Title: Bitcoin 3D renders - Free to use as wallpaper, for promotion, or commercially
Post by: cybrbeast on April 21, 2013, 11:43:01 AM
I'm moving over to the bitco.in forum and will not be updating this thread anymore. I wonder if this will make theymos ban me here...

https://bitco.in/forum/threads/bitcoin-artwork-free-for-all-use.82/

---------------------------------------------

I showed off some Bitcoin related CGI work in the past and it was well received. I've been working on some more designs and like to share them with you. Everything was made in Blender, which is free and open source. First the old designs for those who haven't seen them yet:

http://i7.minus.com/iGBe8xMNwqvmS.png

Here (http://cybrbeast.minus.com/l88fZA0DQKkVC) is the first work I posted and it got a positive response. After this I made some more close-up shots of the coins finally resulting in this massive 3840x2160 (http://cybrbeast.minus.com/lbpEC7URbV8wwY) image.

Some details on the features of the coin designs; the 1 coin has a p2p network on the front side and the binary on the rim spells "Bitcoin". The 5 coin has a "block-chain" on the front side and "Vires in Numeris" on the rim. You can explore the models in 3D here: http://skfb.ly/5lji32dca

One of the most frequent critiques I got was that Bitcoins aren't really a physical thing so it should look more digital. I understand that and took that to heart so the first thing I made after that was a coin-wireframe integration. Here (http://cybrbeast.minus.com/le6eXkpViwcrn) and here (http://cybrbeast.minus.com/l6I1qLF9rEyeK).

https://i.imgur.com/01BIjLq.png (http://i2.minus.com/iNSwlK2WePtAX.png)

Here is a fully digital Bitcoin (http://cybrbeast.minus.com/lQZPUVLli2L87), still a bit of a work in progress though.

https://i.imgur.com/VPvfN5P.png (http://i6.minus.com/injLXQL7PlBgP.jpg)

A tron inspired scene.

http://i4.minus.com/iooB3ugxjHJF0.png (http://i3.minus.com/i8tqedrYwKGRj.png)

My most recent work was trying to visualize the magnitude of 100,000,000 Satoshi=1 BTC (Click to enlarge!)

https://i.imgur.com/mLBRzGb.png (http://i5.minus.com/im6nDCqnWrHcg.png)

Here (http://cybrbeast.minus.com/mbc5sy1T0j5v1D) is the complete album with of all renders so far in high resolution.

I've also made some animation experiments with falling Bitcoins (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d99dLbM4eGY), and the digital bitcoin glowing and rotating (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cS5YHje9O4) (need to watch in HD to really see it). These are just tests though, as with my current rig rendering full high quality animations isn't really feasible.

Finally I made some Litcoins and Bitcoins (http://cybrbeast.minus.com/mXKpUhfIL2FYo) on commission, which my client allowed me to share.

All the work above has a CC0 license (https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/), so free for all use even without credits, though tips are very much appreciated of course. So if anyone is feeling generous or wants to use them and give me something even though they are free, you are very welcome to do so at: 1BmSFrbDDYT46W6aLpRNk72yA57RvkJgDP or http://cybrbeast.tip.me

Some of my work has shown up in some articles and sites (http://cybrbeast.minus.com/mbey96foSNQNF6) already. My wallpapers are also available at CoinDL on a 'Pay What You Want' pricing if you want to support my work: https://www.coindl.com/page/author/604

I've also made the 3D models of the coins available for those who know how to use them. I use blender. For people without Blender I've also exported Collada and OBJ files. They are available at CoinDL on a 'Pay What You Want' pricing, i.e. free if you don't want to pay.
https://www.coindl.com/page/item/1052 (Here is a direct download link (https://mega.co.nz/#!5ARVAbAL!7IkdwogcgmA4TyqRjSd7K98cAFuXWqS2CatttZJQeMs))

Isokivi who runs btctrinkets (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=153618.0) also used my design to make physical coins stamped out of metal (no Bitcoin value, just nice objects), I've got a pair and I think they turned out great, nice and big and heavy.

https://i.imgur.com/UVQPvQr.jpg

I hope you guys enjoy the work.

I also made my avatar, and one for cypherdoc (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=8389) (these are obviously not free to use for everyone). Here is a Bitcoin/Litecoin spinner (http://i.minus.com/io1kmM16cfKe2.gif).

You can get prints here (https://www.openprints.com/cybrbeast/) (can pay in Bitcoin).

These are incredible.  I had to do a double take, I can't believe those are just renders.  They must represent a heck of a lot of work.
Fantastic Job!

