Just plugged in my XFX 7970 using 2 6 pin pcie power cables and it won't work!

Has anyone tried using the 6-8 pin pcie adapter cable and had good results? My psu is a 750w Thermaltake with only 2 6 pin pcie connectors. The 7970 has one 6 pin connector and one 8 pin connector.

Yes, i have used them. it will work for you. 

but if you plan on added another card, may i suggest a seasonic 750. it will have 4 pci 8 connectors out of the box

OK, gonna run and get one tomorrow.

If that doesn't work I'll have to buy a new PSU. If I get a new PSU then I might as well get one that will run 3 cards, so I will have to buy 2 more 7970s.....lol  ... then a second rig ... and ........ I might be better off just buying the dam coins, but that wouldn't be as much fun.

1x6 pin 1x 8 pin 2x 6 pin from different lines are both acceptable power solutions for the 7970

It says on the box that 2 6 pin should work, but all it does is make the fan spin. No signal to the monitor.

are they 2 differetn lines or is it like one line with one pcie and one coming off of it

PSU Model #:PS-W0117RU ... it is about 6 years old.

5v supply is a hair low.

Maybe I have a bad card?

XFX quality isn't the greatest right now.  There's a reason their cards are the only ones not sold out on NewEgg. :(

Got it from TD, they might be getting a RMA request soon.

Can't find a 6 to 8 pin adapter to try locally lol, had to order one should be here Friday. ^&*&&**(

Cost over 400 for the card, you'd think they could throw in a dam cable or 2 with it. Didn't even get a HDMI - DVI adapter, had to use an old one.

Finally got cgminer runnin and now I'm stuck with my 6450 ..... (~30Mh/s)

As most others have said, XFXs really aren't that great.  They usually don't include cables.  Their customer service is okay.  And their cards ... well...

My experience:

My first was a 6870 "double D".  I loved that card.  Quiet and cool.  Only sold because I upgraded.

Got a XFX 7970 Black Edition "open box" from NewEgg.  Only thing wrong with it was the fastener that holds the power cable for one the fans had popped off, so the cable was loose and hitting the fan when it ran.  A little twist tie fixed that for me.  (BTW - ever wonder how these things get by NewEgg QA?  It's because they don't have QA... they told me themselves.)

After a bit (a few months) it went kaput completely, computer wouldn't POST with it.

Opened a ticket with XFX, they responded relatively quickly, I got an RMA, shipped it to them, then had a replacement shipped back the day after they got.

After a few more months, one of the fans started to rattle.  Then it cleared up.  A few months later I started having heat problems, it would go up to 90s in a matter of minutes with fans at 100%.  Opened another ticket with XFX, and it took them a full week to finally get me an RMA.  Then after they got it, it took them a week to acknowledge it and send me a replacement.  Ended up selling that one "manufacturer refurb".

Then I had another 6870 (single fan) from them.  The reviews said they were loud and hot.  They were right.  I RMAs that one.

I'm trying my luck with another XFX black edition 7970 here soon, only because none other were available to buy. (Should arrive tomorrow.)  I figure I have a 50/50 chance of it working out of the box.  I wouldn't order an XFX from anywhere but NewEgg, because they have awesome return policies.

Right now I have an XFX 7850 "double D" in my main PC.  I'm happy with it so far.

All that said, I've never had a problem with an XFX rebates! :)

Well, if the adapter cable doesn't fix the problem I have to send it back.

I'm not going to spend a couple hundred on a new power supply just to see if that's the problem, it says it should work with 2 6 pin pcie. The voltages on the power supply are the same with both cards installed or with either one individually.

I don't know about the return policy at TD, I've never had to return anything before.

I have a weirdly similar problem, except with a new Sapphire 7970. I put 2 8pin PCI-E (yes it seems to require 2 8pin...) and when I boot up I get no signal. THe funny thing is my computer still boots (my mouse makes a sound when windows loads), so apparently it's not a problem that halts the boot, just refuses to display.

Running the card as a secondary card, and it shows up in hardware and mines just fine. Truly bizarre, never seen anything like this before. So maybe it is just some funky new 7970 stuff.

Which output are you using? On my card there are 2 DVI outputs and I have an old monitor so I need to user the DVI-VGA adapter. Only 1 of the 2 outputs will work with the VGA adapter.

Something to check if you're using an adapter.

I'm using an HDMI cable directly to/from my monitor.

Update: Got the cable(6 pin to 8 pin adapter) and it's workin great.

sounds like your 12 volt lines wont give enough amperage the 7970 takes alot of amps 36 or something stupid cant remember its down to the way it connects
on your psu check the 12v amps rating is will have a line like 22a or something if its too low thats your problem

Not sure about you.. but most of my circuit breakers are rated at 15A.  I can put five or six 7970s on one line before tripping it, so I doubt one 7970 takes 36A. :)

In other news, that "black edition" XFX 7970 arrived yesterday and was a dud.  On it's way back to NewEgg. :(

That sucks, I thought I'd be doing that today....got lucky I guess...for now.

Got it runnin at ~600mH/s at I=9 and temp ~72C.

Have a store here in sweden that sells refurbished cards and they always seem to have a lot of XFX ones, and I highly doubt they sell more XFX cards than for example sapphire. Got me a lot of cheap 58xx cards back in the day tho!

I think some power supplys have a single 12v rail thats capable of delivering xx amps and other supplies have multiple rails, each delivering a fraction of the total current available. Mine only has 2 PCIe outputs, so to put another card in here I need to get another PSU. Unless there's some other way around that.

More info on what PSU you have specifically?

I only saw "750w Thermaltake". But they have different model lines, and they are of various quality (ThermalTake Toughpower, awesome, ThermalTake TR2, total garbage in the garbage can, both 750W).
EDIT: There are tons of SATA/MOLEX -> PCIE converters, assuming your PSU is of quality to be able to deliver the amps needed.



Pretty sure my 7970 is going back to the shop. Tried it on 2 different machines, 2 different power supplies, 2 different monitors, 2 different connectors (HDMI and DVI) still get no screen of any kind. Computer still boots fine, still mines at nice speeds, but I'd still prefer one that actually displays something.

Definately send it back, if ya ever wanted to sell it later on it's a bonus if it will actually have an output that works lol.

Yeah, this PSU is pretty old but still workin, I've never had a problem with ThermalTake.
