Title: Best way to sound proof a room for mining?
Post by: SA Bitcoin Brothers on February 28, 2017, 07:10:13 AM
I need some help

The egg shape Acoustic Sound Treatment?
Sound proof they use for cars?

Please advise what you guys are using? I need to sound proof a room before my S9s arrive.

Does the thickness or/and shape of the foam help?

Thank you!

Yes, the thickness and the shape matters big time. There is no way to achieve a good sound proofing with a thin material.

Here's one of the best shapes IMO:

And something like this is also good:

That was what I was thinking. I'll give it a try. Can I just cover the windows, door and maby sealing. Or the whole room?

Make sure the room has some kind of ventilation, if you seal it all up like that you will kill your miners in short order due to heat.

I just partially surround my newer miners with foam and let them be in a spot where air can get in but it's still being surrounded by the acoustic foam. Soundproof server racks work too depending on how big the racks are.

Best way to sound proof your miners is to sell your Antminers and get some GPUs.

If you are willing to risk the adventurous path you could consider egg trays. Those are bejond "cheap" BUT not exactly that sort of fire resistant material. And your rig WILL puff some smoke one day. Pronounce dust ignition.
Top row on shelf can be plastic water bottles that melt & flow out if something bad happens. There are Liquid Packaging Plastic Bags of higher capacity and lower melting point.

I shouldn't really give hints on dirt cheap DIY stuff anymore.

You can go to HVAC supply house & get 10ftx4ft sheets of 1inch or 1 1/2inch thick fiber board for about $35-50 each.

Get an adhesive spray & fabric of your choice (the more coarse, loose knit, the fabric the more sound is absorbed) & make sound proof panels in any size or shape you want  8)

The fabric is applied to the fiber side not the aluminized side, you wrap the fabric round the ends & staple the fabric to the aluminized side.

When I was younger I used to grab these out of shops and use them in my garage with my teen music band, aaahhhh time flies :D

I haven't done mining before but as a musician, I know how annoying soundproofing can be.  You could try soundproofing foam (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pro-Acoustic-Foam-Wedge-Treatment/dp/B006I1J25E/ref=pd_sim_201_3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=QTB0V9QHENFZAWH4N8EN) which is pretty cheap or, if you're more serious (e.g. you have A LOT of miners), you could always try getting the room properly soundproofed by professionals, but this could often cost over $10,000 unless you do it yourself.  If you're any good at handywork you could try setting up two walls and filling the gap with sand, which is a more traditional way of doing it.

In my opinion, unless you have serious reasons, there's no need to spend such money for soundproofing a room. Just go with the eggs + smoke sensor (in case of fire) ;D

Couldn't agree more. Soundproofing walls with expensive foam may be overkill.  Have you considered acoustic mats - the kind you put under hardwood floors? This stuff is cheap, easy to "staple" to the wall and can be found in any hardware/DIY store that sells floors/parquet.

The cheap foam or egg carton can always be added if needed afterwards..

I think there are 2 parts to this.  One is to block the reflected sound from bouncing around.  Egg crate type stuff, thick pile carpet, blankets, acoustic ceiling tile, something like that.  The other part is to have something sound won't go through, for that something dense like maybe 3/4" particle board.  Part of the sound is vibration so you want something that isn't easily moved.  Think inertia.  So heavy and dense with a soft lining.  But allow for ventilation.
