Title: SHA-1 got cracked by Google - Does it affect the PF gambling sites in any way ?
Post by: erpbridge on February 24, 2017, 01:51:39 AM
Today's big news was that Google cracked SHA-1 which has been an industry standard encryption that has been used on a lot of sites. Didn't the provably fair sites also use the same encryption ? Can these sites be vulnerable to the attack ?

No, they use SHA-2

Reference for users unfamiliar with the shattered attack -> http://shattered.io/

Quoting from the Q&A:
"We hope our practical attack on SHA-1 will increase awareness and convince the industry to quickly move to safer alteratives, such as SHA-256."

Like Lutpin said gambling sites probably don't use the SHA-1 encryption. As a matter of fact most of the websites stopped using it a few years back as well. it has always been known that it is crackable and google just confirmed that. SHA-1 is just a weak hashing algorithm. I think this article discusses a little about that: https://dennisforbes.ca/index.php/2016/07/13/provably-fair-gaming/
