Title: Blockchain.info forgotten identifier
Post by: jdavenport on April 14, 2013, 05:42:34 PM
I made an account on this forum so I could get some assistance. I posted a support ticket but it has been 24 hours with no reply. I would send a PM to piuk who I think is the owner of blockchain from some browsing but I cannot with a new account. Please could someone who is admin at blockchain.info look up the address: 14eN94uuxZz39k6tqWszaAiHwF5x5Cv5eE and tell me my identifier. I need it as soon as possible.

Regards,

Joseph Davenport

How do you guys lose it? they provide you with a nick, plus the identifier, plus easy to backup your wallet.

You only need to have one post before you can send a PM.  You now have one post.  Try sending a PM to Piuk (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=17928) now.

Try sending a PM to Piuk (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=17928).  He's the local Blockchain.info expert.

The password is not recoverable.  The identifier is.

Please avoid frightening newbies with false information.  If you know what you are talking about, your advice is appreciated.  If you are just guessing, then you aren't helping and are just causing unnecessary concern.

Agreed.  If you are not maintaining a recent backup of the wallet file somewhere off the blockchain.info website, you are taking a HUGE risk.  What would you do if blockchain.info got shutdown today?  As soon as you get logged in, get a backup immediately.

Note to anyone/everyone who uses blockchain.info and hasn't gotten a wallet backup yet.  Please log into your blockchain.info wallet, and get a backup right now.  Don't procrastinate.  Don't wait.  It takes less than 60 seconds.  If blockchain.info were to be shutdown permanently an hour from now, you'll be happy you took my advice.  If blockchain.info is never shutdown, at least you'll have some peace of mind that you have access to your bitcoins.

Yeah but it doesn't appear in my outbox
Twice

If you're going to be a newbie, you could at least take a few seconds and read the thread titled "NEWBIE README" that is pinned to the top of this forum:

- snip -

you need 1 post to be able to send a PM

- snip -

Sent PMs are not saved by default, to change that:
Go to 'Profile'
Click 'Personal Message Options' (left side)
Check the box that says 'Save a copy of each Personal Message in my outbox by default.'
Click 'Change Profile'
It will save messages in your outbox after you send them from now on.

- snip -

So you sent it twice.  Piuk now has it in his inbox twice.  If you want sent PMs in your outbox, make the changes above before you send any more.

Looks like it's been 36 hours since Piuk last logged in to bitcointalk.org.

He hasn't posted anything since April 4.

Blockchain.info isn't a very big organization.  I suspect that with the recent surge in bitcoin popularity, the few employees they have are struggling to keep up with the volume of support they are encountering.

Hopefully they will respond to you soon.

If passed 7 days , just resend PM. Maybe now will work.

Please could someone who is admin at blockchain.info look up the address: 14eN94uuxZz39k6tqWszaAiHwF5x5Cv5eE and tell me my identifier. I need it as soon as possible.

It is not possible to lookup wallets by addresses. Please check your browser history and local storage to see if the identifier is logged anywhere. Did you not set an alias or add an email when you signed up?

Are you still able to look up wallet identifiers if you are given the password, or has the database gotten too big for that now?

Aslo, I've wondered, if two people happen to choose the same alias, how do you determine which identifier is the right one?

I'm also curious about this.  Given a small enough collection of wallets to try (narrowed by time of creation/last update), and a known password of one of them, can't you attempt decrypting each until you find one that decrypts and contains the address in question?  I would understand if you don't want to do this, but it sounds possible.  It's come up because there is another user here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=188505) who's lost their identifier.

I am somehow now in the same boat.  I'm making this post to enable the PM feature suggested above.
