Title: Have you ever bought games from Steam using Bitcoin? If so, for how much?
Post by: eternalgloom on February 03, 2017, 05:31:22 PM
I would like to know how many people here have bought something on Steam using Bitcoin as the payment method.
It would also be good to know how much Bitcoin (or equivalent in $ or €) you've spent in total since Steam has started accepting Bitcoin.

Also important to note is that you don't count your purchases of Steam codes through external services, only orders made through Steam itself.

The primary reason I'm asking is that I would like to have some sort of view on the popularity of the Bitcoin payment method on Steam. I was pretty bummed when Fiverr removed Bitcoin payments and I'm hoping that Bitcoin payments on Steam are a bit more popular.

Not doing a poll, since I'm asking multiple questions and polls are easier to cheat.
Looking forward to hearing your responses!

My own response:

I've used Bitcoin about 3 or 4 times for a Steam purchase and the combined value of the orders was around 45 euros in total.
I still use Paypal some of the time, but if it's possible, I usually pay with Bitcoin.

when I was a gamer, back when I had time and was younger wanted steam to accept bitcoin so that I can pay with bitcoin. when they started accepting bitcoin I was no longer a gamer :) at least no as much as before so I never bought anything there apart from one time buying a Dota2 international compendium to have extra features while watching the international tournaments. it was about $10.

Did you buy these on Steam itself or on an external website, since you said you bought giftcodes?

I have actually bought games on steam with bitcoin, it's a pretty pleasant experience and pretty much as simple as using a credit card though the only thing you have to wait on is for the confirmations.

Make sure to set the fee high if you want to get the game sometime within 20mins or so. The amount was around $30 or so.

Paypal isn't so popular in Serbia right now, but I've used bitcoin to buy Battlerite that's 20$.

That's good to know. I myself am thinking of buying some games on it, and in that way test the quality of the service, as I have never used steam before. First I have to check if there are good purchase options, of course, but the fact that this company is making available the possibility of buying using Bitcoin brings already an additional incentive for me to buy it through this platform.

I have bought games on Steam with bitcoins twice now. I had no problems.

Valve will be happy to know that I would not have bought them if I had to use some other method of payment.

Steam itself is a pretty good service, they've been around since forever and if you have your mind set on a particular game, than it's no problem to use their service.

I'm saying that because I would stay away from games that are still in alpha or beta stages, unless they have very good reviews already.
You can get refunds, but I'm not sure if you can get a refund in Bitcoin. If someone knows if it's possible, please share :)

Used it something like four or five times so far, maybe spent somewhere between $100 and $200 on games with it so far, I'd have to go back and check.

Overall it's a good system I'd say and there is very little I would like to change about it aside from maybe the time it takes to confirm a transaction and actually get the game, but I'm fairly patient.

I have bought a few games and a few DLC's troughSteam and the amount I spent in total is about 0.064 Bitcoins. Pretty much the only thing I use Bitcoin for is buying steam games, all my transactions are to Valve, only one was for buying games from some guy.

I bought the counter strike global offensive from steam through bitcoin itself and I don't try to use the other gateway or parties, all of the journeys is running for well. It looks like a lot of demand on the bitcoin method in steam payment. I think this will be so long.

Yeah I would also like to buy Starcraft 2 using Bitcoin, but as far as I know, it's not possible to buy Blizzard games with Bitcoin.
It might be a good time to send them some e-mails about that, maybe some community oriented effort? :)

Starcraft 2 is great but I think Starcraft 1 (broad wars) is still the best real time strategy game of all times.

As for buying games in steam, I bought a couple during the winter sale, I got Project Cars and Asseto Corsa to play with my Logitech racing wheel, pretty good games.

There are a lot of things that you can't do in starcraft 1, talking about general unit management, it's a real pain in the ass.
I like classic games like SC1, but imo, they've really improved it with SC2 :p You just have to stop living in the past (j/k)

I think its allowed now to buy steam games with bitcoin. I searched google and i see that they have partnered with bitpay which is a payment processor. Now you can buy steam games with bitcoin through it. Counter strike: Global Offensive is what i love to buy. I really love this game.

I've yet to buy any game on steam, be it with BTC or other.
But, this is only because the only game I used to like there was free to play.  ;D  So, I only had to use my BTC for in-game credits. (But that BTC had to go through a couple other payment processors, just to get converted to the appropriate one)

The only connection with BTC (this forum rather) and STEAM that I encountered was, occasionally there'd be some people giving away free keys (I think it was in the games and round). The one I got was for Dirt 3. Claimed it and all, but I've yet to play it though.

If BTC can now be used, then I'd probably try out the Left4Dead. It's a bit old, but good.

Everything went smoothly and fast, great experience.

ive bought games from steam, it was really easy and it didnt even require confirmations.. the money was loaded as soon as i sent the bitcoin..

it gives you credit in your wallet, you can use to buy anything. i put 50$ on it and i got a couple games.
they did charge me tax.. so if you are looking for a 9.99 game you gotta put 15$ on it..

no not 5$ for tax.. you can only do 5, 10, 25, and 50

so if you want something for 9.99 you cant just put 10$ on it and buy it.

why are you surprised about this?

Some games are worth buying, like mmos or some mobas, but most of singleplayer games could be torrented.

Support the gaming industry, buy games if you like them.

I have bought CS:GO with bitcoin payments from steam but got quite surprised to see they also have 30 days lock down period for bitcoin purchase also like with normal credit card payments to prevent chargebacks LOL.

I think i have paid almost 15$ for it but later on find out that you can purchase same game in cheap rate from other members or as gift.  :(

Do you think I've spent too much on game? ;D

Wait, I didn't know that Fivver has removed the Bitcoin payment on their system.

I bought two CS:GO Keys, so I bought a $5 Steam Wallet Code with BTC. It is my second thing bought with BTC. I bought GTA V and a few other games before, on Xbox One. The transaction went instantly completed (I chose to pay the default fees), and I got my money instantly in game.

Yes fivver have stopped accepting bitcoin payments from few months ago.

I prefer to buy steam keys and items from g2a like marketplace where we can get good discount. Why to pay more if we can get same thing at cheaper rate.

Yes, I have to agree with you on that, SC2 has so much more to offer. The extra Arcade type games built into it, is even more fun than

SC multiplayer. I like to buy strategy games and have bought the latest Rome & Stronghold. Here is a tutorial for people who wants

Humble Bundle didn't suspend the support for Bitcoin purchases, we can still pay the bundle with Bitcoin. But indeed on the recent bundle (the Namco Bundle) the Bitcoin payment has been disabled, but you can still pay with Bitcoin on another bundle.

Oh, I've seen a couple of bundles lately that didn't have Bitcoin payments.
It's also a real pain that you can't buy anything with Bitcoin in their store. Seems like a pretty half assed way to 'support' Bitcoin payments.

I'm hoping that they will expand their Bitcoin support to the whole website and folllow suit with Steam.

I earn bitcoins  just to buy games and in game items from Steam.
Signature Campaigns play an important role in helping me earn bitcoins and then use them.on steam
Not only steam , g2a also accepts Bitcoin . It is also a site which you can trust.
I have till now purchased cs go for $8 and it's ingame items worth $16.

I haven't tried it yet and upon checking I just realized you can buy steam games using bitcoins now. That's amazing and convenient. Maybe if I were to buy from steam using bitcoins, I would wait for the steam sale and look for the games I like. I usually like RPG games so that would be my choice for the games I would buy.

Nothing wrong with using external services like G2A to buy Steam codes, but keep in mind that Steam accepting Bitcoin has a much greater impact than those other services accepting it.
That's the reason why I'd personally try to buy more games using Bitcoin from Steam directly.

From g2a that's it.
And when it comes to any other thing like trading and stuff , I do it in steam itself

Those might just be the most expensive games you have bought in your life, if Bitcoin's price goes to the Moon later this year.  ::) ... I guess what

you are doing with your signature campaigns earnings is your business, but I would rather want to see people hoarding some of their coins to

reap the rewards when Bitcoin goes to the moon. I have a rule : Hoard 80% and spend 20% to stimulate the economy and to support companies

that accepts Bitcoin or they will stop doing it.  :D

How good that I do not depend on online games. All others can be downloaded for free via torrent. Why pay for "Resident Evil 7 Biohazard" if it is already cracked.
Do not waste your time on online games, is a drug! Dota 2 is the shit! (Satoshi Nakamoto ®)

Keep in mind that products based on Dollar makes Bitcoin change its value. If you buy a game worth 15$ as of now you have to pay .0152 BTC. It always change now the aim of people is to lessen the Bitcoin they will use for buying any product. The higher the value of Bitcoin the lesser Bitcoin you will pay for the product.

Yes i have bought a few games from steam and it was a really easy process. far easier than having to enter all the card details that you have to do when paying by CC.  i think the game i purchased was trove and escapists.  ;D

Good point and it's something that I've definitely taken advantage of when I'd bought Bitcoin for around 800 dollars and buying a game on Steam a few days later when the price went up again.
It's not much that you save on such low value purchases, but still pretty nice :)

It depends at what rate have you bought the bitcoins, if it is lower than the price at the moment of purchase then it is a benefit spending the bitcoins on the right place instead of trying to exchange in cash (and paying different fees) and then buying though paypal or credit card which is a long process reaching this.

