Title: The real impact of the Vault 7 CIA data leak
Post by: Kemarit on March 09, 2017, 01:54:40 PM
The leak of almost 9,000 documents detailing hacking and surveillance techniques used by the CIA is shocking, but not for the reasons many people think. Reading that your Smart TV or mobile phone could be monitoring what you say in your own house is alarming, but the real issue isn’t that the CIA spies on people. It’s not even that they do it through the devices in our homes.

The ease with which the code can be accessed and manipulated has created the real issue – that the source code, and the hacking tools used to access it is now available to anyone who wishes to use it. Criminals, hackers, terrorists, they all now have access to the hacking power wielded by the world’s most powerful intelligence agency.

They should've think of that before making these tools In the first place and using them to spy on innocent people. I haven't seen the source codes of these tools but If they are easy to compile and use, then we should expect chaos to happen.

There may be a possibility to change the codes. I hope so. Until these actions have led American intelligence agencies it did not bother me, but when the codes can be from anyone such as Russia I'm not happy, although I have nothing to fear.

Who said they were using these tools on innocent people? These tools seem to be clearly designed for use against foreign actors. The Patriot Act is still quite alive here, the FBI or appropriate agency will simply detain you and search your shit, most likely not giving it back when they are done. We live in a police state damn near already. They don't need to be coy.

There is absolutely no need to use these tools against citizens, and  if they were used, they would still require a warrant. The uproar about this is much ado about nothing, and should be directed at the fact that we, the United States of America, has just lost its entire technological advantage against the world.

Because it would be naive to think that every other major state actor doesn't have the same, or worse. We aren't even the best and brightest at cybersecurity. But now, we are certainly last. And the terrorist now know how to avoid being caught. It's organized into a wiki for them.

And as a side note, because I'm tired of hearing misinformation, the Weeping Angel exploit requires physical access to the device. So unless a shady looking cable repairman has came to your crib, with a van with satellite dishes, you probably are safe.

And, the government doesn't want to watch you watching Modern Family in your underwear.

Releasing the "tools" gives devs a chance to close the vulnerabilities, otherwise they would stay open forever.

Apparently much more to come, will be interesting.  ;D

But are these documents available for all to see? :-[
If so who will host these files?
They will have to have a host that won't be intimidated by U.S officials shutting them down.

You know Snowden was hiding out in Hong Kong don't you. Well I am sure he is in those files from the CIA break down of confidential information. ;)
