Title: Review: Custom ROM from Eliovp - RX480 Nitro+ 8GB (Samsung Memory) XMR ~850h/s
Post by: slim87 on February 02, 2017, 02:09:18 PM
Hi everyone,

I would like to make a little review about the Custom ROM from Eliovp for a Sapphire RX 480 Nitro+ 8GB with Samsung Memory.

On my machine I'm running the lates build of Windows 10 x64.

GPU Overview:
https://i.imgur.com/icxpjla.png

Power consume for my system (idle modus, no miner is running):
https://i.imgur.com/iLAWKeS.png

IMPORTANT: The rom is not free and it only makes sense to buy if you are the owner of at least 10 or more cards! For the price you have to contact Eliovp. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=236770 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=236770)

Stock Rom hashrate and power:
With the stock rom I get the following hash rate for Monero (2x Sapphire RX 480 Nitro+ 8GB):
https://i.imgur.com/zTqSiUP.png

The power consuming looks like that when the miner was running:
https://i.imgur.com/gcEPnvO.png

Custom Rom hashrate and power:
The hashrate for Monero with Eliovp's awesome Custom Rom (2x Sapphire RX 480 Nitro+ 8GB):
https://i.imgur.com/Uf27w8h.png

The power consum with the custom rom is almost the same, just a few w's more:
https://i.imgur.com/o9eZ1rX.png

Overall:
Really great ROM from Eliovp! It is stable as a rock on my Windows machine. I didn't had a singel crash during the last 5 days! Just really awesome. If you have a few rigs with a few GPU running it is definatly worth to ask for the price for this rom :) You will not find any public rom which is as good as the one from Eliovp. Please contact him and not me! Here you can send him a PM:  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=236770 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=236770)

Eliovp would have some other custom rom (for the same GPU) for a linux machine where you can get a hashrat up to 880 h/s for monero. On my Windows machine this wasn't stable enough on linux it will be :)

thanks for reading and any feedback is appreciated:)

best regards
slim

so a 2 card rig is giving you about 1700h  and around 600 watts correct?

btw i posted your screen shots

I get 5700h for 8 gpus on my pandaminer  which is 712.5h  a card x 8 = 5700   this is with stock rom  that pandaminer  gives.

I burn 950 watts.

Now  that is way better then you do.

But and here is a very big but  your rig pulls 290 watts at idle.  so WTF is your rig since 290 idle watts is massive.

My  4 card rigs are 110 watts at idle  your 2 card rig is 290 watts

@Eliovp

I have 28 of these cards

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814137024

MSI rx 470 4gb   do you have a rom for them?

@philipma1957  the "idle" is that high because I use the two cpu's for mining as well ;) Those are quite heavy cpu's and they consume a lot but I'm not talking here about the CPU. Its all about the GPU's  :D Idle time is just to show how much power two 480's are using.

So basicly you can say a RX480 Nitro+ 8GB consumes around 156,5w and generates a hashrate of 845-850 h/s for monero. (603w - 290 / 2). This is not bad but you cannot compare this to your panda miner! Total other GPU cards (MXM!). Ah and by the way, a panda miner is using around 390-400w in idle modues  :P

There's just no way a RX would be taking 300w here.

I get about 100w per RX for 740h/s with common bios mod + undervolt, 40w for intel skeleton. 640w~ for 4450h/s~ with basic mod, 5100h/s~ with more advanced for very small draw raise.
I do *way* better than pandaminer. The interest in pandaminer lies elsewhere.

If you're not going for easy deploy/stack. Custom rigs are much cheaper, more hash. I don't know how the MXM fare if/can once undervolted to save power. At stock the draw is pretty damn high.

Haha, yes Virosa, you can advertise as well :D

Anyhow,

The rom i gave him has no undervolt whatsoever. I didn't even touch that :p
So i'm not 100 but 200% sure that i can lower that powerdraw significantly :)

Still.. 850h stable as a rock   ;)

Know we have talked about it Eliovp...

just to clear up, what kind of watts/powerdraw could you lower it to? roughly?

