point of view makes a different result, Op stated the best cryptocurrencies from percent of gain in a year, and you seen it from market cap which bitcoin as the first one is the highest of course. But, ethereum impressed me as second rank with $9,3 Billion market cap. But, as a digital currency, common people see the highest price at the first time.

It is more convenient and more efficient for them. But of course Bitcoin is still on the top regardless. For active traders I think XMR and ETH made the better gains compared to the rest.

I think it is because if the high price of bitcoin that is why trading is not that easy. Average people with an average salary cant have 5 bitcoin in just one swoop or one payroll so they tend to pick other coins. That is what I do and it is faster profit than just letting it stay in bitcoin.

I disagree. The average people you speak of pick altcoins over Bitcoin is because they believe that the altcoins that they are holding and supporting so valiantly will also follow Bitcoin's path to a $1000 per coin valuation. I am also a victim of this kind thinking late last year. I almost invested 2/3 of my Bitcoins in ETC. Good thing my friend put me back in my senses.

My two top choices are Bitcoin and Mooncoin. Bitcoin is the obvious answer as it has the first mover advantage.

Mooncoin is very old and trusted blockchain trusted by a lot of people with over 33970 funded addresses at the moment and more than 1.75 million transactions successfully processed since 2013 without experiencing forks.

The price of Moon right now is cheap and everyone can join the ecosystem and give it a try.

They are now developing a new smart likes system which will be operational across the internet that will give users the ability to transfer value fast and reward others and themselves.

The name of this system is Moonlite (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1733963.msg17349370#msg17349370).

We all need to diversify our portfolios and give other trusted and proven blockchains the ability to shine!

Bitcoin did very well last year, we hope it continues in this momentum. Litecoin though did well too but not like bitcoin. I will advice coins investors to keep faith with bitcoin as it has come to stay. 2017, those interested in buy and hold type of investment are going to gain it tremendously. Margin or leverage traders will all also gain as the market start with high fluctuations and volatility this year.

The name of this system is Moonlite (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1733963.msg17349370#msg17349370).

We all need to diversify our portfolios and give other trusted and proven blockchains the ability to shine!

If you really think Mooncoin is a top cryptocurrency then you are a stupid idiot. No honestly you are. I am sure there are many people here have become so jaded because of the losses they got from holding altcoins. Not only that, they also gave their full support for them only to lose the amount which really was important to them. The amount of their altcoins in Bitcoin value.

Bitcoin is the only relevant answer.

And I know there are other currencies, but when are they ever accepted as currency with businesses? If "alternatives" exist, they need to be accepted and transacted as currency. Period.

Well, although there were others that had better results than those you mention including BTC, in the case of LTC I do not think we can talk about a good performance, if we consider for example that throughout the last year  was not even mentioned in articles and publications when compared it to other projects that had more diffusion, moreover that if you analyze it more in depth you will find that
it lost approximately fifty percent of its value expressed in BTC however its value in USD was maintained thanks to the increase in the value of BTC, if the latter had not happened it would have been disastrous to LTC, who knows if that happens later but for now it seems that there is not much interest on this, nobody knows if this trend will continue this year and how it would affect to LTC.

I think the list here is built on a wrong criterion. It looks at how big was the price rising of a currency in USD but it doesn't take into account what the price actually is (so, Monero has 13$, btc has almost $1k and yet bitcoin is on the 10-th place) and for how long the currency exists. I believe it's quite natural for a cryptocurrency to get from less than 1$ to something around 10$ but it doesn't mean at all that in a few years this currency will not remain with the same price. I've never really heard about monero before.

There are people who believe in every crypto they see even the stupid one. They are so much excited they start to buy and wait patiently the right moment, wich may never come, and during this time tell in every place: look at 123coin it will be bigger than bitcoin, or it is the next bitcoin. But you never hear about those coins some months later. And as you say,  they also gave their full support for them, wich makes me think, they didn't understand the project when started, or naive or lack of knowledges ?

In 2017 I expect to see the rise of new competitors to Bitcoin. There are many reasons for that: 1. mass adoption; 2. transaction speed; 3. popularity among businesses; 4. user friendly and very secure apps to use. I'm looking at Byteball, Monero and Dash very closely.

