Title: Monero Madness
Post by: phishead on March 04, 2017, 04:31:23 AM
Alright guys... You know what time it is...

It's time for...

MONERO MADNESS!!!

https://i.imgur.com/qswO0HC.gif?noredirect

Yes, you heard right.  Now is that special time of the year to pretend to your friends that you actually follow college basketball, or know what the f*** a "Gonzaga" is.

As we wait I want to go ahead and see who all is interested in participating in a "March Madness" pool.  For those of you that don't know (I'm sure there are some), it is a single elimination matchup between 64 teams for the national championship in college basketball (NCAA).  If you live in the US, I'm sure you will know what this is... and if you live in the US, I'm sure you are well aware that watching 2-5 games going on at once while at you're at your local bar can be exhausting and boring after a little while...

but not when you got THE MADNESS.

I'm open to ideas, but this is my opinion of how we should run things if we garner some interest. 1) Buy in is 1-2 xmr. I vote 2 xmr. 2) We use ESPN to have a pool set up and have our charts on there to keep track of each game.  3) We use escrow (?) ... I'm fine with going off the honor system, but I can totally understand if people are kind of sketched out being that most people don't know each other or probably don't know me.  If people are interested in getting a trustworthy person, then we can get them to hold the funds.

More ideas to make this better will be well received.  Please post in this thread if you will like to participate and state how much you are willing to put in the pot (1-2 xmr).  I will put your name below:

List of Monebros gone MAD:

1) phishead (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=547991) (floam412)   ---> 2 xmr  PAID

2 ) jwinterm (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=223368)     ---> 2 xmr   PAID

3 ) mambamanagement (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=366195) ---> 2 xmr

4 ) Febo (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=335459)    ---> 2 xmr  PAID

5 ) LennyCarl (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=777934)     ---> 2 xmr   PAID

6) eyejay_2 (on IRC)     ---> 2 xmr

7 ) DrHiggins (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=378129)     ---> 2 xmr     PAID

8 ) cryptoholder1 (reddit) (https://www.reddit.com/user/cryptohodler1)     ---> 2 xmr   PAID

9 ) favorite-and-forget (reddit) (https://www.reddit.com/user/favorite-and-forget)     ---> 2 xmr    PAID

...

Current jackpot is: 14 XMR (18 XMR pending)

1) Escrow? If so, who?

Yes. Jwinterm.

2) 2 xmr buy in?

Yes, for now...

Here's how to play:

Send 2 xmr to the following public address.

Once, you have sent 2 XMR to the "Monero Madness" wallet, post your transaction hash here and I will update you to the list as well as send you a PM with your personal link to the pool website where you can make your picks.

This is a WINNER TAKE ALL event.  Whoever wins the most "points" at the end of the tournament wins.  It works like this:

Round of 64 = 1 point per game
Round of 32 = 2 points per game
Sweet Sixteen = 4 points per game
Elite Eight = 8 points per game
Final Four = 16 points per game
Championship = 32 points

Thanks everyone good luck!

Ok, sounds good... I will update the OP and post in the thread as well to give you the link to the pool.  Picks should start March 12th though since that is when all the teams will be picked to be able to play.  March 16th starts the first round, so you have about 4 days when the time comes around to get everything set.

That's innovative and sounds like fun, guess I will need some XMR, is it still profitable mining Monero?

Well, I don't really mine Monero because I don't have 1) free electricity or 2) a super powerful CPU ... but if you have a AES-NI compatible system, then it's not like it will be "worthless" if you mine in a pool.

And yeah, I figured there might be some people who are interested in playing but don't have or want to run and locally run a node/wallet to store Monero for this.  I feel the best way to go about this will be to shapeshift (I'm assuming) some BTC --> XMR and send it to either an escrow, if we decide to escrow for all of the funds, or just wait until the end of the tournament and send it directly to the winner via shapeshift.

Either that or you could use a web wallet (mymonero.com) to hold your 2 xmr for the mean time... then again, I completely understand not wanting to and just shapeshift it later... totally up to you though and how you want to do it.

