Title: Media EchoChamber: The guy who lost $500,000 of BTC
Post by: niemivh on June 16, 2011, 07:41:20 PM
I'm really tired of the news feeds lately.  There is a giant echo chamber out there right now about the $500k stolen story.

First of all, do we know that this is a legit story? How can we verify this?

What are the details of it?

Just seems like the usual MO that since the media has something damning to run against it they are all parroting each other.  But none of these stories ever have any details... do the details exist?

On a side note, it is interesting to see the Economist do an about-face with their latest hit-piece.  One of their project mockingbird editors must have told someone to write that.

I heard that it came from some forum about Bitcoins... not sure where though... no way to know if it's legit. Someone named "allinvain".

LoL it's this forum.

The story sounds legit I have read the thread.  But of course there is no 100% proof BUT there is some evidence of 25,000 BTC moves so...

Bad press is still press....I think it has its pros and cons but mostly pros IMO.

I think the real story is that it's possible for someone to amass a fortune in Bitcoins.  Some might even say that it's possible for "a fool" to amass a fortune in Bitcoins.  (I prefer to think of him as an unfortunate soul, because it could have easily happened to many different people.)

Look at how the downloads of Bitcoin have climbed since the story broke:

http://sourceforge.net/project/stats/?group_id=244765&ugn=bitcoin&type=&mode=60day
(scroll down for the stats)

The highest amount of daily downloads in June was June 8, 13.6K, until yesterday 14,8K.  Today well on it's way to a new high.

Originally I was hesitant to get involved with Bitcoin because I thought it was some cool project that nobody would really notice or care about. I think that all press is good press, although some is obviously far better than others.

Bad press is more interesting to read (when you're unbiased), so it makes sense that it would dominate.

In breaking news 2.6 million pounds has been stolen from a train in the UK. Please STOP using fiat currency immediately!