Do you have some screen shot from the power consuming or could you make some? I guess you have 6 cards on your rig? With the panda miner (8 cards) I get 6500h/s~ and power consuming is around 930w. I don't think that you will get much better values here but if you can proof that I'm intrestest to know how you could do that exactly.

best regards

PS: Somebody are willing to share his claymore settings for ETH? Because I'm not mining this ;) THanks

Maybe i should start selling my own modded rooms for RX480 nitro 8GB cards ? :)

My cards bios are optimized for ETH mining not XMR , but reading this topic i was curious about my rigs xmr mining capability and gpu power draw reading from gpuz ;)

First.. 2 rx480 card setup and 290 watts idle power is not right at all ..
My 6-7 crads setup idle is around 120 watts
When you are talking about vga cards power draw and using GPUz you are only reading the gpu power draw , not any other components power needs on the card ... so the gpuz reading is not your rx480 card total power consumption

There is my numbers :) with modded bios, optimized for ETH mining not XMR ...

I have some time this weekend, i'll set up a 6x nitro rig as well (and i won't be using claymore)

I'll give it some effort this time  ;)

Again, (i did nothing regarding power.. but especially for you, i will..:) )

I have many of those Nitro rx 480 8 gb cards , i have a limited amps on 240 volts available to run all my mining rigs , so my first priority was when i created those roms a few months ago , is low power draw and high hash rate on ETH mining .

Just a side note ... all those cards running fine for weeks without any open cl hang or reboot during ETH mining ... I just tried XMR mining for a short time , and my rig rebooted itself , i checked the log file , but did not find any problem there .

So my roms are good for ETH , but not for XMR :)

If I have some time this weekend :) i might try to optimize my roms on one of my 6 Nitro cards rig to XMR mining , "I'll give it some effort" to push that 750h/s / cards hash rate to the upper 800 , with low power draw ;) "especially for you" :)   ------ just kidding ------

Damn those big ass screenshots :p

Yeah...i know .. i just wanted to make sure , you can see those numbers really clear  ;D :D ;) :)

I was honestly thinking: What is taking Wolf so long to reply..

My work does the talking, no need for screenshots, happy customers is enough for me :)
Which is nice, and why i do it. (and the money of course :p)

I see you got your samsung's also up in the 800 range, good job!

No hardware errors anymore?

My Hynix 4G does 820 stable, but here's the awesome part about it.
Core clock 1140, memory clock 2050 and a vddc offset of -69mV  8)
So 820h (even near 840 ), 29.5Mh Eth and 290 Zcash :)

Imagine if i kick that up to 1300+ core, mmmm  ;D

Yes, completely stable for a month.

I respect the work both of you do (Wolf0 & Eliovp), and you SHOULD get credit for it. I don't give out my timings for free either, I worked tens of hours on them, no matter the method.

I will post later this day when I get back home.

It's an RX480 (RX470 giving the same hash, CUs don't matter it seems, only core mhz and mem straps).
The test was done at high core clock. I usually keep at 815h/s using 55w on gpu-z (90w from the wall). Power is expensive where I live.

L.E. Samsung memory - 4gb.

thats horrible power usage since you are paying him ask for rom that does the same thing with a -100 core and -50 mem undervolt I would pay for that

its not really worth it to me to buy roms becase i have tons of difference cards brands , I just mod them myself

I overvolted my mem a bit, didnt see a draw difference, nor any visible difference in mem stability. I assumed it wasnt read by the i2c. I put -125mV on my Nitros for XMR, though some need -100 to -50mV wtf :S

The ref's quality are much more consistent.

I have 6 rx 470 nitro+ 8 Gb and all my card can do -96 mv.
For XMR 600 W for 4500 h/s in sgminer-gm so your result are not so great.

100h/card more than you isint great? My cards do -125mV, and its a really easy thing to mod in the bios, OP has stock voltage, surely you must understand what that entails. Editing the timings by hand, not that easy.

Sorry but i'm not a hater,
in your post you show this http://virosa.ethosdistro.com/ and no card doing 850 h/s.