Shall I pencil you in?

Update:

In order to make sure no one potentially feels the need to opt out of paying whoever the lucky winner may be, I feel the best option will be to make this a pay to play event.  So here's what we will do:

Jwinterm has created a pool wallet for us to send our bets too.  If none of you guys are familiar Jwinterm either here on this forum or on IRC, I can personally attest to him being a stand up guy who will not bamboozle any of us out of our hard earned monerojes.  He has given me a public address to send too and a private view key to go along with it.  If you wish to participate, you need to post here saying that you have paid, and also need to provide your transaction hash to go along with it.

Public Address:

Oh yeah, I'm sorry I guess I forgot to clarify in the OP... but yeah, this will be a "winner take all" kind of event.  Usually with brackets, there is usually a point system you go off of based on each round.  So for example:

Round of 64 = 1 point per game
Round of 32 = 2 points per game
Sweet Sixteen = 4 points per game
Elite Eight = 8 points per game
Final Four = 16 points per game
Championship = 32 points

Kind of like that... and whoever wins the most points, wins the pot.

I will mark you down as paid in the OP.  Just make sure to check back with me around March 12th or so, so I can give you the link and password to join the pool and then you can make your picks.  Good luck!

Alright everyone!

Brackets are out, that means it's that time to fire up those nodes and break out those wallets.  As of right now, it's just Febo and me that are paid up.  Jwinterm contacted me on IRC to let me know he will be paying soon (syncing issues with his blockchain), but as for everyone else I haven't heard anything, and will be contacting people soon™.

I have already created the group on ESPN.com, so once you pay I will send you think link with the password to enter.

This game looks exciting, I want to know that how can I participate in this?
I mean, I am not too much aware of NCAA, and what this concept is all about, so can you please clear me up a few things?
And is this an XMR only participation or we can participate through bitcoins too?

It is XMR only for now. If I can't get syncing issues sorted by tonight I might pass escrow duties off to phishead - he is a very trustworthy shitcointalker and I totally vouch for him.

First, send your 2 XMR to the address above and report back here by posting your txid.

Then you will get an invite and password to the ESPN March Madness NCAA basketball tournament. Here you will predict and enter the winner of every game all the way through the championship. Each successive round assigns more points for the correctly predicted winners. When the tournament is over, the person who accumulated the most points wins ALL of the moneros.

You can play it "safe" and always pick the higher ranked team but there are always upsets. So if you can luckily predict the upsets, you will have the best chance of winning the most points.

You send 2 XMR to:

Public Address:
43AdCGvbC2fJZLaYh7GUqvXHCKjfJfqEW8vaGSDCsv3NJBZDg4o7j2yCTWh9gV7bvQgsJBYgWT8SxfX izXVpzFeeTHEasx9

Then, you can verify your transaction here (http://xmr.llcoins.net/checktx.html) by using 1) the public address above 2) your transaction hash id 3) the private view key (which is below)

Private View Key:
276c3aa01d0313c571943058579893f31fea5730b6cb936a0ea6f250a4793304

When you have sent it, you can just post your transaction hash here on this thread and I will pm you a personal invite link to the group.  Then you can set up your brackets!

I mean, I am not too much aware of NCAA, and what this concept is all about, so can you please clear me up a few things?

If you have specific questions, absolutely.  But the general idea of "March Madness" is that it is a tournament of 64 college basketball teams which play in a single elimination tournament, and the winner at the end will win the National Championship.

As for "Monero Madness", you will predict the teams you think will win for each game.  There are six rounds, so:

1st round = 1 point
2nd round = 2 points
3rd round (sweet sixteen) = 4 points
4th round (elite eight) = 8 points
5th round (final four) = 16 points
6th round (championship) = 32 points

Whoever earns the most points for the whole tournament wins.

And is this an XMR only participation or we can participate through bitcoins too?

Yeah, for simplicity sake, we are just using XMR for buy-ins... You can use shapeshift.io if you'd like to convert bitcoins to XMR, and pay that way rather quickly.  Just make sure to get the transaction hash when it is processed.

