You can contact the mining pool and plead your case.

Unfortunately, that's about all you can do.  Good luck.

Please explain how you made this mistake so that others can learn from it.

Your transaction was included in block 456363 by AntPool (https://antpool.com/). Contact them and plead your case they might take pity on you and give you the fee back. Be nice as they are under no obligation to do so.

I would like clients to warn about fees that are both abnormally small (meaning likely to take more than an hour to confirm) or abnormally large (meaning a typo, such as this one). I think some might, but I don't think the Qt client most people use does.

Too bad for you pal, we can't help on it. And the only way to help with your case is already given, just contact them anyway that's the only way.

It's not all about pity, they should make their part on this type of unusual fee that has been made. Well let's hope that they will cooperate with Op and will return it out as soon as possible.

QT has a maximum allowed fee.

-maxtxfee=<amt>
Maximum total fees (in BTC) to use in a single wallet transaction or raw transaction; setting this too low may abort large transactions (default: 0.10)

When you ask maybe only ask for like 90% back or something like that, offer for them to keep a little chunk for their time and trouble..

Software really should give a warning for what are obviously excessive fees.

I wish the best to the OP and hope he can get some of his fee refunded by nicely asking AntPool.

Antpool mined the block with your fee in it.

You could try sending a pm to BITMAIN (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=156878) who started antpool's thread here, or asking what to do in the antpool thread.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=855548.0

You might also consider starting a thread about it in antpool's forum.

https://enforum.bitmain.com/

If you registered on antpool's site you could send it a ticket here.

http://support.bitmain.com/

What wallet were you using? The whole community should avoid that wallet like the plague.

Most wallets would at least warn you before paying a sky high fee, the same as they would warn you about a low fee.

If it is permitted, it is allowed. One's ethics should never be put to question.

I sent a pm to BITMAIN (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=156878) on the OPs behalf informing him of the situation. Hopefully he'll get back to the OP and come to some arrangement. BITMAIN hasn't logged in since the 7th and might be unaware of the OPs mistake.

Bitmain is awesome!

I opened a ticket with Bitmain last night.  Even though the funds were dispersed already, they plan to pay OPs losses!  This is a company operating with honesty, integrity and a strong moral compass.  Bitmain - my new favourite Bitcoin company.

Dear Customer,

We are sorry to hear this and sincerely appreciate your warmhearted.

First of all, this mistake caused by himself, and we don't have responsibility for this. And since now, Antpool has taken PPS+ and PPLNS+ payment method, so his 2.5 bitcoin transaction fee has already paid out to all the miners in Antpool. But thanks for all of your supports and unconditional trust for Antpool and Bitmain, our company has decided to pay his loss.

Looking forward to continuing to build your trust and bringing you more added values through our advanced technology and passion.

Best Wishes,
Hugh

Super generous. They actually paid it out of pocket! I'm wanting to know what wallet you're using too OP. Any wallet should have sort of warning if the fee seems crazy high.

Wow. A bitcoin company that functions on morals instead of greed. Even more trust than before can be put into hashnest, bitmain and antpool.

Please explain how you made this mistake so that others can learn from it.

It was probably a unit mistake. Such that OP thought it would have been hoped to be set for 2.5mBTC instead of 2.5BTC. Probably changing the settings of how the client functions and a fixed fee not being changed automatically.

This is just a happy coincident or what now really? that a newbie sends out a transaction with such a high fee and with the miracle timing the all moral and honest antpool mining the block with that TX and even pays from pocket just to come out of all this as a hero.

It is impossible to modify a transaction after it has been broadcast to the network.

Wow.  You're pretty cynical about this but let me assure you that this event doesn't qualify as coincidence since all of the conditions certainly have a causal connection.  If you mean the event was contrived, that's another thing entirely but you can rest assured it was not.

Ok first of all I am not associated with antpool or bitmain, for anyone who doesnt believe me pls inspect all my posts ;)

I doubt this whole action was done by antpool or bitmain because IF they would want to do something like this, they would:
1) Use a better account, not a newbie
2) Made the account respond in public with "oh my you are my lord and savior antpoolguys", if someone gifts you 2,5k$ back you say thank you, I assume our Original poster responded in private.

It is surely nice to see that Bitmain cared enough to pay OP from their pocket.
Seriously, I thought that he had lost his bitcoin but it was such a relief to see his bitcoin returned.

and for people saying that this was "put together", just look at the circumstances, it doesn't look like so.

Bitmaintech have reimbursed op from their own pocket this time, but I am sure they will not follow the same practice again and again, and it varies from case to case.

This is very generous on BITMAINs behalf considering they have no liability to repay. Great result and even more trust for them. Its nice to see around here actually.

Maybe next to scam accusations we should have an "Acts of Kindness" board just to remind everyone what Bitcoin is really about :)
