Title: Mining Monero with strictly only cpu's
Post by: TunerDude007 on February 01, 2017, 06:31:46 AM
Trying to do some research here and I was wondering if some of you would be so kind as to share with me on how I would go about building something similar to this?
https://gpushack.com/collections/gpushack/products/gpushack-128-core-pro

Also, looking at this page http://monerobechmarks.byethost5.com/?i=2    one can see how it may be something worth a try by setting up a few dual cpu motherboards. I have been able to price out some used Intel XEON E5-2650 on ebay for 50 bucks. And according to the monero benchmarks these cpu's should produce in and around 760H/s. I mean if this is the case then this would be pretty awesome no? Or then again perhaps I'm missing something here and if I am please enlighten me.....after all I am still in my rookie learning curves here.

Thanks in advance for sharing everyone.

firstly, there is 2x2650, so 1 2650 making around 380h/s.
secondly, as far as I know it is not profitable because of cost of MoBo, not CPU.
CPU mining is just an additional profit in case administration of GPU farms is not annoying enough for you)
Or in case you've bought top CPU for gaming but playing only few hours in day - you can partially return investments.

So whats inside that rig at gpushack? Looks like perhaps only cpu's no?

I wonder what cpu is inside that dell. 3600h/s on 128 core, so around 28 per core, and h/w is 3.6 so it is pretty good.

I've found used motherboards that can take 2 (dual) CPU's for really cheap. Are there any that can take more? I'm intrigued by gpushack's setup. Hopefully someone with more experience can help chime in....

That GPUShack unit looked pretty cool but with that price you have a long, long way until payout.... "Most CPU only" algos, like Cryptonight was, now are done with GPUs.

What about something like this? http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-ProLiant-591197-001-DL580-G7-CPU-Memory-Board-595661-002-583367-001/112172795118?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D20131003132420%26meid%3Dda66b483b0e647a5b820fe3f6e59c19c%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D5%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D141234184822

Can I make it work? Connecting 4 cpu's?

While you are at it, why dont you try to look for opteron server as well. G34 socket motherboards provide quad socket opteron (with max 16 core per cpu).

I am getting a couple of dual 1366 motherboard and try to get it to work. I can get it around 30-40$ a piece. It is from a 4 node c6100 dell.

Btw, I already knew it is 2011 socket server, but I wonder what cpu model since I could buy an e5-2670 for less than 100$.

Thing is I know jack shit about server power supply and how to get it to work.

take a cruz over to ebay and check out a few of the older server motherboards, its very often that you can find great deals even cheper then whay is offered in other places, and to couple the MB with cpu its  also a great place to find them!