But hey, look at the bright side!  Big Brother won't know if you had a shitty bracket this year and didn't win anything!  :P

I don't choose the winner... this is all of us gambling on "March Madness" which is a collegiate/NCAA Basketball National Championship Tournament.

So we are at 12 xmr, or $228.48 as I type now... That's a pretty nice little pay day! Almost a whopping 2.30 DASH!!!  :o :o :o

Edit:

We have another reddit member join up.

Which puts us at a total of 14 xmr total!  I'm off to bed and will be at work most of the day... so if I miss anyone tomorrow before the deadline I'm really sorry, but I will try to check here and on reddit for any more stragglers

Yeah no kidding, you are #3 in the projected/possible points category...

I think whoever has their team win the national championship pretty much wins Monero Madness. ... good news for you is that you are the only person who has Kansas picked, and they are playing pretty f'in good right now.

I think I'm not dead if Kentucky and Louisville lose before final four and UCLA makes it into championship game...maybe.

Louisville already lost which also helps me! In fact we have similar brackets it looks like.

Probably only way one of us can win is if UCLA beats Kentucky next and THEN beats Kansas. Then we'd at least have a team in the championship while knocking off 2 champion picks (!). Friday night UCLA-Kentucky is HUGE game. But if Arizona continues to do well under this scenario, floam fourtwelve could win...

And the winner is...

Dr Higgins (aka "Fag Henderson")!!!

Please either post here or just pm jwinterm with the address you want your winnings to go too. Too bad everyone else's brackets sucks so hard that we can't have it be decided by the championship game, but whatevs...  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

All in all though, watching the games with some monerojes on the line has been quite enjoyable for me and hope everyone here has had an entertaining time as well. I will try to do something like this for every "major sporting event" like the super bowl or march madness... if anyone would like to do something like this for something else just let me or jwinterm know.

I had fun, and I mean this in the most sincere way...

Congratulations Faggot.

Yes, congratulations to the Fag!

I enjoyed wagering on this and actually watched one of the games for the first time in like 10+ years (UCLA-Kentucky). But damn, is it frustrating to watch these kids play! They just aren't that good! LOL. Jacking up desperate threes from 10 feet behind the line, rushing shots, etc. I mean, I know they aren't pros and I did watch ALOT of college basketball back in the day (go Longhorns), but I think I'm just fine with not being such a big sports fan, anymore. haha whatevs ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

They are 19-22 years old. So should be allready quite developed.

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luka_Don%C4%8Di%C4%87

He was just 18 years old, and latter this year should go to college, but since he is best 17 years old basketball player ever will most likely be pick.1 on next draft.

Funny with him is that he is tall and strong for a forward but want to be play maker and similar as Kevin Durant hiding his real height and want to look smaller. Not to mention that normal 18 years old players dont have such strength nor maturity.

I dumped all my alts for LTC. For some reason the hashrate for segwit is about to go over 70%.... we are going to see a lot of price action, the segwit activation is far from price in, dont wanna miss that.

Can someone send me an address for the winner I should pay out to? And if they should get 14 or 16 XMR? Floam? Fag Henderson? Bueller?

7 folks in the NCAA bracket challenge so 14 XMR to me.  Wallet address is:

433XT8hcut3gQR6kw5pPpSXivmw1m3PqA2nLHGLBX5RzbSynrRUZizPN5EW2kDDZAafZrQTsYZutxTF GQAryiiCgFgQhi71

Maybe next year XMR will be $50 and we all put in .5 or 1 XMR.  Its been a few years since I won a bracket.  We only had 7 in the group this year, had there been more I probably would not be collecting these funds as my predictions were all busted up from first round forward.

i bet that there are many people that wants XMR will be increase more than $50 including me. i think for know, monero price is still cheap than few month ago and if we bought for now, i think we only should wait for increasing price.

Yep, congrats! ... fun fact: last year's super bowl I lost $50 to jwinterm... that was 100 xmr. So if we keep that current trajectory we will be putting in .05-.1 xmr buy ins.
