I'm watching. Would be somewhat nice to own a graded penny. However, considering the success of the latest knock-out raffle from minerjones, why not attempt one of those? These traditional ones have become somewhat boring IMO.

Actually, I just remembered, I asked Chris about that and there were 1000 of the error coins from that years run, but I think only 8 were ever sent in by him - I sent a few more I believe, and I think that one above may be one of them? Can't recall for sure. :P

I would enter, but my raffle-fu lately seems to just be robbing me of my bitcoins :P

If I remember correctly, the first batch of 1,000 coins were minted correctly, but without the requested (and paid for) ultra-thin protect finish to slow the natural discoloration of high quality copper. Only a few hundred of those first coins went out. The new order of 1,000 had the protective finish, but the mint accidentally minted them as the above example. Thus, the error coin.

Funnily, the same thing happened with our second order of the 2016 DAVE coins. Not only did the mint's sales rep apologize several times, but the head of the minting floor contacted me to apologize for the error as well. (For what it's worth, they PROMISED it wouldn't happen again, and I've already reminded them to be a bit more careful with the upcoming 2017 release.)

Of course, we never released the above info on the 2016 error coins. (I believe this is the first time.) I told my wife that if I weren't me, and if I didn't have all the emails from the mint employees apologizing for the mix-up, then I'd suspect it was done on purpose just to have an "error coin" and increase sales. It wasn't done on purpose, of course. And I hope that it doesn't happen again. Regardless, we're sold out of the 2016 DAVE coins, so I don't mind sharing the info now.

Anyway, I tend to ramble sometimes. Sorry. ;D

PS -- We did send five coins for grading, and all came back MS67. We sold them all. I'd love to own one, especially an MS68. (Fingers cross'd.)