2016 was the year of Altcoins, many altcoins pop ed up and many of them are better than bitcoin in some aspect like privacy or transaction speed and their adoption/integration with other (third party) services. Besides the coin you mentioned I want to mention also Ethereum and Iconomi and some others which were/are and have potential to be successful.

I think it would be bitcoins. Like English dialect, anyone on the mother earth knows how to speak on English dialect, we know that if you do not know how to speak English, you cannot do other things. Like on bitcoins, bitcoins is one of the best cryptocurrencies, it is one that we need to confirm our payment
What are you talking about .English is the just one language in a million and you think that everyone should know to speak english.I would call that bullshit as english comes only as the fourth largest used language worldwide. Monero ETH Zcash and Dash are the alts to look out for other than bitcoin .

I don't really get why people really believe other crypto-currencies can go ahead and compete with bitcoin at all but if I have to go ahead and say the top cryptos I'd have to go with Monero and ETH.

Both of them are not one of those shitcoins with nothing new to them they actually go above and beyond when it comes to innovation, Monero has a cool anonymous feature with it so it has its own little niche and ETH is fast.

The greatest price rises of Trumpcoin always happened at key events like when he won the election, when he got sworn into office and when he became the Republican nominee. The price rises in Cagecoin though, don't seem to be related to Nicolas Cage events. It seems, from reading your link, that a large number of coins were burned in September. If so, that is a legitimate reason for the rise in prices. There may also not be enough sell orders in the exchanges as only a $5000 buy order seemed to be enough to increase the price 3000 times. Maybe Nicolas Cage bought it? ;D

Most of them are looking for the next big crypto if they happens to hold about 10k of it and the price goes $10, it sure a good profit. You do blieve in XMR and ETH, these two are no different when they first started. There are competitions for anon coins and platforms such as ETH and the likes.

Having 10k of ARKs or Waves, does matter when its price rise up to $10.

Trumpcoin is a good coin but its volatility is amazing. From seven thousand satoshi it climbed up to 60k satoshi in just one week and after three days it falls back again to 10k satoshi.  This just means that the coin is very well alive and its traders are always observing. If bitcoins price did not climb up possibly its price will stabilize at 40k satoshi but due to bitcoins price inflation many have sold their Trump coins in exchange for bitcoin.

there is nothing special about that altcoin, what you are describing happens to all of them.
simply put altcoins get pump and dumped and when they do most of them go very high in the process because their orderbooks are too thin to resist a rise and also too thin to resist any kind of dump that is why you can see wild swings all around.

Bitcoin is the most successful crypto currency, 2016 was a good year and the start of 2017 gives us a good price. Now that we are have cross again to $1,000 and most likely we will be hitting the all time high for the first time, if this will happen, I can declare that 2017 is the year for bitcoin.

yeah it is truth then. however, I do think that pascal coin is also as successful as Bitcoin since its prices have just increased more than 10000%. Pascalcoin is a very new coin and I believe that in the future, it will become very famous. I am a little disappointed the zcash. When It was created, most of the people here supported it very much. But now, the prices is still less then $50 per zcash.

Well bitcoin has been growing a lot faster than any other currency out there, not just for the past few months but over the years, and I don’t think that trump’s coin is going to have a better rise rate, and probably by the end of his time it will go down, it is a cheap way to use his position to earn money and I am not finding any possibilities for its successes.

Yes over the years Bitcoin has been an unbeatable investment. Imagine if the guy in 2009 who recieved 10000 BTC for selling 2 pizzas probably worth around $20 held on to the BTC. He would currently be worth  $10,470,000. If 10,000 BTC was valued at $20, then 1 BTC was valued at $0.002. The price of 1 BTC has increased from $0.002 in 2009 to $1047 today. That's 52349900% !!! Let me spell it: Fifty-two million three hundred and forty-nine thousand nine hundred percent.

Bitcoin the best coin?

There are people who disagree with this statement, claiming there are better coins to usu or invest

It is worth mentioning that most of this coins were higly listed on our yearly and monthly summary (links on the first page, first post). Therefore it seems that alt coins truly start becoming an alternative to bitcoin

Bitcoin will continue to occupy the top spot of all cryptocurrencies  and the other altcoins such as monero, zcash, dash and ethereum will compete for the remaining market  share. IMO btc lacks some elements to keep it a top coin and hope to see developers improve it in the future.

