Title: How loud are SP20s supposed to be?
Post by: NewBitcoinsminer on February 11, 2017, 07:28:40 PM
I started mine up today and it was like you had turned on a vacuum cleaner- heck, even my vacuum cleaner is quieter. I had to put it in the basement and powerline it in the end, but are these units supposed to be so loud? I had a hard time even being in the same room as the miner. At first I thought it was my PSU making the sound but I noticed a few seconds after I plugged in the power to the PSU the noise would take over, and air was running through the miner.

It's really not an issue for me as I can plop it in the garage or basement and it'll get much much more quiet, but it's just a tad bit annoying.

1. You should try to downclock them.
2. make sure it's not too hot in your mining room (make fresh air getting in)
3. You set the fan manually in the setup page.
4. Each chip will throttle at 120c, you want them in the 80-105 range if possible

downclock it to 1.2ths (.5g/ghs) and put it in a cold room (corridor is usually a good idea), the fan can then spin at 10-20%. These values are all aprox, it's been a long time since I sold my sp20s but whatever you do you won't be able to make it silent, good luck !

PS : if you're mining as a hobby you can do some extreme downclocking up to 800ghs (I think) and reduce power draw that much.

Lower power draw -> less power to dissipate -> less heat -> you can lower the fan percent some more

Good luck mate !

In my experience the SP20 was not quiet, but it was a LOT quieter than my Antminer S5 and Innosilicon A2 units - definitely LOW end for a vaccum cleaner on noise level.

cut the mesh screens out on the ends and it helps to quiet them down

Upgrade the fan with a Twister Storm -> http://www.enermax.co.uk/fans/twisterstorm/
It will need an external power supply, but, your SP20E will sound no more than an average tower and will still hash @ 1.4Th/s!
