Title: Would this be a good way to keep GPU temps down?
Post by: Shaban on April 16, 2013, 04:38:46 PM
I just finished building 2 mining rigs with 3 7950's in each rig. I have 12 fans in the case and it's not enough, GPU temps still reach 100* so I turned them off.

I have them sitting in a fairly small room, if I get a window air-condition unit and leave it running in the room would that be a good way to keep them cool, or are there better ways? I can get the air-conditioner for about $20 so that wouldn't be a problem.

Yes...and look at building a open air rack for the cards and motherboard.

Take water cooling..

Take water cooling..

That's the plan eventually, but as for now I'm just going the cheap route lol

I was thinking about that, but if I can keep them cool and keep them in the case, it wouldn't be worth it.

My HAF 922 has 3 6970s and they all run around 80 - 85C. I think it is because I have a 200mm fan blowing air in the side of the case, basically right on the cards and then I have a 200mm fan that exhausts the hot air out of the top of the case. Maybe you could modify your case to put some 200mm fans in? Hope this helps.

Build an open air case, like in a milk crate.  They are efficient and cheap to build.

Take water cooling..

I'm interested in seeing how miners handle water cooling. There must be a custom set up since most out of the box water cooling kits only cover 1-2 GPU's max.

Take water cooling..

Noisy method. Try sealing your tower and filling it with an inert oil, it basically makes it a giant heatsink.

Some other guy tried this and it basically didn't work because he ended up needing truck engine radiator to dissipate the heat that built up in the oil.

Ofc custom setup. But pretty Easy to build and silent

Would the window air-conditioner keep it cool? If yes then I really don't need more than that, maybe eventually I'll switch to a water cooled set up

Also consider the running costs of using air con to cool your GPUs. It will increase the electricty costs somewhat.

AC plus riser cable for the middle graphic card  ;D

try a normal room fan and let it blow directly onto your cards