Those might just be the most expensive games you have bought in your life, if Bitcoin's price goes to the Moon later this year.  ::) ... I guess what you are doing with your signature campaigns earnings is your business, but I would rather want to see people hoarding some of their coins to reap the rewards when Bitcoin goes to the moon. I have a rule : Hoard 80% and spend 20% to stimulate the economy and to support companies that accepts Bitcoin or they will stop doing it.  :D

Even better: if you spend bitcoins, buy more. Then you don't have to worry about the rising value.

That's what I do. I still have my initial investment even though I have spent a bunch of bitcoins at Steam and Purse.io over the last year or two.

I have tried several times using steam and I have tries to use my bitcoin but I always gets error and never get the chance to send my bitcoins to steam. I am confused and I got lost as to what will I do next or what step did I made a wrong move. But I keep on trying how to do it but I am afraid that when I send my bitcoins to steam it will go to waste and so I just used the ordinary method of purchasing games from steam. Hope I can use bitcoin to buy games in steam but I need a tutorial so it will go well.

Oh I see. I haven't tried it so I never had the chance to get to the part where I have to send bitcoins to steam. I'll check it out later and see if I would have any success. Though I see a lot of people in steam forum selling other stuff for bitcoins, like CS:GO keys for unlocking crates and other skins for sale using bitcoins.

Did not buy off-steam allot because steam's rates are extremely high compared to even smaller merchant websites offering steam products Let alone forum merchants selling items at a small rate compared to theirs. I did buy few games though and the BTC payment option was good before. did not see it for a while so not sure if they did take it down or not.

I wouldn't call Steam's rates extremely high, sure those websites that sell Steam codes usually sell them for less, but the difference isn't that big. Plus, by bying from Steam directly with Bitcoin, that's just another big company that has some incentive to keep offering Bitcoin payments.

And Steam also has a lot of sales which makes prices even better than on those other websites.

For the last 6 months or so, I have been buying Steam games and in-game items, most of which for CS:GO and Dota 2 but I have also bought several AAA releases on Steam and other stuff too. So upon doing a quick look on my account, I have spent almost $500 in bitcoin for games and in-game items up to now. It might be more expensive to buy it with bitcoins but it's more efficient and more easier to use bitcoins than CC (which I never added on my account in the first place.)

I never used bitcoin to buy games directly from steam, did the rate high or it's a fair rate? But if it's from othersite like humblebundle then i've used bitcoin on a few transactions probably about $60 in the last 6 month. I prefer to pay using other method beside bitcoin and save my bitcoin for tading or investment.

I bought steam games (Assassin's Creed 3) and i bought it for 12$ in bitcoin. Paying and getting the game is pretty easy and smooth and this is great for me and some of us because we can now use our bitcoin to buy different kind of things that we like. I hope soon, this kind of online business will expand and not only games but also other things will be offer and pay by bitcoin.

the funny thing is that when Steam didn't accept bitcoin, i was a gamer and wanted them to accept bitcoin, i even asked the support team multiple times and they always said we are considering it.
but when they finally added support for bitcoin payment, i was not much of a gamer anymore because of life and being busy in general. although i have topped off my steam wallet with some bitcoin and i think i still have balance there about 50 bucks remaining that i have not yet spent!

Buying Steam game with bitcoin is the most effective way to support Bitcoin and make it more popular to other people. I have bought many steam game by bitcoin and it is very convenient. However, the prices are not very cool. Bitcoin is more valuable than other kinds of payment but we have to pay the same price like them. For example, Bitcoin is worth +5%-10% preev in PayPal but in steam, the price of game in Bitcoin and Paypal are equal.

Aren't they charging the same prices with all payment methods? I don't see why they would need to lower the prices for purchases with Bitcoin.
I know that some companies do that, but just don't see it as a requirement.

I didn't know that so many people here use Steam. I mean it makes a little bit of sense as this being a computer forum and all.

I haven't purchased anything from steam though I purchased $1,000+ with BTC at Gamestop.

Well why not  :), in my country, the steam regional pricing is sooo much cheaper than price in $. The only time i purchased games from somewhere else is when humblebundle or bundlestar has a good bundle running or there's some glitch in other site. Steam is also easy to use and it's nice to organize your games into one application.

Most people here bought the digital version of the game, It's easier and simpler, you can just bought it and download it. Steam sell a lot of games, don't know the exact number. Currently i don't know merchant who sell phyical version in bitcoin.

Me too, I never tried buying one, I am not that kind of guy who puts money on my gaming, I just download good games online. And I dont really had that enough bitcoin to buy one. Though I love FPS games so if I had enough bitcoin I will buy one
