Title: Can bitcointalk create it's own version of forum?
Post by: 4Y078 on January 27, 2017, 01:25:37 PM
Why use SMF when you have thousand's of donation coming in all the time? Why don't bitcointalk moderator or admin think of a new idea which might benefit to all it's users. This does not mean that SMF is buggy but i wonder why depend on some third party forum software? why not develop something which will perfectly suit bitcointalk forum.

This is just my opinion.

They already did this, the software is currently in beta: Epochtalk

It's already being created and It got funded as should be , IIRC It's 1.5 million USD , Beta took place a few months back but It definitely took more time then It was planned for . You could try the beta and report issues/bugs on the Github repository (https://github.com/epochtalk/epochtalk/) If you find any and for suggestions you could post them on the New forum Software  (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=167.0)section .

First of all, this topic has been discussed to death already. Just use the search functionality, there are several threads in meta about this (and that is where your thread belongs).

The main reason SMF is still used is that Theymos (the main admin) has made significant changes to the forum source code in order to make it more secure and allow for more functionality. To change other prewritten software requires redoing all of those changes and hoping that there are no new bugs introduced by making such modifications. The new forum software, Epochtalk, will have these changes baked into its code from the beginning, so there won't be that problem.

The forum moderators cannot change the forum's source code to add new functionality. We do suggest things to Theymos to add, but he rarely acts upon those suggestions.
