Title: "Go" vs "Chess"
Post by: Michel de Montaigne on February 28, 2017, 11:37:36 AM
I like to play chess. But "Go" has more probabilities than chess. "Go" is a delightful strategy game like chess.

Which is your favorite?

Go is an intelligence game like chess. This video briefly explain what it was like.
It is very simple to learn but takes some time to master.

Go is a strategy game, if memory serves me right is a game where you try to conquer as much space as possible and circle your opponent with your pieces.

I never had seen this "Go" game before. It seems like an interesting game but I don't think I'd have fun playing it.
Go seems to have a lot of possibilities but that also make the game longer and maybe boring. I like Chess more, because it can sometimes be ended quickly.
I'm still going to see more about Go though.

Yes, I think chess is more enjoyable. "Go" is not as pleasant as chess even though it has much more possibilities. Each stone in the chess game has a different meaning and power. This makes the game more meaningful and enjoyable. All the pieces in the "Go" game have the same characteristics. I prefer chess.

I played both. But my favorite is Go.
Go is a game I love as a philosophy. Also the rules of the game can always change. You can lose what you think you earned at a time. It could be the exact opposite. You can win a game you think you lost.

Which is your favorite?

Number of probabilities is a poor way to evaluate a game. In chess and go, a huge number of possibilities can be eliminated immediately. So the actual reasonable probabilities change dramatically. The same is true of poker.

This thread should have a poll.  ::)

Honestly, I'd say Go > Chess. However, I'd prefer Crazyhouse Chess over Go.

Also, shout out to other Go Gophers ;)

I never has a chance to play go, is that chinese checkers? I always see it and watch it on television but I can't understand it. I love chess so much it helps my focus skills and enhances my memory.

No. Go is entirely different than Chinese Checkers. Go is pretty straight forward. Drop tiles to surround space / enemies. Don't get surrounded yourself.

I prefer chess because by playing chess our brains are made to think of strategies to defeat the opponent.

Go is the exact same. Except Go has more strategy than chess.

Maybe chess is better, also a damn traditional game.

Go predates Chess by nearly 1000 years. Go is the traditional game.

Eh. Maybe, but Go still has more moves. For example, there is something like 10 opening moves in Chess (8 pawns + 2 knights), with a 19x19 grid (standard rules), that's 361 opening moves. Sure, a 100 to 200 of those moves aren't the greatest (counter-meta), but it's still hundreds more moves than Chess.

Never actually played GO before but Chess is a classic

Meh, Go is more of a classic than Chess. I suppose it depends on where you were born, but Go does predate Chess by nearly a millennium.

You've just paraphrased exactly what I said. Number of possible moves creates the probability. There are 20 opening moves in chess. After each move, the number of possible moves increases (whereas in Go, the number of possible moves decreases with each move). After just 4 moves in chess (1 by each side), there are more than 250 billion possible positions. I don't know if 100 initial moves are really reasonable in Go, probably it is much less than this? But even if not, both chess and Go are practically infinite. One could imagine a contrived game with a much larger number of possible moves that isn't going to be more complex than these games.

As an example: someone created an abstract game called Arimaa that has 64,000,000 possible opening set-ups. This dwarfs Go. Is that game superior to Go (and chess), and more complex?

So using number of possible moves is a poor way to look at game complexity, or game superiority.

Nope. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AlphaGo

Which is why I said "possible" dominance. AlphaGo doesn't win all the time and can be beat even though it is still improving. In chess every single possible combination of a game has already been mapped and a computer cannot lose.

Not quite. AlphaGo scales with CPU. With a datacenter behind it, it'd be unbeatable.

I think you are mixing up your games. Ke Jie lost all 3 games to AlphaGo. He is universally regarded as the best player in the world. Besides, AlphaGo released 30 training games it played. The top human players said its play was beyond anything they had ever seen. Even Kasparov beat Deep Blue in one of the games.

So I think you mean that you prefer chess?

chess is a very addictive process, a positive drug for children. Even when it is played online, it is much better than video games or television. and the other outstanding thing about chess is it's so cheap, so it can really help children in areas that are economically disadvantaged

Go has more complexity - the number of possible games is immense with such a large board - but it is not as interesting as chess.  It takes strategy but it is all the same.

Now chess has different pieces that do different things and while it has a smaller board the mechanics and strategy are way more interesting and diverse.
