Title: Secure my altcoin?
Post by: matmator on February 12, 2017, 03:03:33 PM

Hello ,

I have been mine for a few months already,

For the moment my etc / eth / sia are stored on my exchange platform

Etc / eth by kraken

Siacoin at polionex

Is my corners safe on these trading platforms?

Or is it more wise to store them on wallet installed in my hard drive?

cordially

Are all your coins store on these exchanges, although these exchanges are credible, still you should not put all your eggs in one basket,we already read a lot od good exchanges closing down, now if some of your coins are in your desktop wallet, you have full control of it's security,so just make it half each on one of them.

Yes all my pieces are stored on these platforms,

Faster to sell when price and high and redeem when price drops.

But I wonder if it was well secured.

Thank you for answering,

I'll think about storing a part on my wallet,

Myehtherwallet is good?

Short answer: You're coins aren't safe on exchanges.

Store your coins offline on your computer or on a harddrive.

The official websites and GITHUB's have the wallet you need for this purpose:

Ethereum: https://www.ethereum.org/
Ethereum Classic: https://ethereumclassic.github.io/
Siacoin: http://sia.tech/apps/

Although those places that you mentioned are really popular, I wouldn't store coins on there while thinking that they are totally safe from tampering. If you do install a altcoin wallet offline, encrypt your wallet ASAP.

I never had problems with these exchanges, but I would not leave my coins there for long. You need to understand that if you are not the only person with access to the private keys, your coins will not be secure enough. Even if you are a trader, I would recommend putting only a part of your coins into the exchanges.

You must see, mtgox, bitfinex. and I hope you will move your coin into the correct wallet of every coin. because you can lose your amount anytime.  Store them in your wallet to gain more securities.

No way they are safe in an exchange! Get them out as soon as possible. What if they get hacked or they go bankrupt ? Just install the wallets in your pc and transfer them there. If space is an issue, many of the "top" altcoins support lite clients where you don't need to install the whole blockchain in your computer and you just connect with a node each time you use it.

Poloniex is one of the well established trading platform in crypto currency, but you shouldn't put all you coin in that exchange sites, this is for the security of your coins. So if ever there's a problem with site at least your coin is safe in one storege you place whether windows qt, linux, whatever.

You don't own your coins if their are on an exchange. You should get an hardware wallet or keep them in the official client wallet.

Do not store the coins on the exchanges. Exchange held for trading and not for storage. These exchanges old and reliable but you never know.

I have been mine for a few months already,

what does this mean? have you been mining? you can't deposit mining reward into exchange address, they will reject it.

these exchanges are safe enough, although you should make sure to put a strong password on your account or if they have 2FA enable it.

but all of these can not protect you from the exchange getting hacked and running away!
if you can move to desktop wallets and cold storage.

If you do not have the private keys, the money is not yours. Any problem with the exchanges will make you lose money. They are holding on till the moment something goes wrong.

Never trust an exchange you never knows what's going to happen,we have seen mt gox and it could happen again, hold the big chunks of your coins in your desktop wallet, and keep the private key in a safe place ..

whenever you were considering storing your coins on an exchange you should remind yourself of these:
Bter.com hacked : 7170 bitcoin lost
Cryptsy hacked and ran away : 6 million dollar lost
bitfinex hacked : 65 million dollar lost

and the oldest one:
Mt Gox hacked : 460 million dollar lost.

Well I used jaxx.io, I think it is best for secure the ethereum classic,
in my experience I never find the problem and it can be used on smartphone,
it is very simple in my opinions.

not 100% secure, exchange cna be hacked quite easily its better if you secure them locally and keep a low amount on the exchange for selling or trading

If you are trading this coin daily then it is ok if you have kept coins in this exchanges if you are not a trader then better keep all coins in desktop wallet and when ever you are going to sell just transfer them to exchange and sell it, because no exchange can be told about when they will scam or anything happen in future.

Also, their are new hardware wallets coming out like the Trezor 2 and Jaxx Hardware Wallet. These should protect many of the popular alt coins.

I prefer storing my coins on my desktop I had a lot of pos coins and I stakes some of them to mint new coins, only store coins on exchange if you are going to trade it,but store and stake your coin if you want your coin to generate or mint new coins to your desktop it's more safer and secure.

I recently had a bad experience keeping my coins on an exchange - the other day I needed to do an exchange as quickly as possible unfortunately Kraken was completely down for over an hour and I lost a significant amount of money.

I don't normally keep my coins on an exchange - but did in this instance in anticipation of this particular trade.

In general hardware wallets are a great choice - although it can be difficult with a rather large portfolio of alts. I personally keep my coins on an encrypted CentOS laptop, which has been locked down with iptables to only allow outbound communication with the relevant networks.

^ Might be overkill though - depends on how much you are looking to secure.

For ethereum classic, I can not install the mist wallet on pc, error.

any error has a reason and can be fixed, consult the wallet creator to find a fix. it may even have a simple solution. the links are usually in the site where you download the wallet.

I can use the web wallet?
I saw who has jax,Which one is best?

as long as you are not the one holding the private keys, or generating them with a legit wallet you are taking risks.
also it is always preferred that if you want to store large amounts always do it in a cold storage (generating the wallet/keys offline)

Most people here are saying the right thing related to this question and storing them on exchange wallets arent safe at all as we all know even those top or reputable exchange sites have the risk of getting hacked which means are coins arent safe too and also you could always store it on your desktop wallet its the most better option.
