Title: Credit card shaped 16GB USB sticks with engraved Bitcoin logo (Batch 1)
Post by: Teka on April 18, 2013, 03:30:32 PM
Hi,

This an official announcement of the "Credit card shaped 16GB USB sticks with engraved Bitcoin logo" project. This usb stick is now available for pre-orders. I need to sell at least 24 units otherwise the project has to be cancelled. I'm accepting bitcoin and paypal as a form of payment. This usb stick can store:

7618 photos
or 3809 MP3s
or 30.47 feature length films in Mpeg format

The 16GB is also great if you want to install a linux operating system on it.Think of it as a usb stick in the shape of a credit card.

The USB Card pushes the boundaries of slim design. It’s just 2.60mm thick but it still features 16GB of solid state memory. The stunning metallic finish presents a crisp and professional image and, of course, the USB Card features engraved bitcoin logo. The drives are made using A grade NAND components from Hynix, Toshiba or Samsung and are made out of 100% recycled aluminium (where applicable). The card comes with a 10 year warranty as  a standard.

http://198.199.70.251/small/WP_000153.jpg
http://198.199.70.251/small/WP_000155.jpg

The price for the usb card is 0.3BTC
UK Customers will get the item shipped by Royal Mail for free!
USA,Canada Customers and EU will get the item shipped by Royal Mail Airsure and will have to pay around 0.15BTC.

The warranty does not cover the repair or exchange of products resulting from misuse, accident, modification, unsuitable physical or operating environment, incorrect maintenance by yourself, or failure caused by a product for which Teka is not responsible.Warranty becomes void if equipment is modified, incorrectly used, damaged by accident or neglect, or if any parts are improperly installed or replaced by the user.

How do I pre-order the card?

Post a reply to this topic with the amount of cards you would like to purchase and the form of payment you will be using.

I guess this runs the standad Bitcoin client which would be why you need 16GB for syncing?

The logo is engraved on the usb stick. Also due to size and value of the order the shipping price has to go up to 0.2BTC for 10 orders. This mainly because your order is worth nearly £200.

The mock design has been updated.
Sorry but it was never mentioned that the design would be altered. The legend is simply ugly and makes the circle look out of round. I vote for the simple design with bitcoin logo only.

What makes you think the Bitcoin-Qt client wont work? You can test with every USB stick that can store the blockchain..
It just has to be installed / mounted as portable and used with custom data-directory in options or configuration file..

I've yet to try but could one feesibly install bitcoin/ltc etc on a truecrypt version of this thing?

Ideally I'd love to see a self contained bootable/secured linux distro with copy of all the big wallet's pre installed as well as configured to surf the tor network.

Unsure how hard a custom distro or how secure it would be, having a heck of a time getting the litecoin and other wallets to install to linux.

Thanks!

PS. Did you make your 50 quota?

The units have been manufactured and are being shipped out to me so they will probably arrive on Wednesday. If you have a any doubts about me not being legit you could always ask Tinua (His Order has been fulfilled and he has received 25 working units) . There were simply no updates to give out until today.

It is a USB device and should be Version 2.0 - you can see the contact so it aint 3.0 . And there are no "speed classes" - Version 2.0 varies, more on e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Serial_Bus ; the speed data of this device was not communicated and was not subject to this product as it is IMHO more a matter of design.

By the way I cannot imagine a usb 3.0 device to be this thin because all connectors I can find are quite well shielded and thus not thin enough.

I personally think of putting several preconfigured wallet software on these ones  with additional information to give away to beginners (bitcoin-qt without wallet.dat but with a preloaded blockchain signed by me, brainwallet.org and bitaddress.org, vanitygen as "offline files", list of shops, links and some tutorials/howtos).

The memory will have a read/write limitation, regardless of which bus (USB) is being used.
USB2.0 has a max. data rate of around 60MB/s, but the type of memory inside the stick (I'm not sure what is being used) will have a performance limit.
If, for example, an SD card at class 10 is used, then the maximum write speed will be 10MB/s, regardless of the fact USB2.0 can hand a bandwidth of 60MB/s.

Sounds good, it would make a nice, small, gift.

I like to remaster my own live Linux distributions, so I'm thinking about putting a couple of them on their for personal/computer repair use, along with a version of Linux for using an offline Armory wallet.

Hey everyone.

Units have been shipped out. The EU and US units were shipped out via Airsure and depending on custom they should arrive within 2-7 working days. The UK units were shipped out via Royal Mail 1st class. I don't know about the class of the cards but I will test them out tomorrow and give you an estimate of what speeds you should expect.  If you need any more information send me a pm or reply to this topic.

Thanks,

Teka

edit: Bulk orders above 25 units are still accepted.

Read/Write speeds if any one is interested (using FAT32):

Read:  26.20 MB/sec
Write: 6.3 MB/s

Code:
READ

hdparm -t /dev/sdc
Timing buffered disk reads:  80 MB in  3.05 seconds =  26.20 MB/sec
Timing cached reads:   15096 MB in  2.00 seconds = 7554.25 MB/sec

Code:
WRITE

dd if=/dev/zero of=speedFile bs=1M count=1024 conv=fdatasync,notrunc
1024+0 records in
1024+0 records out
1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 169.493 s, 6.3 MB/s

So I'd guess from a quick test that these are class 6 cards- pretty good :)

Thanks for the feedback Craynon and Openyoureyes.

Just some feedback on the thread:
The cards arrived yesterday in Germany, redelivery in the country also is done. AFAIK no problems at all.
Tested one of them for the speed question with H2testw v1.4:
Code:
write: 5,79 MByte/s
read: 18,1 MByte/s