Do you think that today's minimum in the price bitcoin is explained by some imperfections on the part of developers? If this is so, which boundary prices for bitcoin can be maximum. Already voiced even $ 10 k and then not the limit. But I already have doubts.

what you said it's truly happening altcoin are being all pumped, but the strange thing is that bitcoin did not lost any value, that's good it men that bitcoin was not artificially pumped and the value is genuine, i think the eft cause the miners to go with the other chain, because maybe they think thaat the rejection was due to the bitcoin not scaling, they want to do something now

I will disagree. It's totally neutral news. Sure, ETF would boost price of bitcoins at least two times but we don't need it.
Bitcoin is and will be the best long term investment, altcoins are always will be that short term hit-or-miss type of venture.
Lastly, bitcoin may not have ETF but altcoins won't have it either.

Bitcoin is on top but can you sure that this won`t change? Just look for example at Dash - today it has hit 100$. Also the market cap rises. And this is just one currency. Another ones are ETH, XMR, MAID, NEM - Just look how much they have gained in our 2016 cryptocurrencies rank at the beginning of the thread. Bitcoin is leader but for how long?

There are lots of good coins existing today, they aren't just getting much attention which is why you can't notice it because there were not discussed much in the forum. The community is much focused on the bigger ones which currently its value are more than $20.  ETH and DASH are the best ones to invest right now for their price hasn't yet fly up to $200 but an individual without much to invest can't afford these two anymore. Check the rest under them because those are the next ones that will also be rising. https://coinmarketcap.com/

There is no doubt about that, people have been focused too much on the bitcoin these days and forgot about the altcoins, which makes a good opportunity right now to go and grab them, because the bitcoin will eventually go down in terms of price and when that happens people are going to jump back to the altcoins and make profit from those and their price will go up.

Some big fish is actively manipulating the crypto-market caps right now. Look at the market capitalization of Ether and Dash. Ether has crossed a market cap of $4 billion, while Dash is approaching the $1 billion mark. IMO, they are extremely over-priced currently.

Etfs rejected. It is a bad a news for bitcoin. Anyone thinks diffrent? To me it will give a boost for altcoins

The ETF was actually rejected but the price of bitcoin was still steady and no signs of major volatility. The only thing is that after the ETF also follows the conflict and possible splitting of bitcoin into BTC and BTU. The news of hardfork storming bitcoin has caused panic to the bitcoin community and that stir has led to the transfer of investors to DASH and Ethereum.  The price pump in ETH and DASH was a clear sign that many feared of what will happen to bitcoin thus they shifted to these two altcoins.

Dash recently hit ocet 800.000$ market cap and eth over 4.000.000$ whereas bitcoin falls. Its market cap is only 17.000.000$ (was over 20kk). Also bitcoin market share is one of the lowest about 70%. Anybody knows What could it mean?

Bitcoin will be at the top and next are those alternative coins who support bitcoin. People will choose bitcoin to convert their money into it. Stacking bitcoin will be good when you are about to stocked it because the price are unstable where when you buy bitcoin when the price is low you can sell them in the price of around 1300$

Yes, I agree, no one can change the bitcoin on top of crypto-currencies, it would be difficult if somebody wants to beat bitcoin and bring it down. Bitcoin was no 1 in 2016 also and will continue to remain no. 1 in 2017 also.

It's not the ideal outcome but its not a disaster either. I think the price will stabilize after the speculators move out.

Not actually overpriced though, but traders and investors only found some value in these coins while btc is becoming unstable; they just move their assets for awhile in the crypto markets while the tides are so bad in btc's economy. It'll last, though, and the altcoin markets would prosper once more while we're having instability in the bitcoin markets.

It is a known fact that the alt coins will rise when the price of bitcoin weakens and so is the reason we are seeing a huge rally in all the top alt coins and it is really good for the traders who had faith in those coins and had a good amount in their pockets, they would have made easy money with it for holding those coins for a very long time.Lets see how the price will be when the price of bitcoin stats its next bull run.

