Title: [FS] All aluminum open air cases (now sized for 20-inch box fan mounting)
Post by: Spotswood on April 18, 2013, 08:27:32 PM
I've been building  open air "trays" (http://spotswoodcomputercases.com/wp/?page_id=892) for mining rigs for a while now i.e. where GPUs are mounted "floating"/above the motherboard via ribbon cables.

Scroll down through this thread.  Or just checkout my website: Spotswood Computer Cases (http://spotswoodcomputercases.com/wp/?page_id=892).

Here's the "mining tray":

http://i715.photobucket.com/albums/ww153/Spotswood_/MB%20Tray%20for%20Benchers/Final%20Pics/MiningTrayA-640_zpse5e76a09.jpg

Here's what it looks like with an ATX motherboard mounted (not included):

http://i715.photobucket.com/albums/ww153/Spotswood_/MB%20Tray%20for%20Benchers/Final%20Pics/MiningTrayAwMB-640_zps137bc011.jpg

Two standard ATX PSUs can be mounted inside that open area on the left-hand side of the tray.

These can be stacked with an optional set of extra posts for $5.

Price does not include USPS/UPS shipping charge (from New Hampshire, USA).

PayPal only.

I just ordered a custom 4-rig mining tray; posting here as a record for our transaction.
Custom 4-tray, 3-tier Mining rig: $315 on order, actual shipping costs on delivery via PayPal

Spotswood was able to make my design description into a practical product with incredible speed. Looking forward to seeing the finished product!

Does this design require the use of a riser cable?

Edit - nevermind, I think this answers my question...

...where GPUs are mounted "floating"/above the motherboard via ribbon cables.

The use of risers/ribbon cables are not required.  You can use this like a "normal" motherboard tray by simply not attaching the "floating GPU beam" and adjusting the height of the expansion card beam.

This seems quite nice, but I've always been weary of using open-air cases. They're too susceptible to damage from being dropped, dropping something on them, or other things. (Cats) IMO, it's best to keep those expensive components within a regular case for their protection.

After-all, you can get equally good if not better cooling by using some of those huge yet silent fans that push so much air that they essentially constantly replace all of the air inside the case. :P

That's just me, though.

Yeah, running naked isn't for everyone.   ;)   Its not easy to setup a rig with ribbon cables in a conventional case.

I will probably upload more pics to it soon; the server room/electronics workshop I've had built for mining and other mad-scientisty things is just about complete; it will be easier to take pictures of it there. I'm also about to add a second 4-mobo rig to the stack.

$75USD plus actual UPS shipping charge from NH.

PayPal only.

(I will soon be offering a legit dual PSU mining tray, with the PSUs stacked on the wide side).

I would always recommend using a switch.

FWIW, no one has ever asked me about mounting a switch to one of these.

FYI, I use a small philips on one to my machines to start it up, never had any problems with it that way, but if you can pull a switch off an old machine that would be ideal.

Also, just got my case with elevated GPU brackets yesterday. Took about 5 minutes to setup and another 30 to get the new setup booted up and mining. For anyone still GPU mining, this is a great tech case made from quality parts. Definitely worth the cost so you're able to safely run between five and eight GPUs.

ALL of the wiring was routed under the case. Made it look very clean.

I had a base that I made my self as well. Unfortunately I had made it out of untreated wood, left it close to a window that was open when we had a huge rain storm and even though it didnt get wet, it still absorbed a lot of moisture and began to bow. Hence, why I bought this ultra nice unit from Spotswood!

These trays are targeted for individuals who might not be comfortable with installing their mining rig in a DIY case, or for those who prefer to use a high-quality manufactured (no modifications/additions are required for use), stackable, open-air case that can hold two PSUs and six widely-spaced suspended graphics cards, that could eventually be easily re-sold as a test bench.   ;D

Mining trays can now be purchased with extra tall posts so two trays can be stacked at the perfect height in order to be cooled by a standard 20-inch box fan.

I'm wondering though if you would be willing to design a custom case for the Bitfury ASIC mining rigs? The mining trays (actually, all of my trays built from 15mm square extrusions) now ship with plastic tabs to fasten the PSUs directly to the extrusion:

what is the point of the plastic end caps?  is it to replace the screws as an alternative?  For the large atx mining tray pictured on your website, does it come with the gpu support beams or does it have to be purchased separately?

The end caps are decorative, but I have them on all of the posts on my tray to prevent scratching my arms.

The GPU support beam is included with the mining tray:

How much for the prototype?  Also what are the dimensions of it?

I am looking for 3 custom racks to purchase probably in 2 weeks, I like your prototype.  I am a serious buyer, I am just stocking up on the rest of the GPU's first, plus it depends on your price.

Let me know Thanks

Most high end PSUs are top fan built, would mounting on their side not be a better idea?
Stacking them like this would restrict flow wouldn't it?

I'd like to buy one of these, double stack (for two mother board set's.

And the leg's for the fan. When your ready to sell again please let me know!!

Do you sell these any more? I emailed you in Janurary and you told me I was approxmiately 4 weeks away on the waiting line. It's been over eight weeks now and you don't reply to any of my messages.

I emailed you twice a few weeks ago. I PM'd you here about a week ago.

I am building these as fast as I can.  I have a new version coming out that will help reduce manufacturing time.

I will be in touch.

How do you screw the Graphics cards in?

How do you screw the Graphics cards in?

The current version has a milled piece of extrusion:

Previously, two pieces of extrusion were used like a clamp:

Selling a couple of these... Never used... one was opened..

Would rather sell as a pair - spotswood included all the screws and stuff for both combined and I don't want to split them up

$120 for both OBO (in BTC) (I paid something like $110 each i believe)

AS IS - no returns - please check pics, what you see is what you get (I can't tell if there is a missing screw or something)

Updated the design of the deep mining tray with optional extra extrusions for mounting GPUs vertically:
