Please, please disable animated user avatar images.

It is really distracting and makes reading topics difficult.

The point is that there's no way to "ignore" it, they're always moving

You can block individual avatars with Adblock Plus or disable avatars entirely in your profile settings.

Avatars are a form of expression, be it aggressive, defensive, or artistic, they allow forum users to present their feelings and ideas on topics of their choosing without actually having to write lengthy posts (a picture is worth a thousand words, so a 50 frame animation is worth 50,000). Animations are being misused here a lot for trolling, that's for sure, but if you're going to remove bad animations from a select few just because they distract a minority of users (or in this case, one), you might as well remove avatars in general, because I guarantee you I could come up with a slew of static-avatars that would annoy, distract and offend numerous individuals. Once those evil avatars are gone, then we'll have people asking "can we get this guy's name changed? His name is offensive and distracting!"

Slippery slope of internet democracy. Don't punish me for your own inability to focus, or others inabilities to provide thoughtful avatars.

Probably OP never been in forums where animated avatars are much larger and there is really huge animated signatures too. Many are like competing who got the most flashy and shocking one.

Disabling GIF animation in browser will help. I never did that in Firefox because of lack of necessarity but Opera have that option.

As long as it doesn't slow the forums down I'm OK with animation.

I have no problem with them either, I don't think this forum has lots of big flashy avatars or signatures. If it stays like this, I think they should stay, you can always dissable them by yourself.

Else we wouldn't have SgtMoth's avatar, and you can't be against his avatar  :P

I'm tempted to use a rapidly flashing avatar just to demonstrate how bad they are...

;D The risk is that you'll chase away all the serious users and all the lolcat fans will stay to admire your flashing avatar. And then they'll decide to forbid NON-animated avatars :)

I'll take the more libertarian stance and instead of trying to have it enforced I'l simply not help or respond to people with an annoying avatar.

Wouldn't the libertarian stance really be to just get over it, or block it yourself?

Refusing to help someone because of their decisions is more of a Dicko-anarchistic (pun alert) stance.

Both are valid options, blocking the annoying image, or ostracizing the owner of it, but given the ease of blocking the image, I'd recommend that as the "politic" thing to do.

Adblock is your friend, no matter what the crazy pro-advertising people say :D