What i see it's your card can do 750 h/s for 1180 core and 2150 for memory.
It's good but not great.

Since everyone's doing it, I'll showcase my 470 4G (Hynix) timings - see GPU 1: https://ottrbutt.com/tmp/xmrwolf-01222017.png

Haha, that took you a while to interact in this thread..

What is the actual vddc with -69mV?

You're confusing people, i'm not OP and i'm not Eliovp. I don't have his mod, i'm trying to do my own from scratch. *I* get under 100w per card, for 750h/s~ That is all i said and that is all i have at the moment. I could add the voltage offset in Eliovp/OP's mod in less than a minute, its not because OP didnt want/get it that a mod doing 850 is shit.

Run it stock at those clocks and run it modified, power usage is as good as the same yes.

QQ: Any idea on the actual powerdraw mate? Just trying to get the w/h ratio compared to copy pasting straps. I figured out how to do the custom straps, as I have no programing knowledge I will have to use excel to try and get shit done and spend half a day or more to get one strap out. Just trying to get some efficiency numbers down to see if its even worth it. Thanks a ton!

I would be interested in seeing the ETH/ETC hash rates for the Eliovp modified ROMs as well.

For those of you with them if you could post both that and your XMR hashrate with your GPU/MEM clock settings that would be really helpful for comparison purposes.

hey guys, and then especially mean eliovp and wlof0 :)

i have 6 sapphire rx 480 nitro+ 8gb cards, a 128gb ssd hard disk, a brand new corsair 1200w platinum power supply , Powered gpu risers and an old 4 pci slot motherboard. i run windows 10 ( not a bought version , i ativated it with an activator and disabled windows update ... ).
one of these days my h81 pro btc motherboard should arrive that i ordered.

The situation is the following , for 2 weeks now i am trying to get my rig ( 4 cards at the moment ) stable but its not working... i started of with claymore miner and with standard roms and no
over or undervolting and memory tweaking it runs stable... but i dont want 640 hash at a high power consumption.
so i started just by copying the 1750 straps to 2000 straps and i flashed all cards with the new bios , after a few hours my rig crashed ( windows crashed because off an amd driver crash accroding to "who crashed" ). and this still just by copying the 1750 straps to 2000... if i start undervolting or higher the mem from 2000 to 2150 then i get great results ( still with 1750 timings ) but it is absolutly NOT stable.

after all that misery with claymore miner i tried sgminer , it is a bit slower but it looks like it is more stable, anyway when i try it with 1750 straps again , the miner seems to block after several hours ( just the mining software , windows is not crashing this time ). so i wrote a script to restart the pc every 2 hours and that worked, but still not happy because i hear all kinds of story of peopel with great results and great power consumtion and that runs rock stable. So i tried and tried and tried , last bios i tried was V4 bios from " jukebox " , that looked promissing but still crashes on claymore miner and blocks in sgminer.

After all that trying i have problems with sgminer and claymore , my fans go nuts after an hour on sgminer and in claymore i just cant control the fanspeed or temperature target anymore. in claymore the fans always run 27 - 28 procent and temperature runs up to 85+ degrees...

So i stopped my miner , and i await my new motherboard ( asrock h81 pro btc ) , i will do a clean install of windows 10 ( still with activator ) and hope that with the new mobo it will run more stable. i will start again with just copying 1750 straps to 2000 and see... and i want to start with only 1 card... hopefully i can control fan speed and temperature again.

guys ( eliovp and wolf0 ) could you please tell me what to do , can you tell me that just copying 1750 timings to 2000 is not enough to run rock stable? if thats the case i will consider buying the rom ( i dont want the super 850 hashrate but 750 rock stable and low power consumption would be perfect for me ). so please respond or PM me , i am kinda desperate right now , i invested some money in something that does not really run at this moment. and i planning to buy more rx 480 if i get it right with ( hopefully ) your help.

thank you so much in advance

Was the rig stable prior to flashing?  Rigs should be stable at stock bios otherwise there is a rig issue that needs to be resolved.  Some cards don't take a flash as well as others.

