Being close to a fire is never a good thing but... they really were not that close and the explosion was amazingly powerful.  There have been fires I have been closer too then that and I just stayed and watched too.   I know better now.

Recalling my own high-school education, No, I don't believe it was ever mentioned. In fact, almost all of organic chemistry was glossed over. I suppose the last thing a government school wants to teach it's students is how things go "BOOM." Dangerous knowledge, that.

Actually, I did this one back in '79 while on vacation. I was outside the walls of the Alamo and had to take a piss really bad, so I hunted me a bush. With my back to the bush, I pissed on the Alamo, but it never crossed my mind then, nor now, as being disrespectful. I just couldn't make it to the car dealership across the street.
