Title: Is there an altcoin that can still be mined with a home PC?
Post by: PurpleDog on March 04, 2017, 07:59:10 AM
Is there an altcoin that can still be mined with a home pc and give something back?

I would like to try mining just to see the process so that I can understand it better.

With the cpu : xmr (use claymore miner or xmr-stack)
With gpu (not too old : less than 4 years) it will depends on you gpu.
A good start for gpu mining is nvidia pascal or maxwell ( GTX 10xx or GTX 9xx, pascal is better in general), or amd RX480 or fury. Old amd cards like R9 390 or 290 and even 280X or hd7970 are good too but more heavy on the power usage. Gpu mining concern usually XMR, ETH, ZEC (claymore miner for amd, others for nvidia).

To begin you main mine at nicehash pool (you may even use nicehash miner) to gain directly btc.

If you're using Windows 10 and you want to mine ETH, don't get an Nvida card. The Windows 10 drivers don't work well with any of the mining software.

I think it is pretty hard to  mine on CPU and make any serious amount of coins. But if you are using GPU rig, try out ZEC, XMR, ZCASH.

You can also look at Folding@Home for folding coin as well as curecoin. It is all about try to fold protein and help scientists to make discovery to cure diseases such as HIV, Cancer, Alzheimers, etc. It makes more sense to me. And I would recommend every CPU/GPU miners to spend some time folding everyday. You can also fold on your old laptop. Just google folding at home.

I dunno where you get your infos, there are dozens of nvidia miners that mine with windows 10 very effectively, what you are speaking about is before the w10 anniversary edition where the nvidia drivers where buggy, w10 anniversary had been out since august 2016, so it's very old info... I have 10x 6x1070 nvidia rigs, and all is running perfectly on windows 10.

If all you want to do is learn why even worry about profit at this point?

What difference if your pc is on while your learning programing, running a screen-saver, playing a game or learning about mining............its costing you anyway in electricity.

Learning something that can eventually earn you an income even if it costs you in the beginning is worth it because you are investing in the knowledge that you gain.

Just like college, it cost up front but after its over you go out and earn based on what you have learned.

Get you a cheap video card if you already do not have one and dive in.

XMR or pascal coin can still be mined with a PC and there are a few others but if i was you buy a few cheap Video cards and mine ZEC or ETH you can mine ZEC or ETH On a PC but might not get any thing worth while from Mining without using a Video card/s ..I use windows 10 with out any issue in fact, i have found my cards run better in a windows box then a Linux box but that's a debate thing plus i like windows more so I'll admit im being  bias but if i was really honest i would say one works as good as the other it's what you like more then any thing, i use a modded watered down version of windows 10 pro exactly like the windows_10_enterprise_2016_ltsb version  but mine is legal and Activates with my Windows 10 pro key without all the BS 10 PRO comes with ..

There are many alt coin programs which you can search over google easily but i do not believe in alternate coins other than the successfull and acceptable (Bitcoin).

Personally, I think that in the future other cryptocoins will have success, too. ETH is a likely candidate.

But anyway.

Thanks for all the useful input, everyone.

I'd like to try and mine some ETH.

Do you think a "MSI NVIDIA GeForce 8400 256MB GDDR2" is too old to be any good?

In my opinion its not worth it just get a new card for mining.