Dash, after some price corrections this year still has room for increasing its value during 2018 and beyond. This is mainly due to the new Dash Evolution feature to be released by the end of this year. Dash evolution includes savings accounts, user names, auto payments, merchants store and more, all this within the wallet itself. Indeed, Dash might experience higher mass adoption after the Dash evolution release. See more information in the video below:

DASH seems to be holding steady although many are trying to dump it. But also Bitcoin gains in price again. But what is intresting is that three biggest altcoins, which have risen a lot are still holing their high levels. In the past such quick growth usually resulted in even quicker dump. To me it is a clear sign that altcoins are building its strong position and in time will overtake bitcoin.

Anybody knows why litecoin grows so fast? It all looked like it was dead and know it seems that its alive.

how did you conclude that it was dead?
- litecoin has had a very stable price for a very long time. it was worth $3.5 for the most time and fluctuated from $3 to $4 for the past year.
- litecoin has a lot of users and a lot of Full nodes for a very long time.
- it is constantly improving and it has a good developer team.
- there actually are some real world usage for litecoin although they are not that many.
- the trading volume has always been very decent and high.

now how do you call such a coin as dead?!!!

with all that said, what is happening now is a pump and it always happens in all the altcoins, they get pumped and their prices go up in 4-7 days then they come back down to normal price levels.

I simply call it dead because for almost three years nothing happened in price. It didnt allow to gain and such period in cryptocurrencies is almost eternity. Stable price is not precoius for today. It may be in couple of years but today majority of people wants to make money. We will see how long will this pump last

Could tell me about any improvemnts? I know only about segwit but it still isnt active. For example monero dash or ethereum are constantly improoving but i dont know anything about ltc so i would be grateful for some news

According to some analysis Monero seems to be one of the cryptocurrencies that were in 2016 the most popular and on the bigest rise. One of the reasons is definetely the biger anonimity then bitcoin has. Many here have also mentioned Dash that also looks very promising so we'll see how it will develope.

Just take a look at the Litecoin website and community and you'll see that the coin is still being worked on.

Segwit is the biggest possible improvement currently, there's nothing else that's being worked on afaik.

I was looking for coins which I can invest and I have to say I only have few btc left this time. If I have too should just choose the very cheapest one like NEM to get its full reward when it hit big time? I'm not sure what NEM could do actually but I only see its the cheapest yet the quantity of it seem too very impossible to grow specially because the circulating supply is 8 billion?
Ain't this too much to have a value of about $1 each before the year 2020 ends?

that strategy may work for you some other time but currently the only things you should invest in and make profit are those coins that are showing all signs of pump. these days the market is hot with all these pumping coins and they go up a lot, just try to find one, invest on the way up, take a small profit and get out instead of waiting for the top.
this way you can earn a decent profit each day easily.

We can still argue that Ripple is not real and 'true' cryptocurrency. Real cryptocurrency = decentralization.
How crypto controlled by one company, with centralized validation, premined and 20% taxed with ability to freeze tokes of its users can be considered a crypto.

Ripple is more of a payment network.  It allows payments with other cryptos - it's not trying to overtake Bitcoin or be better than Bitcoin or anything like that, so I don't mind that its price rose.

Cryptocurrencies to me is merely investment items having zero utilities. Investment in cryptocurrencies is similar to betting on horse race, you earn if your horse leads. Bitcoin is real king and so far has created its existence in financial system.
Altcoins on the other hand hardly accepted by merchants and consider if merchant accept altcoins, he only accepts if alts are convertible in Bitcoin.

It is not about thatthe market cap of Ripple coin is higher than some altcoins, it is very important that Ripple indeed is not a real cryptocurrency.
It is basically made by banks, to make settlements between them and to make it easier for them to do summaries.

For example, bitcoin has decentralization, monero the same, and both of the coins are pretty much anonymous.
The problem with Ripple is that it is not decentralized, which actually is a huge disadvantage in eyes of every real cryptocurrency trader/investor.
It has become kind of popular, but we should not forget that it doesnt meets the requirements of crypto coin.

