Title: Internet connection requirements for 20 rigs
Post by: armazingerz on March 13, 2017, 04:50:53 PM
Hi,

we are going to set up 20 rigs for mining altcoins such xmr, eth and zec and we would like to know if it would full function under a single optical fiber 300/300 Mbps line or if we will need a bigger bandwidth or more lines with some sort of load balancer or what.

Thanx a lot! Regards

that should be enough for 500+ rigs easy... mining doesn't take up much. More lines is a good idea to be sure you're never without internet.

I don't know, I had some connection issues at home (my connection is way worse, like 20/2Mbps adsl) with 2 rigs, I guess they collapsed the upload so I don't want to suffer the same problem with 20 rigs, or at least I want to know how much would be my internet connection expenses. Also, I don't know if this mining programs establish a lot of connections like a p2p program, because that behaviour kills connections easily, not like a bandwith problem, in the case of multiple p2p programs I think is more about the router being unable of attending hundreds or thousands of connections.

I have three rigs mining on a 20/2 Mbit ADSL connection. They're not making any difference to the connection at all. Perhaps you had a shitty router or something else was wrong. One thing is for sure though, the mining wasn't the reason.

20/2Mbit no problem for 20rigs. Only some very cheap routers sometimes had problems with 16 and more clients.

300 mbit line is wayyyyy overkill.

Mining uses hardly any data, latency is much more important.

Just get a 10-mbit line and save money.  Also use a pool and that will solve any mass p2p connections issue.

Simplify simplify

Someone has measured the monthly data usage of a rig?

For example a 6GPU rig mining ETH on ethermine using claymore.
I would like to create a secondary internet connection and I do not know which data plan I have to book.

Mining rigs data usage is  like sending an email so small it's pointless to count

I got 8 rigs on my 10/1 DSL so 300/300 is way overkill.

Thank you all mates!

As others have said, internet bandwidth is the least concern when setting up a bitcoin mine.  Barely any bandwidth is used.  The more major points you will need to focus on is power distribution and cooling, cause that is going to get hot quick.

Bandwidth is a smaller problem than network congestion if you don't get a decent router. For 20 rigs I recommend a used Cisco Catalyst gigabit router. You can snag them on eBay for like $200 and it will keep your latency down.

I know people that run 3000+ GPU miners on a 100/100 Mbit line.

Yeah no wonder, i even wanted to put 1000+ rigs at start ahah, really bandwith isn't an issue, but latency (optical fiber very good for that) and redundancy for mining uptime are good, better take 3x100MB lines that 1x300MB line :)

As everyone else pointed out that is plenty of bandwidth even for hundreds of rigs.

You may be better served by trying to acquire a second link from another vendor if at all possible. I would rather have two 100/100 links from two different ISP to provide some level of redundancy in case one would go down. Of course even this is usually minimal of your ISP is even the slightest bit reliable.

For most people running out of electrical capacity is the far greater concern than bandwidth, with the possible exception of people in remote areas still on dial-up plans.

Used server gear with pfsense would be a better deal plus it double as a proxy server

300/300 fiber is way overkill in your case :)

There is the bandwidth and data usage for one of my 7GPU rig , hashing a little bit more than 8 days

that bandwidth spike's you see on the graph is when i loggen in with teamviewer  ;D

If the connection is only for mining than that is overkill. But for modern internet in a full household with Netflix, 4k Youtube, gaming etc it will be a good investment  ;D
