Title: Inquiry
Post by: Smiketroll99 on February 24, 2017, 06:24:48 PM
Yesterday I downloaded Bitcoin core but under the wallet appears a message with a bar saying this "4 years and 14 weeks ago"
I haven't been able to use it because of the sync.
HELP PLS
I don't know what to do  :-[

Bitcoin core needs to sync by downloading the whole blockchain which is about 100 GB.
- Let it sync... the time it takes depends on your internet speed and your computing power.
- Or use an SPV wallet if you have problems. In that case I recommend Electrum. It will need to download only 35 MB for syncing. Although you will lose the benefits of running a Full Node.

Starting an irrelevant poll in the beginners and help thread regarding the length of time required to sync the blockchain was definitely not the thing to do.

How long it takes depends on your bandwidth and how many peers you get to share the blockchain.
You can wait, it can take several days.

You won't need to wait 4 years but depends on your hardware... quite long time, couple days at least.
But... you could also download SPV client like multibit that just downloads headers of whole blockchain so it takes like 100 times faster to sync... u for personal usage need only that :)

Yeah Smiketroll99,

you just need to wait for your Bitcoin Client to load the whole Blockchain and once you have it all synced up then you could send whatever amount of Bitcoins that you have leftover inside your wallet.

Make sure that you have enough Bitcoins within your wallet to cover the transaction fee (around 0.0001 BTC) so you could actually send your coins.

Also if you are downloading Blockchain with your Bitcoin Client then you may want to make sure that you have enough space on your computer (I think the size of Blockchain right now is at 103,773 MB, so that's around 103.773 GB).

Visit Blockchain.info to see the current Blockchain size:

Yes, and no. How to tell new investors that there is some hundred megabytes of blockchain to download, before beeing capable of doing anything at all? This system cannot scale.
SPV wallets stepping up into beeing more usefull with every day.

Well, if you have a really slow computer then I could see why downloading the whole Bitcoin Blockchain would require 3+ days. Not much people are using Dial-up internet these days and the internet speeds have improved, so I would say that for the average computer user that downloads via Wifi the whole Blockchain download will get completed in 4 days.

(Downloading a PC video game with a torrent program that is around 6.70 GB with Wifi may take around 1.2 days with fluctuations of low to moderate speeds).

Downloading Bitcoins Blockchain could get completed within a day with a fully functional Ethernet cord + 10 mb per second on a non-outdated computer (Based on the standard of this new generation).