Yes was stable before flashing... When I get new Mobo I will flash all my cards to stock BIOS and then run them all six for a while to be sure if they arestable... But then I want to start modding and that's the point when I will need help cause even if I run with standard BIOS and raise memory from 2000 to 2050 the rig crashes...

Pretty much, some cards can't take it but the odds of all cards not taking it are rare.  Most take programming and are stable about 9 out of 10 cards.

Ok when I have the mobo I do some more testing . Could it be that the old Mobo I am using right now gives problems ? And isn't it strange that when I try to change the memory from 2000 to 2100 on the stock BIOS with wattool the rig crashes? Is it really that difficult? I read tons of story's of other people the can easily adjust ... Ok most of them are eth miners... Is Monero that much different ? It would be nice to get a response of wolf0 or eliovp

Are you sure your 6 sapphire rx 480 nitro+ 8gb cards all have the same bios version ???
Did you checked the bios version for each cards before you flashed the modded bios ?
Did you modded your own bioses?
Did you modded one bios and flashed to all of your cards ?
Those sapphire rx 480 nitro+ 8gb cards have a different bios version:
113-2E3470U-S5X ,
113-2E3470U.X4L ,
113-2E3470U.X51 ,
113-2E3472U.053 ,

113-2E3470U.X5W ,
113-2E3472U.O5V,
113-2E3470U.S5S
... and a few more

This bios files are not interchangeable. If you are flashing a card with another bios version , your card might going to work , but can be very unstable during mining or gaming. ( reboots / blue screen / open cl hangs /driver fail errors  ... )

shit yes i did :(
i took the original bios from 1 card , modded it and put it in the other cards... i know i have a switch to go back to original bios but it could be that i accidently reflashed the original as well... not for all cards but how can i be sure?

if i modded my card , can i see in any way what the original bios was ?

what would u suggest? ( thx for the great tip , did not thaugt it could harm modding 1 rom and copy to all the rest

Im not saying this is the problem you are dealing with , but its worth a try :)

Use that " V bios switch " on your nitro's. Make sure you reset any tune you done on your cards with software (watttman , watttool , afterburnen )
Boot your computer up with only one nitro connected , after boot , just in case restart the pc ...
Use atiflash to check the bios version. Load your modded bios with atiflash and compare the 2 bios version . If both the same , you are good :) Just close atiflash dont hit "program" button.  If you see  different bios numbers u should restore your original bios...

(do this process with all six cards one by one)

thx for the help ! i will try that tomorrow ( i dont have the rig with me now ). But my only problem i could be facing now is that i have flashed over the original rom on some cards on both BIOS ... i know for modding its best to set the v switch towards the hdmi ports , so you could always go back to original by just setting v switch back again.  but what if my original bios is overwritten as well? then in atiflash my bios version will also show the wrong version ?

If u flashed ur  cards two bioses , then the atiflash not going to read the original bios version number :(
dont be panic , your problem might be something else... i hope.

I have a lot of original bios versions for those nitro+ cards , if you get ur new mobo , and the problem still exist after a fresh windows install , you can send me ur cards serial number and i can try match those numbers with my cards serial numbers , and send some bios files for you from those card what serial numbers close to urs . You might have to try a few ...

That's great men! I love the spirit around Monero, everybody helps eachother out. Love it! Tomorrow or beginning of next week I have the Mobo. And I will start figuring out what cards still have there original BIOS. I will do that by looking at each card 1 by one, starting to compete in atitflash and then do some basic test. I will set the memory of the original ( or what I think is original ) BIOS to 2100 instead of 2000... This in my opinion should run stable because no timings or what so ever are changed... No undervolting... If this is not running stable I will try one of your other original BIOS and do same test again and have a look if it's ok...

You think this is the good way to go?

what is extraordinary about 850h/s  ??? ??? ???

just default straps from 1750 do the same.

I've managed to have 950 h/s with samsung memory though, 8-gpu rig, 1.3 kWh