Bitcoin has established new ATH. Also litecoin goes on and still rises. Any ideas how high will it go? It is not likely for ltc to reach new ath from my point of view but it is not entirely impossible.

Litecoin segwit will activate in just two days. This will make ltc one of the fastest currency in the world right now. With features such as Litghnitng network it will be beyond the reach of many cryptos, especially bitcoin

Litecoin SegWit finally locked and price falls down. That is perhaps because of the rise of Bitcoin. it seems that the king doesnt want to give the throne. New ath on bitfinex is 1436$ - now that what I call the price. How will it affect other coins? Well they will probably shorly fall and when correction comes on bitcoin the are likely to grow

Golem has jumped into top10 coinmarketcap. Interesting coin and intresting project. It creates a globalsupercomputer out of user`s devices such as laptops or pc`s. Of course the price has risen recently and it jumped into top 10 but does anyone think this is an intresting project?

For me ICONOMI Monero Dash,Ethereum  and Zcash were the top crypto currencies for the year 2016 and it was a good year for traders as they made a good amount of money with those coins.
yes, eth and zcash did very well in 2016 and even up till now Eth is one of the best crypto currencies. But for price increases in 2017 I think nor of the coin has performed better than what we are see in bitcoin. Bitcoin in the face of storm has out performed all the coins not only in crypto currencies but also in others trading assets'. We hope to see the kind of experience we got in this first quarter of the year.

Bitcoin is the only relevant answer.

And I know there are other currencies, but when are they ever accepted as currency with businesses? If "alternatives" exist, they need to be accepted and transacted as currency. Period.
The reason those alternatives are still an alternative despite the fact they are not accepted almost anywhere is that bitcoin has not gained wide adoption once it does, many of those alternatives will disappear because no one will believe they can pose a threat to bitcoin.

Ethereum has suprased 100$. It is an important event. Of course there are other cryptocurrencies that are worth more than 100$ dash for example, but Ethereum is second crypto with marketcap. Its marketcap is right now over 9,000,000,000$. Eth seems to be following bitcoin

NEM has jumped into fifth position on coinmarketcap.com. That is a huge profit in short time. Of course NEM was in top 10 for a long time but now its top5. Wonder which coin will surprise us next as NEM did?

Bitcoin right now has the largest market cap out of any crypto by a very large margin, not to mention the fact that no governments have approved the use of any other coins other than bitcoin.

Not only government acceptance, bitcoin is the one that has got usage same as the traditional currency that every country has. From a storage token to a potential investment and on several other needs. Based on this bitcoin have got a bigger market capital than the altcoins which are preferred only for trading purpose. A few has been accepted into darkweb and gambling.

Actually it is the largest market but look at ethereu for example. Right now it is 1/3 of btc` cap. Also look on the whole market. bitcoin has the lowest market share right now about 55% (was 52% for a while). This is a signal that not only Bitcoin is important

Yes, thanks to Bitcoin new altcoins are accepted but this in turn slows down Bitcoin adoption. However it is nothing surprising that more people are accepting litecoin or dash if they are faster thane Bitcoin. Transaction speed has to be improved.

Of course. It is good not to bother yoursefl with shitcoins. It isnt however wise not to take a closer look at top at least top 10 coins. They are intresting. Especially ethereum which is not competing with bitcoin or augur which also is meant to be something else as Bitcoin. I see place where such projects can coexist with Bitcoin just beacause the are developed to reach different goals

I think the reason why all the top 10 altcoins went up is because of the recent developments in Japan, especially for Ripple. I think these changes are optimal for cryptos to grow at the pace they are growing at today.

Not all the altcoins in the top 10 are real in terms of their pumps because some and most of the coins are fake and just pumped because of the hype, if you really want a legit coin for the future then you will do some research because some of the legit coins are not easy to pump and they wait for the real investors and future lookers to find them out and then it will have a real pump from real investors.

Yes, a lot of alt coins rising is because of pumping, there are no real investor behinds it, I had checked a few coins and cant find any big project behind the rising, but the coin is still good for trading though, and the fake coin price rising will not going last, it will drop down quickly

Of course Bitcoin stands tall above the others(Altcoins) and it will take another revolutionary innovation to be able to unseat Bitcoin from the top of the other cryptocurrencies. Whatever Altcoins are presently doing Bitcoin is doing better.