Thanks Nova. They took quite some work, but probably less than you expect. The hard surface modelling is something I've been learning and the tools Blender offers to aid it are quite good. Once you got the models, materials, and lighting nicely set up, it's really the power of the Cycles render engine that makes it look realistic. Many people with CGI skills would point out that they are not very realistic as they are missing grime and scratches real coins would have, they are too perfect. To do a good job at that requires advanced texturing skills which I'm not really that proficient in, and besides I actually like them to look perfect :)

I just discovered Sketchfab, this allows you to upload 3D models so others can see them interactively. Here they are: http://skfb.ly/5lji32dca

Great work.

I love the digital coins. More appropriate than the gold coin lookalikes.

Edit: coins that look like they came out of a Tron movie might be cool too

Tron coins, seems like a good challenge.

Yes, this is a particularly cool version:

I made an avatar for Bitcointalk user cypherdoc (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=8389)

http://i.minus.com/i3pCb5n1vnXTf.gif

It's too bad I couldn't fix the rough edges around the coin for him. But this is a limitation of the GIF format, you only have transparent or non-transparent pixels, there is no gradient possible.

And I also made an avatar for myself as you can see  ;D

Next I'll go work on a Tron coin when I have the time, unless someone else has a request.

I just looked around online to see if my freely available renders have been used lately. The three most recent articles featuring some of my work:

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/first-bitcoin-atms-start-popping-152610705.html

http://juliansarokin.com/banks-bitcoin-the-future-of-payments/

http://olhardigital.uol.com.br/pro/noticia/38642/38642  (Portuguese article)

Nice to see people making use of them. I should get back to making some new ones again, work stress is keeping my creativity down though.

I used Blender and the included Cycles render engine, it's free and open source. Quite a learning curve, but there are lots of good (video) tutorials.

What license are they under?
Anything creative commons perhaps?

Free for personal and commercial use?

Edit: I see you've already answerred this, sorry :(  (Attribution Creative Commons license)

For people who want to know what this means:

You are free to:

Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format
Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material
            for any purpose, even commercially.

The licensor cannot revoke these freedoms as long as you follow the license terms.

Under following terms:

Attribution — You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use.

Actually I don't require attribution, but I couldn't find a license for that. Do you know what that would be, so free for all use, personal and commercial, free to edit, no attribution required.

You could pretty much just say "Free for Commercial and Personal Use".
The MIT License may be worth a look though.

I don't suppose you could use United States denominated money (like quarters, nickels, dimes, even a $100 dollar bill) and have those transition into your digital representations of bitcoin, aka the wireframe, etc?  I think that would be pretty cool. :-)

Here is my newest render (click to enlarge 1440p), here you can download a lossless PNG (https://mega.co.nz/#!lN4XXCoB!pKqvF4ghZIzfAXiyZGI284sl8so2C2HBStZvLpE8TEI) without compression. Many times people commented on my previous work that they weren't fans of coin shaped Bitcoin pictures, since Bitcoin of course doesn't exist in coin form. So here is my first Bitcoin image where there is nothing that looks like a coin. I'm not completely satisfied with this one, but I couldn't really figure out how to make it better. If anyone has ideas let me know.

If there is anyone who wants a super high quality, or super large print of the Tron inspired scene (http://i3.minus.com/i8tqedrYwKGRj.png), here is a link to an enormous version (https://mega.co.nz/#!QIxDiJzB!WkcLxkGLpoAYeXdDyaGqA7Iv2ZVNXc7bDTrboMLc96E) (196MB, 18,000x12,000) I rendered on request and was allowed to share. I hope someone prints out an extremely large version some day :)

These are beautiful from all aspects of a 3d design. I've been doing some of my own (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=882284.0) but my skills are extremely limited (especially in modeling the meshes).

Here is a fully digital Bitcoin (http://cybrbeast.minus.com/lQZPUVLli2L87), still a bit of a work in progress though.

A tron inspired scene.

My most recent work was trying to visualize the magnitude of 100,000,000 Satoshi=1 BTC (Click to enlarge!)

Isokivi who runs btctrinkets (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=153618.0) also used my design to make physical coins stamped out of metal (no Bitcoin value, just nice objects), I've got a pair and I think they turned out great, nice and big and heavy.

SWEEEET!

This will be my last update, I'm moving over to the bitco.in forum.

I wonder if this will make theymos ban me here...

There is another new forum next to the brandnew forum.bitcoin.com one? Guess I'll have to make an account on there as well. Anyway, another nice render, as always!

Didn't know there was another new one too. Now I don't know where to go, I'll see where it settles.