And what is your answer on long waitng for confirmations on Bitcoin - even up to 2h - whereas for example litceoin has confirmations after few minutes along  with recent segwit. Is Bitcoin also better in that field?

Yeah the network effect of bitcoin now makes it unstoppable, thats not to say that money cant be made from altcoins, i should know i made abit last year selling zcoin.  ;D

bitcoin is undeniably the top crypto currency. as bitcoin is ahead in other alt coins.
But ethereum has seen the potential as next to bitcoin. Ethereum prove itself in the market.
Like bitcoin, ethereum is also decentralized. Also a distributed public chain network.

the best and top crypto coin/cryptocurency is still bitcoin
never replace and take over position bitcoin in number one crypto coin
Eth number second, bitcoin number 1. Bitcoin is the first and the top. Why, I think not questionable because all new people before knowing altcoin they will know bitcoin first. They will try or bitcoin first. After that they think about altcoins what the best or will be the best like bitcoin. I did too. I know cryptocurrency from bitcoin first. Then I know Doge, LTC ETH and many other tokens after joining bitcointalk. I was amazed by the growth of cryptocurrencies. Some are growing and others are dieing.

June was intresting month for cryptos. In the first half there were further growths whereas in the second half something broke and many coin s fell down. What is intresting is that in the rank, which consists of the same cryptos so one can make notes and observations, the first places didn`t belong to the most knwon currencies such as bitcoin, litecoin, ripple, ethereum or dash. Less knwon crypto have won in June. Will they take over bitcoin and major altcoins? Situiation is uncertain to me.

http://bithub.pl/english/top-cryptocurrencies-in-july-2017/

In July we have seen correction of the whole market since a long time. Only 4 cryptocurrencies didn`t lose in price: Bitcoin, Litecoin, NEM and Dash. Market capitalization has fallen from $99,552 bln to $91,987 bln, it is 8%. Market cap of all other cryptocurrencies (excluding Bitcoin) has fallen from $58,756 bln to $44,599, it is 24%.

July`s winners are modest: The leader Bitcoin gave return rate of just 16%. The second Litecoin made us 7% richer and the third NEM only 3%.

Bitcoin is continueing to do great job! It has established new ATH and it seems that $3000 level is passed for good - at least in short term. Long term perspective seems to be more negative because we have been wittnessing growths for three years and nothing can always rise. There has to be price correction. However in short term we are very likely to see even $4000

Here are my top currencies:

1) Bitcoin
2) Ethereum
3) Litecoin
4) IOTA
5) Deep Onion
6) Waves
7) Steem
8) Lisk
9) Dogecoin
10) Civic

You forgot about DASH? Otherwise, I think your list is great. :)

DASH is totally one of the best and most important coins. I can`t understand why society is not aware of dash - very fee percent are interested in it. And yet it still is top 8 market cap so imagine what will happen when the rest of the mass people will finally get interested in dash ;)

If someona listened to me he could gain some money on Dash. It is now worth around $250 and was about $190 when I wrote about it. Dash is a good coin of course not the only one good coin. But it is worth taking a closer look on it

The best coin rather than bitcoin is EXPANSE.
Why? Its all because EXPANSE is always showing and doing great projects and we can see that this coin has a better future.

Well thank for your initiative, it is very helpful. It is a nice lecture and some good infos are always welcome. Regarding the top currency i think that we can talk about ethereum, i mean not even bitcoin came with such a value in such a short time. Yes, i know that at that point there was no step made in this direction but still it will gain power and, i the next two years it will be above 1000 $.

February was a month of uncertainty in the cryptocurrency market. This is confirmed by a small final capitalization change (though the fluctuations were bigger during the month), Bitcoin’s fall to around $ 6,000, nervous investor movements, fear of social media emerging, or poor performance of most cryptocurrencies.

In the link below, You can find summary of gain and loss of every coin. new coins have appeared compared to previous ranks. There are also comments of some experts and summary and recall of the most important events in February.

Are you sure you get a lot from this one?
The top coin I like to keep them and hopefully a nice day to have a lot of fun. ;D
